Playoffs recap

Craig Cox and Clinton Ott each scored early, and soon it was too late for the RailRiders to do anything.

Game Log Ends
------------------------------------------------------------

The blowout win against the Apocalypse crashed with a few minutes to go. So no game log, and I'm going from memory.

Craig Cox beat everyone to the endzone on this punt return.

Image

Jonathan Dorenbos caught this pinpoint pass in the endzone to increase Anchorage's advantage.

Image

Eric Wilson had two long rushing touchdowns, including this one.

Image

The Super Bowl game was held in New Orleans against the Snowcats.

Craig Cox opened the score with a 65-yard TD reception.

Image

Then Eric Wilson had this 77-yard TD run.

Image

With star QB J'Marcus Painter out with an injury, it is Ty Smelter that was victimized by Anchorage's defense: 11 sacks and 3 interceptions. Here, Deshazor White forces the fumble.
Image

Brandon Dickson catches a 48-yard TD.
Image

J.J. King stops another drive with this interception.
Image

Will Pericak was named game MVP with his 6 sacks and 1 interception.

Congratulations, Blizzard!

A few more legends

With season 85 in the books, it is time to reminisce about some all-time greats.

Jeremy McManus might be the greatest Yeti of them all, so he gets colors on his stat sheet.

Image

Charles Novak retired as the most consistent returner the team had. Now Craig Cox will be giving him a run for his money.

Image

Aaron McClain was a special player. He was not the most physically gifted, but he worked hard and made the most of his opportunities. Definitely the best TE3/FB2 the team ever had.

Image

Soma Johnson was both a ball hawk and a hard hitter.

Offseason activity

The Blizzard had another busy offseason.

They traded QB Jason Peterson and LT Kenny Fitzpatrick to the Wolves for the 1st and 7th overall picks, as well as DT Torrey Gaines.

They also acquired the 6th overall pick from the Gunmen for CB Quinton Sample.

Finally, they released CB Shaq Watt and signed the following free agents:

QB Gerald Brown
HB Jared Williams
TE Taylor Floyd
FS Matt Allen
SS Caushaud Stanford

Floyd was scouted by the team but selected by the Storm a few years ago. The others have already spent time with the team.

First depth chart

QB: 7 A.Q. Austin (83/21), 15 Adrian Washington (76/23), 9 Gerald Brown (78/30)

Austin is mobile (SPD 67) but not extremely quick. He has a good arm but will need to work on his accuracy (THP 93, THA 83)

HB: 28 Eric Wilson (80/25), 23 Jonathan Ellerbe (82/24), 21 Zac Ansah (80/21), 40 Jared Williams (82/28)

Wilson should keep the starting job.

FB: 43 Jonathan Dorenbos (99/28), 44 Daryl DiMarco (78/23), 36 Akeem Beachum (86/24)
TE: 87 John Aiken (92/26), 83 Kawann Harris (88/25), 84 Christian Armstrong (96/29), 47 Lee Mauro (84/32), 80 Jon Housler (81/30), 85 Tajae Bullard (84/23), 86 Jon Richardson (75/21), 88 Taylor Floyd (75/27)

That makes a lot of personnel, old and new. Some are aging, while some youngsters are not quite ready as blockers yet.

WR: 13 Tony Gilmore (88/26), 17 Craig Cox (93/26), 0 Clinton Ott (92/29), 39 Brandon Dickson (79/24), 10 Morgan Rodgers (78/28), 84 Jimmy Riley (73/21)

Same personnel as last year, with the addition of Jimmy Riley, who will have to be impressive to stay on the roster.

LT: 76 Scooby Thorpe (87/25)
LG: 62 Alex Hunt (80/24), 65 Adrian Rogers (78/21)
C: 63 Tahir Hocker (90/22), 64 Mike Inman (75/25), 67 Coty Bell (73/22)
RG: 61 Tyron Stewart (91/30), 66 Jonathan Benjamin (71/22)
RT: 75 Brian Oher (80/24), 77 Julian Wilson (78/24)

Some reshuffling following LT Fitzpatrick's departure. Thorpe looks promising and ready to take on the bigger role.

LE: 96 Deshazor White (99/32), 94 Jake Pouncey (99/28), 98 E.J. Newhouse (85/33), 95 George Phillips (85/23)
DT: 93 Brenton Wells (84/24), 97 Justin Howsare (79/27), 91 Torrey Gaines (74/23)
RE: 99 Jack Reed (84/29), 90 Telvin Slade (73/25)

The d-line remains a strength, we'll see how the team uses it this year.

LOLB: 50 Louis Miles (84/25), 45 Matt Boyd (76/28), 52 Mitch Alonso (73/26), 57 Edmond Curry (75/22)
MLB: 56 C.J. Gilbert (84/22), 51 Brian Phillips (78/28), 54 Jesse Perry (76/28), 59 Leger Howard (72/21)
ROLB: 58 Anthony Tripp (77/25), 55 Chris Allen (77/26)
LB/CB: 48 Will Pericak (98/30)

Mostly the same personnel, but the team seems to want to try other options at LB/CB. Louis Miles has the tools to be successful, and so does current SS Antonio Kendricks.

CB: 5 J.J. King (86/25), 24 Darren Hall (86/26), 38 Zach Branch (73/22), 89 Ryan Fusco (80/27)
FS: 42 Dominique Matthews (98/29), 49 Sen'Derrick Hamilton (92/29), 32 Terron Hal (80/23), 37 Matt Allen (77/24), 35 Andrew Long (77/21)
SS: 34 James Janis (97/28), 41 Jermey Bradford (85/25), 26 Antonio Kendricks (77/24), 27 Rob Dennard (77/21), 46 Caushaud Stanford (75/28)

Hall seems to be ready to start following the Quinton Sample trade. There is a logjam at safety, with 7-8 players who have the potential to start for 4 spots (on the safety-heavy packages).

K: 3 Nick Tapper (94/30)
P: 8 Dontrelle Kaepernick (99/38)

Same team as usual.

He is 18 yards shy of 2000 in receptions, and has already passed 5000 all-purpose yards.

He needs one more punt return touchdown to tie Daniel Williams’ record of 13.

129 punt return yards would allow him to tie Williams’ record of 1274.

This is insane

Probably felt overconfident and backed into my own endzone during a punt return. That happened a few times. To achieve those kinds of punt return numbers, I have to live dangerously. This year, it went my way more often than not.

Agreed! Everything aligned but I expect things to be much different next season. I’ll post my final moves and opening day roster this weekend.

Personnel moves

With Eric Wilson holding on to the HB1 spot, the Blizzard traded Zac Ansah (1st overall pick in last draft) and Jonathan Ellerbe (13th overall pick two seasons ago) to the Apocalypse for TE Michael Smith and a 2nd-round pick. For New York, this creates a battle for HB2 and heir of Patrick Jerod-Eddie, who has started to regress.

They traded TE Christian Armstrong and a first-round pick to the Ironmen for a 1st-round pick.

They also traded DB Dominique Matthews to the Vortices for a 1st-round pick.

Anchorage released longtime K/P Dontrelle Kaepernick and signed K/P Tyler Pullard.

The team also released the following players:

QB Gerald Brown
TE Lee Mauro (who signed with the Ironmen)
TE Jon Richardson
TE Taylor Floyd
WR Morgan Rodgers
WR Jimmy Riley
C Coty Bell
RG Jonathan Benjamin
DT Torrey Gaines
DE Telvin Slade
OLB Edmond Curry
MLB Leger Howard
FS Andrew Long
SS Caushaud Stanford

Will start the season injured: C Tahir Hocker and LG Alex Hunt. C Mike Inman and LG Adrian Rogers will start in their place, and G Brandon Showers has been signed as an emergency backup.
