Week 8 Highlights

Image

Johnny Unitas reaches another milestone on his first pass of the day, crossing the 40,000 yard mark for his career and likely the only member of that club for a while. However, there's not much celebration at the moment as Gail Cogdill gets the ball punched out by Willie Lanier and it gets recovered by San Diego.

Despite the opening hiccup, it's actually a nice bounceback for the Colts, who defeat the San Diego Chargers 34-24 in California. Unitas throws 4 TD passes, 2 of them to Cogdill, and backup Allen Smith manages to give the Colts a ground dimension with 107 yards. Lance Alworth & Gary Garrison each record over 125 receiving yards in the loss.

By far the Game of the Week was the Seattle Seahawks coming into Cleveland in their first meeting as divisional foes. Jim Brown has mostly served as a change of pace back this season, but Seattle's coaching allowed him the start in what might be his final game in front of the Cleveland faithful. And he delivered with at least one vintage run where he trucked through Ernie Kellerman and stiff-armed Walter Beach for a 55-yard touchdown run, eliciting confused cheers from the crowd.

Image

Brown's successor as franchise back, Leroy Kelly, stepped up as well for this game, with an astounding 210 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns today, which contributed to Cleveland holding a lead for most of the 2nd half.

Image

Chip Myers could see two Browns with good angles on him so he felt compelled to dive and stretched the ball just perfectly to get credit for the game-tying touchdown for Seattle. After a go-ahead field goal by Cleveland, Tom Flores drove the team down the field and scored the game-winning touchdown on a scramble, redemption for fumbling near the goal line earlier in the game. The Seahawks narrowly defeat the Browns 38-34.

Other Week 8 Results

Buffalo Bills 48, New York Jets 7. Buffalo comes into Shea Stadium and smothers the home team, as they force Joe Namath into 4 picks before knocking him out of the game. Buffalo easily leads in time of possession as Bobby Burnett & Gerry Allen both cross the 100-yard mark on the ground, while Emerson Boozer his limited to just 23 yards. Buffalo's MacArthur Lane gets his first career rush attempt and scores a touchdown on the opportunity.

Minnesota Vikings 49, Philadelphia Eagles 34. Minnesota's defense finds their groove in the second half as they limit Philly to just 7 points while the offense rewards them with 36 2nd-half points. Paul Flatley & Bill Martin both cross the 100-yard mark in receiving, and Dave Osborn rushes for 2 touchdowns. A gruesome moment in the 3rd quarter may mar the positive vibes, as veteran linebacker Roy Winston had to be stretchered off the field, and early reports are that it was a spinal injury that may sideline him indefinitely.

Denver Broncos 23, Green Bay Packers 17 (OT). Denver's defense shuts out Green Bay in the 2nd half and John McCormick leads a comeback that culminates in a game-winning 51-yard TD pass to Randy Minniear in overtime. John Gilliam is unable to follow up his amazing 4 TD game last week as he's injured early today, and questionable to play next week.

Pittsburgh Steelers 16, San Francisco 49ers 8. Given how potent San Francisco is capable of being, this is a stellar outing for the Pittsburgh defense, even if most of it was faced against recently acquired backup Mike Livingston since John Brodie exited after just 3 passes due to a shoulder issue. But limiting reigning Super Bowl MVP Ken Willard to just 15 yards on 17 attempts is a miracle given his output this season thus far.

St. Louis Cardinals 33, Los Angeles Rams 30. The Rams have now lost 3 games in a row as St. Louis' Al Woodall continues to surprise fans, throwing for over 300 yards and 3 TDs in the LA Coliseum today.

New York Giants 22, Miami Dolphins 20. New York fends off Miami to move to 6-2 this season. Calvin Hill puts the team on his back again with 29 rushes for 131 yards and a TD.

Orlando Jaguars 41, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24. Pete Beathard throws 4 TD passes with no interceptions, and 3 of those scores go to Art Graham. Floyd Little balances out Orlando's offense with 134 rushing yards.

Chicago Bears 31, Detroit Lions 30. Gale Sayers doesn't have much yardage, but does get into the end zone 3 times for Chicago to get his team the victory. Detroit's Bill Murphy has a nice day of 7 catches for 170 yards and a TD.

Birmingham Ravens 22, Houston Oilers 13. A sloppier day for Houston's Craig Morton, who gets intercepted thrice, including one returned for a TD by Birmingham's Bobby Bryant.

Oakland Raiders 26, Tennessee Titans 13. Oakland tight end Billy Masters has been on a very hot streak as of late, having a great 8 reception, 148 yard, 1 TD game today. Tennessee had to go to the pass quickly and highly touted rookie O.J. Simpson is limited to 12 yards on just 7 rushes.

Washington Redskins 22, New England Patriots 7. Sonny Jurgensen only completes 13 passes, and 10 of them go to Richard Trapp for 140 yards, and that's enough to defeat a hapless Pats team that desperately needs a shakeup.

Awards Race at Week 8

Image

Most Valuable Player: John Brodie brought a Super Bowl to San Francisco last season, and he is following it up with a close to immaculate 1969, only throwing 1 INT against 19 touchdown passes and keeping the Niners near the top of the conference. If he were to stumble, Fran Tarkenton (NYG), Don Meredith (DAL) or Charley Johnson (TB) are candidates to step up, but nobody has separated themselves yet as a consensus fallback to Brodie.

Defensive Player of the Year: This race has been dominated by linebackers and that continues to be the case with Tommy Nobis (ATL) getting most of the early buzz here, with Sam Huff (WAS) and Al Atkinson (NYJ) also under consideration. If voters want to think about giving it to a defensive back, Fred Williamson in Kansas City is the leading option.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Right now, this is the most interesting of the player races, as it's mainly a two-way between Calvin Hill (NYG) and Al Woodall (STL). Hill was drafted to give Joe Morrison some relief and he has done so in spades, remaining near the top of the league in most rushing categories and being a key piece of New York's turnaround. Meanwhile, Woodall was pushed into action unexpectedly after a season-ending injury to Jim Hart, and he has held his own despite doom and gloom being St. Louis' modus operandi for the last couple of seasons. The Cards have not played in a postseason game since the 1940s, so if Woodall could lead them there in his first year in the NFL, he would have to get serious consideration.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: No one's jumped out at this one yet, but Fred Dryer in Baltimore seems like a fine bet, with 7 sacks so far. Joe Owens is an unheralded rookie defensive end with less impressive stats but writers seem to love him given his appearance on the mid-season All-Pro team, so he's someone to keep a closer eye on. Bill Bergey may be the anchor at middle linebacker that Detroit HC Joe Schmidt has been searching for.

Coach of the Year: There's a lot that can happen in the 2nd half of the season, but Chuck Knox (NYG), Charley Winner (STL) and Otto Graham (WAS) all have cases thus far. Knox has turned around a Giants squad that has already matched their 1968 win total. Winner, who'd been on the hot seat last offseason, has worked wonders with Al Woodall and has Cards fans believing in a postseason run finally.

Week 9 Highlights

Image

Jim Brown retreats back into his change-of-pace role after starting last week, but he comes in just when it's needed and scores a game-sealing touchdown against his former coach Paul Brown, as the Seattle Seahawks defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 31-24. Seattle all-around has a great day, with a stellar 26/31 for 413 yards by Tom Flores, 109 rushing yards by Larry Garron and two receivers crossing the 100-yard mark. One of those receivers, Lionel Taylor, finished tied exactly with Raymond Berry for the all-time receiving yard leader, so Seattle fans will celebrate his sole possession of the record next week as they host the Steelers. Interestingly, Seattle is now 3-0 against their AFC North fellows, including their Week 1 victory in Pittsburgh.

Image

One milestone that did get reached was Don Maynard joining the 10,000-yard club on this missed tackle by Rickie Harris on a wet Shea Stadium field. Maynard didn't score today but the rest of the Jets showed up as New York defeated the Washington Redskins 44-34. Backup Bruce Lemmerman, in for Joe Namath who was ruled out this week, performed admirably completing 22 of 27 passes and throwing 4 touchdowns. For Washington, tight end Jerry Smith continues to be a force with 15 catches for 155 yards in this game.

This was a close game that broke open in the 4th quarter as #44 Donny Anderson hurdled and juked the Chiefs special teams to score a go-ahead kick return touchdown for Green Bay. Don Horn, who is tasked with guiding the Chiefs in Len Dawson's absence for the rest of this season, really stepped into the MVP's shoes by driving Kansas City down the field and executing a game-tying TD pass to Nick Eddy. The Chiefs win the coin toss for overtime and Jan Stenerud boots in the game-winner for a 23-20 win over the Packers (OT). The Chiefs dominated in the trenches, with Jim Tyrer & Ed Budde combining for over 20 pancake blocks between them in this game.

Other Week 9 Results

Cleveland Browns 34, Buffalo Bills 20. These were the teams with the top records in the AFC and Cleveland emerges victorious in this potential playoff preview. The Browns jumped out to a 21-3 first quarter lead and never looked back. Jim Avery, former Washington tight end who was signed off the street 2 weeks ago after Cleveland's top 2 tight ends got injured, showed up ready to stick around as he got to 102 yards on just 3 catches, and caught a TD.

Baltimore Colts 31, Oakland Raiders 6. A disheartening home loss for the Raiders as Baltimore comes in and handily takes care of business. Daryle Lamonica can't hit anybody, completing just 12 of 42 passes and throwing 3 picks. Colts rookie Fred Dryer has another multi-sack game under his belt and is up to 9 this season.

Philadelphia Eagles 17, Dallas Cowboys 10. A defensive battle in the City of Brotherly Love that Philly survives. Veteran Timmy Brown, who's transitioned into a mentor role, started the game because of Paul Robinson's injury and provided with 50 rushing yards and a 44-yard receiving TD.

New England Patriots 17, Houston Oilers 10. Neither team scores in the second half, which seems indicative of where both of these teams are right now, as this marks the Pats' just 2nd win of the year. Haven Moses has been in a sophomore slump after that OROY campaign, but today went well with 125 receiving yards and a TD.

Pittsburgh Steelers 34, New Orleans Saints 27. Gary Ballman is the main man for Pittsburgh with 3 receiving touchdowns, and on defense safety Paul Martha contributed with an interception and a forced fumble recovered by Bob Hohn. Saints QB Bob Lee, who had been on a hot streak, got knicked up and Karl Sweetan had to step back in, and performed OK but not enough to get the win.

Los Angeles Rams 26, Atlanta Falcons 24. Claude Crabb records 2 interceptions, and Carl Garrett rushes for 106 yards as the Rams control the tempo just enough to escape Atlanta with a win.

Orlando Jaguars 31, St. Louis Cardinals 18. The Cardinals are held to 6 points through 3 quarters by the visiting Jags defense. Floyd Little keeps Orlando's offense on time with 98 rushing yards and 2 TDs.

San Diego Chargers 21, Minnesota Vikings 13. Neither Joe Kapp nor Bob Berry, who had to come in after Kapp got injured, could mount a comeback against the Chargers, and so they slip to 3-5, yet still tied for first in that division.

Detroit Lions 27, Denver Broncos 14. Denver trips up in their visit to Michigan as the Lions fight their way to remaining in the hunt for the NFC North. Rookie Bill Bergey makes his presence known with 11 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and a sack.

Tennessee Titans 16, Birmingham Ravens 6. Tennessee's Joe Taylor has 2 interceptions today.

Las Vegas Panthers 19, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 13.

Week 10 Highlights

Image

In a key moment for the AFC West, the Broncos came into Kansas City Municipal and started out strong, with Manny Hernandez's strip sack of Don Horn inside the Chiefs' 20-yard line setting the tone. That being said, Bobby Howfield was called on for 4 field goals, so the KC defense was to be thanked that the Broncos were only leading 19-0 at halftime.

Image
Image

Whatever coach Hank Stram said in the locker room worked, as it looked like the Chiefs were supercharged in the 2nd half. Broncos DB Nemiah Wilson seemed to be a target as Nick Eddy trucked through him for a TD run and then Mike Haffner beat Wilson for a 91-yard go-ahead touchdown reception. Kansas City's defense buckled down and shut out the Broncos for the half, and so the final score was Kansas City 23, Denver 19. Notably, in two starts so far replacing Len Dawson, Don Horn has two 4th-quarter comebacks, and this one potentially securing a division lead for the team.

Image

Lionel Taylor doesn't get his first reception until the 2nd quarter, but the 8-yard catch causes a pause in the game, as Seattle fans celebrated Taylor's new status as all-time receiving yard leader, passing Raymond Berry's 10887 career mark.

And it was a good omen for the Seahawks as they held on for a 44-34 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tom Flores threw 4 TD passes, including a 98-yard pass to fullback Charlie Brown, who was totally ignored in a coverage snafu by Pittsburgh. Seattle's defense also returned 2 Pittsburgh fumbles for touchdowns today. It's worth noting that Greg Landry did his best to keep the Pittsburgh offense on track with 460 passing yards, getting Danny Abramowicz & Roy Jefferson past the 150-yard mark. The Seahawks are now 4-0 against their divisional opponents so far.

Other Week 10 Results

San Diego Chargers 27, Houston Oilers 7. Charley Hennigan hit the milestone of 10,000 career receiving yards in this game, but it felt like a footnote given it happened in the first quarter and Houston got shut out for the other 3 quarters. John Hadl threw 3 TD passes and Lance Alworth hauled in 11 catches for San Diego.

Buffalo Bills 45, Miami Dolphins 24. Jack Kemp records his 200th career TD pass in this game, but that is overshadowed by a severe injury he suffered in the 4th quarter that seems like it will sideline the 1967 MVP for the remainder of the season. Kay Stephenson, who did throw a TD pass in relief here, will have to take over and hold on to Buffalo's AFC East lead. It helps that the Bills rush offense is so strong, as Bobby Burnett & Ed Podolak combined for over 250 rushing yards and 3 TDs between them.

Orlando Jaguars 23, Tennessee Titans 20. You could call these Jaguars some Cardiac Cats, as they move into 6-3 while depending on a 4th Curt Knight game-winning field goal this season. Jerry Rhome had his chance to stick it to an Orlando team that traded him away and mostly whiffed, only completing 10 passes in the loss. Floyd Little rushed for 115 yards for Orlando and scored a TD.

San Francisco 49ers 41, St. Louis Cardinals 28. John Brodie throws just his 2nd interception of the season, but fortunately it accompanies another 4 TD passes, 3 of them to Dick Witcher. On defense, Dave Wilcox takes over with 3 tackles for loss and an interception.

Oakland Raiders 26, Chicago Bears 23 (OT). Art Powell is on the decline but he's still capable of big games, as he comes through with a 151-yard, 1-TD game for his team. The even older man on Oakland, George Blanda, is responsible for 4 field goals including the overtime game-winner.

Birmingham Ravens 23, Atlanta Falcons 17. Birmingham pulls off the upset against the visiting Falcons, as Tom Woodeshick rushes for 120 yards and the Ravens defense messes with Randy Johnson who is scattered and only completes 19 of 44 pass attempts.

Las Vegas Panthers 27, Detroit Lions 19. After being shut out in the first half, Las Vegas rebounds to win the game. John David Crow rushes for 145 yards, and Marlin Briscoe looks back to his healthy self with 3 TD passes.

Los Angeles Rams 34, New Orleans Saints 14. A ho-hum day for the Rams who were facing a Bob Lee-less Saints squad in New Orleans. LA's rookie back Carl Garrett rushes for 2 scores.

Green Bay Packers 38, Minnesota Vikings 28. Minnesota scored 7 points exactly in each quarter, but that was not enough to keep pace with the home team. Herb Adderley shut down Minnesota with 7 passes defensed, including 3 interceptions and one of them returned for a touchdown.

Washington Redskins 34, Philadelphia Eagles 26. Sonny Jurgensen is efficient completing 19 of 24 passes for 320 yards and 3 TDs.

Dallas Cowboys 26, New York Giants 16. This was all on the Dallas defense, as they forced 5 turnovers including 2 interceptions by Charlie Greer.

Cincinnati Bengals 38, Cleveland Browns 13. Paul Brown gets the best of his old squad, as Dick Hoak scores 3 touchdowns against this Cleveland defense.

Week 11 Highlights

Image

If ever there was a rollercoaster game, Jaguars fans went through the whole gauntlet before ending up with a disappointing 22-19 loss in OT to the San Diego Chargers. The Jaguars were behind for pretty much the entire game until Pete Beathard drove Orlando down the field for a touchdown which set them up for a go-ahead extra point. However, the snap was botched and so the score is tied at the end of regulation.

The Chargers win the overtime coin toss and San Diego sets up Dick Van Raaphorst for a game-winning field goal from 48 yards out, but Van Raaphorst misses, injecting new life into the Tangerine Bowl crowd. However, that's deflated a couple of plays later when Floyd Little, who'd rushed for 130 yards today, puts the ball on the ground and it gets picked up by San Diego. That was Little's 2nd fumble of the day. And so Van Raaphorst gets a second chance and that time is successful in winning the game for the visiting Chargers.

John David Crow got injured on his first touch but Don Perkins & Don Shy more than picked up the slack, especially Shy who hauled in 3 receiving touchdowns including the game-winner as Las Vegas Panthers defeat the Cleveland Browns 38-37. As for Perkins, he rumbled for 172 rushing yards. In addition to Crow, Marlin Briscoe got injured early in the game, but Gary Cuozzo, a seasoned backup at this point, slid in easily throwing for 4 TDs in Briscoe's stead. Cleveland's Frank Ryan also threw 4 TD passes despite the close loss.

Jerry Smith continues his All-Pro level season as Washington's tight end, stretching out for his 2nd TD catch of the day and finishing with 13 catches for 134 yards. The Washington Redskins defeat the Dallas Cowboys 26-10. Don Meredith hits 400 passing yards in the loss, which he needed to do especially since their rushing offense finished with negative yards, including a sad 9 yards on 14 attempts by Dan Reeves.

Other Week 11 Results

Buffalo Bills 24, New England Patriots 22. It's a bumpy day for Kay Stephenson in his first start after Jack Kemp was ruled out for the season, as he threw 3 picks and completed just 9 passes. He's bailed out by a couple of big plays like a Fair Hooker 68-yard catch-and-run, and a Remi Prudhomme 15-yard fumble return TD. The Pats keep it close with a fine day from Virgil Carter, who may be ready to take the reins back from John Huarte? Carter targets Jim Nance and hits him for 10 catches.

San Francisco 49ers 33, Los Angeles Rams 28. The reigning Super Bowl champs withstand a tough challenge from their Californian brethren, as John Brodie's MVP campaign rolls on with 4 TDs and no INTs. Ed Beard has some timely plays on defense with a sack and a pass deflection on LA's final 4th down attempt. Roman Gabriel threw for 421 yards and completed passes to 10 different receivers.

Baltimore Colts 26, St. Louis Cardinals 23. After a disappointing start to the season, the Colts have fully rebounded as they win their 4th straight. Jimmy Orr & Gail Cogdill each went for over 130 receiving yards. During this streak, Lou Michaels has been asked to return to placekick after an uneven start from rookie David Ray, and Michaels goes 4/4 on field goals here.

Kansas City Chiefs 27, Houston Oilers 23. Don Horn doesn't need to lead another 4th-quarter comeback, as his 3 TD passes give KC a lead they're able to hold for this game. Otis Taylor is Horn's main target with 8 catches for 162 yards and 2 TDs. Emmitt Thomas picked off Craig Morton twice.

Philadelphia Eagles 44, Miami Dolphins 29. Norm Snead & Ben Hawkins connect for 3 touchdowns, while Paul Robinson rushes for 134 yards and a TD in this easy win. Miami's Frank Jackson & Bo Roberson also crack the 100-yard mark as the Dolphins try to keep up.

New York Giants 35, Detroit Lions 28. Calvin Hill is a wild man today, rushing for 184 yards but also fumbling three times. Two of those are recovered by Dick LeBeau and one he was able to return for a score, to pair with his 49th career interception. On New York's defense, Clarence Childs intercepts 2 passes and returns one 80 yards for a Giants TD.

Green Bay Packers 37, Birmingham Ravens 34 (OT). This was a surprisingly close one, as the Pack needed game-tying and game-winning field goals from Don Chandler to escape with the win here. Marv Fleming has 180 receiving yards and 2 TDs. Ken Stabler had a great day keeping Birmingham in contention today with 4 TD passes and no interceptions.

New York Jets 36, Seattle Seahawks 33 (OT). Another game where needing overtime to escape the win seems like a small surprise. Don Maynard & George Sauer combine for 19 catches and over 230 yards. And on defense, veteran Johnny Sample intercepted 2 passes and returned one for a TD.

Minnesota Vikings 40, Oakland Raiders 19. Billy Thompson returned the opening kickoff for a Minnesota touchdown and that set the tone from there.

Chicago Bears 34, New Orleans Saints 31. Jim Allison rushed for 2 touchdowns in this high-scoring loss.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 29, Atlanta Falcons 23.

Pittsburgh Steelers 31, Cincinnati Bengals 24.

Tennessee Titans 16, Denver Broncos 13.
