Historic Yankees Tournament

Postby RevanFan » Fri Mar 26, 2021 10:44 pm

Well, I just got OOTP Baseball 22, and I had an idea I think will be brilliant. I'm going to do something similar to what I've done with my historic Cowboys teams, but... this time, it'll be simulated series with EVERY SINGLE YANKEES TEAM. That's right, every Yankees team. What's that you ask? "What about when they were the Highlanders, in the deadball era?" They'll be there too, don't you worry. Everyone from Jack Chesbro to Wally Pipp to Babe Ruth to Joe DiMaggio to Yogi Berra to Mickey Mantle to Thurman Munson to Don Mattingly to Derek Jeter to Aaron Judge. Every year from 1903 to 2020.

To make sure the lineups are accurate, I'm doing research for each team, checking box scores to figure out the correct batting order. The format will be World Series style. Seven game series, 2 home, 3 away, 2 home. The seeding will be done based primarily on playoff finish, with win percentage as a tiebreaker. The seeding is as follows:

Code: Select all

I'll post recaps and box scores, provided by the game, of each game in each series, with one series per post. The games will all be simulated. The one thing I'm still not sure about is whether or not to use the DH rule for all teams, or just the ones from 1973-present. I think I'll have it be a team-by-team basis, with the home team determining, like the actual World Series. Game strategy will be set to the modern era for all games, and the roster limit will be 26 for all teams.

I know this part of the site isn't frequented much, but I hope there's a few baseball fans here who will find this interesting. Feel free to take a chance at guessing who will win it all.

The first series in this incredibly massive tournament is the #65 seed 1985 Yankees (97-64) at the #64 seed 1933 Yankees (91-59). The top players for 1985, going by WAR, were OF Rickey Henderson, INF Don Mattingly, SP Ron Guidry, and INF Willie Randolph. For 1933, they were INF Lou Gehrig, OF Babe Ruth, OF Ben Chapman, and C Bill Dickey. The winner advances to take on #1 seed 1927.

The next series up sees #32 1960 (97-57, World Series loss) taking on #97 1911 (76-76). The best players for 1960 were OF Roger Maris, OF Mickey Mantle, INF Bill "Moose" Skowron, and INF Tony Kubek. The best players for 1911, then known as the Highlanders, were SP Russ Ford, SP Ray Caldwell, OF Birdie Cree, and OF Harry Wolter.

Another upset, and one that particularly surprised me, because before doing this journal, I did a test run and 2003 won it all.

That sounds great Revanfan, I look forward to keeping up with the journal. The Oakland A's and the Pittsburgh Pirates were always my favorite two teams in MLB! St. Louis was also a fav! I totally hated Boston, and every team out of New York :x! But I will be reading and sure I'll enjoy your journal!

Hey, it's kinda hard not to be a Yankees fan when you grow up an hour train ride from the stadium, you have a mom who used to love the Yankees in the mid to late 70s, and a dad who has loved them his whole life, and one of your earliest memories is them in the World Series. It's a very foggy memory of either the 1999 or 2000 Series, but it's there. The first World Series with them, and only one thus far, that I remember very clearly is 2009. That was a great year. I still remember watching the parade, with Jay-Z performing "Empire State of Mind" and Derek Jeter and the other players receiving "keys to the city." Good times. Wish I could have been there myself in person, but it was still cool on TV.

in the next set I'm pulling for 66 and 67, because wasn't that coming off those famous years with Joe DiMaggio? and the Mets and shiny Shea were stealing the spotlight?... (i dont know my baseball history like i should? :| )
and I'll take 74, cause i like nostalgia. And 87 for personal reasons, that was when i was in 4th grade and was first learning about sports.

DiMaggio was mostly in the 30s and 40s (and briefly in the early 50s). 66 and 67 were in the rough times for the Yankees. They still had Howard, Mantle, Maris, Ford, and Roy White, but Howard, White, and Maris were just around average on 66, and were gone or non-existent in 67, and Ford was no longer a full time starter. Mantle was great still, but had started getting hurt more often and was older, and only played in 108 games in 66, and had to move to first base in 67.

So, for Yankees (and Highlanders) history, the big stars (both national and local) played at least a starting role in the following decades:

Spoiler:
1900s: Chesbro, Elberfeld, Keeler, Orth, Chase
1910s: Chase, Cree, Caldwell, Shawkey, Peckinpaugh, Pipp
1920s: Shawkey, Peckinpaugh, Pipp, Ruth, Gehrig, Dickey, Lazzeri, Combs, Meusel
1930s: Ruth, Gehrig, Dickey, Lazzeri, Combs, Ruffing, Gomez DiMaggio, Keller

Next we have #16 1943 (98-56, World Series win) vs. #113 1966 (70-89). The top players by WAR in 1943 were SP Spud Chandler, OF Charlie Keller, INF Joe Gordon, and SP Tiny Bonham. 1966, on the other hand, was led by UT Tom Tresh, INF Clete Boyer, OF Mickey Mantle, and SP Frtiz Peterson.
