FPS Football paved the way for career mode football games. Many people believe that the advent of the FPS franchise forced the Madden series to move toward career mode that many of us use.
This game first came out in 1992, and didn't have license to use NFL players. Rather, it came packaged with a league of fictional players. Many of them are still in my Toronto Grudlies "universe" as coaches, commentators or icons.
Subsequent releases of the game included NFL teams, as well as the fictional team set. The 95 edition of the game, which still played in DOS, is thought by many to be the best version. In 97 and 98 the game went to a Windows-based interface, but many people reported too many bugs and not enough updates. The software engine was aging at that point and in need of an overhaul.....the authors attempted to do this with a 99 version of the game, but it was rushed to the shelves and released in an unplayable state. This was the last edition of the game. Unfortunately, the franchise had a history of being released with many bugs, often requiring several patches.
In surfing the net and Googling the FPS series for nostalgic purposes, I found that there are still leagues which play this game online. One of these recently celebrated its 200th season!
I bought the first edition of this game the day I bought my first PC (a 386-40 which was among the fastest on the market at that time.) A few years later, I bought FPS Football Pro 95 and played that one for years, on a Pentium 75. Tried FPS Football Pro 98 eventually (I had heard that the 96 and 97 versions weren't really worth upgrading to) and played a few seasons, before going to Madden.
A great franchise

Hey! I am a newbie here on Football Idiot....I found your post about your team, The Toronto Grudlies. They sound as formidable as my Los Angeles Thunderbirds. As GM, I have guided my team 6 Super Bowls (winning 3), 6 AFC Championships and 9 Division championships.
I have peppered my North American Football League with teams in Toronto (Toronto Sabres), Montreal (Montreal Monarchs) and in Mexico City (Mexico City Aztecs).
I also recreated a bunch of old NFL stars from other eras and plopped 'em into a modern setting....Dick "Night Train" Lane, Joe Namath, Red Grange, Roger Staubach....I even threw in some other athletes and sports figures as grid-iron warriors....Jeff Gordon (The 4 Time NASCAR Champ) is quarterback of The Sacramento Kings. Dirk Nowitski (Dallas Mavericks) is quarterback of The Dallas Mustangs....I recreated the Cincinnati Bengals offensive line from the 1980's and shipped 'em all to Los Angeles.....to my Thunderbirds.
Matt Leinart is a Pro-Bowler as quarterback of The Los Angeles Sharks......
Fun, fun fun....I enjoyed reading your journal! Peace! Eli

I got hold of the Dynamix 28-team roster from the 95 version of FPS, and am considering importing these players into Madden 08. I'd add in a few custom teams, including my Toronto Grudlies, and maybe do an expansion draft. Sort of like doing a "reboot" of my franchise.... although I am enjoying the franchise in its current stage as well....

Interesting breakdown of the player ratings for FPS. They just have 8 ratings while we have many more with Madden... I may be looking at ways to convert these via code.

Yeah, this was revolutionary for its time though! Eight rating categories...was unheard of at the time. Previously, the best home computer football games were 4th and Inches by Accolade, and the Gamestar football in the 80's (4 players per side). Usually the player would have one attribute...he'd be either speedy, strong or somewhere in between.
I do remember that all throughout the Sierra/Dynamix/Front Page Sports franchise, the games would be buggy and you'd always have to find a patch. Once, I was trailing by 7 points and scored a TD with no time remaining. Since there was no time left, the game decided it was over and didn't allow me to try the extra point.
