Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
First depth chart
With a very intriguing draft class and many question marks, I will be playing the preseason, not just simulating.
QB: 6 Jason Peterson (98/30), 9 Gerald Brown (78/28), 15 Adrian Washington (74/21)
With a clear cut starter, and a new project in rookie Washington, Gerald Brown could be on the way out through no fault of his own.
HB: 29 Sterling Maclin (91/30), 23 Jonathan Ellerbe (82/22), 40 Jared Williams (82/26), 28 Eric Wilson (75/23)
Following a 3005-yard season, Maclin has started regressing (SPD 94 from 97). Will Anchorage stick with him? If not, Eric Wilson could have a chance of moving up the chart with his speed (SPD 96, ACC 96). Ellerbe has a little less quickness (SPD 93, ACC 95) but he has a shot too.
FB: 43 Jonathan Dorenbos (99/26), 47 Lee Mauro (96/30), 33 Rey Jordan (75/23), 44 Daryl DiMarco (72/21)
TE: 84 Christian Armstrong (96/27), 87 John Aiken (88/24), 83 Kawann Harris (86/23), 80 Jon Housler (81/28)
The addition of DiMarco (SPD 89), Aiken (SPD 84) and Harris (SPD 83) brings speed to this position group, which might get reshuffled before opening the season.
WR: 0 Clinton Ott (92/27), 17 Craig Cox (91/24), 13 Tony Gilmore (83/24), 7 Charles McCoy (82/28), 39 Brandon Dickson (75/22), 10 Morgan Rodgers (78/26)
We don't know if the team can keep (for the long term) 3 players with the potential of being WR1. Dickson is a mystery because he has size and speed (6'7, SPD 99, ACC 91), but is a long way from being a reliable pass catcher (CTH 65). Can they find a way to use his skill set, maybe from the backfield or with short passes?
LT: 78 Kenny Fitzpatrick (98/26)
LG: 62 Alex Hunt (76/22), 60 Aaron Brown (96/34)
C: 68 Eddie Boling (92/27), 64 Mike Inman (73/23)
RG: 61 Tyron Stewart (87/28)
RT: 75 Brian Oher (76/22), 76 Scooby Thorpe (79/23)
There will be a battle at RT, and maybe at one of the guard spots if Inman plays well. With the reshuffling, Aaron Brown has accepted to stay as a mentor and backup.
LE: 96 Deshazor White (98/30), 94 Jake Pouncey (99/26), 98 E.J. Newhouse (87/31), 91 Vance Gostkowski (80/22)
DT: 93 Brenton Wells (80/22), 95 Dexter Anderson (80/28), 97 Justin Howsare (79/25)
RE: 99 Jack Reed (82/27), 90 Telvin Slade (74/23)
The starters are already set in stone, but there will be some battling among the backups.
LOLB: 56 Nate Freeman (81/28), 50 Louis Miles (80/23), 45 Matt Boyd (76/26), 52 Mitch Alonso (73/24)
MLB: 53 Jamie Gronkowski (88/28), 59 Doran Winchester (81/26), 51 Brian Phillips (78/26), 54 Jesse Perry (76/26)
ROLB: 55 Cody Williams (76/28), 58 Anthony Tripp (74/23), 57 Marcel Su'a-Filo (75/31), 92 Justin Larsen (68/21)
LB/CB: 48 Will Pericak (95/28)
If he plays well, Miles could be a starter at either outside spot, and he can help on special teams too. Possible reshuffling there too.
CB: 22 Quinton Sample (97/28), 5 J.J. King (81/23), 24 Darren Hall (85/24), 36 Shaq Watt (78/28), 89 Ryan Fusco (80/25)
FS: 42 Dominique Matthews (96/27), 49 Sen'Derrick Hamilton (89/27), 37 Matt Allen (77/22), 35 Rueben Jensen (70/23)
SS: 34 James Janis (94/26), 41 Jermey Bradford (79/23), 46 Caushaud Stanford (74/26)
With the release of Taylor Grayson, Fusco is switched to CB for special teams. King and Hall have both started games last year, and they will battle in the preseason for the starting job. Matthews is back at FS, this time to start.
K: 3 Nick Tapper (88/28)
P: 8 Dontrelle Kaepernick (99/36)
Same team, but how will they be used?

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Personnel moves
The Blizzard decided to trim its roster to 55 before the first preseason game. They released the following players:
QB Gerald Brown
HB Jared Williams
FB Rey Jordan
WR Charles McCoy
LE Vance Gostkowski
DT Dexter Anderson
OLB Nate Freeman
OLB Justin Larsen
MLB Doran Winchester
FS Rueben Jensen
McCoy signed with the RailRiders and will help fill the void left by Eddie Marz's retirement.
Freeman was signed by the Kingfish and will return to his original inside linebacker position.
The Blizzard also received an offer from the Vortices, who are trying to get back into relevance. San Juan is offering its 1st-round pick for HB Sterling Maclin, who is regressing but still has up to 3 years left in the tank.

Preseason recap
Notes:
-QB Adrian Washington still has to work on his accuracy, but he is starting to create chemistry with receivers.
-In the first two games, HB Sterling Maclin showed he can still play at a high level. Then he struggled in the last two games (against RailRiders and Apocalypse). But then again, so did the other running backs.
-FB Daryl DiMarco has to improve his blocking, but he should become an unexpected weapon on offense. Jonathan Dorenbos is still the starter, but DiMarco should see some time as FB2 and backup TE.
-Brandon Dickson is proving to be more reliable than previously anticipated. He said he is wearing #39 to channel legend Bubba Brady's versatility, and he did just that. Through 4 preseason games, he had 7 touchdown receptions, 2 TD runs, 1 TD pass and 2 punt returns for TDs.
-Still no clear winner for the CB2 spot. Darren Hall had 1 interception to J.J. King's 0, but the former was also targeted more.
-Alex Hunt seems to have won the battle for LG. Brian Oher and Scooby Thorpe also battled for RT, but the result is less clear. We will see on opening day.

Roster moves
The Blizzard released LB Cody Williams to trim their roster to 54.
For the last spot, they traded star HB Sterling Maclin to the Vortices for their 1st-round pick. This is reminiscent of Bubba Brady's trade, but this time, the Vortices have more assets to support their new running back.

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Week 11 update
The Blizzard went unbeaten in the first half, but then did something they rarely do: drop two contests in a row.
First it was against the Apocalypse, who are now standing at 10-0.
Then, after ruminating that loss during their bye week, they had a 4th quarter meltdown against Portland, letting the resilient Kingfish squeeze out the win.
Brandon Dickson has been making some rookie mistakes, but he has also accounted for many touchdowns in many different ways.
Craig Cox dropped a few passes early, so he is mainly returning kicks and punts for now. He has 9 combined TDs so far.
Tony Gilmore seems to be seizing the WR1 spot, but Clinton Ott is still a very effective target.
RB Eric Wilson has been a good replacement for Sterling Maclin, though there were some games where he could find nowhere to go.
At fullback, Jonathan Dorenbos and Daryl DiMarco have been splitting time. The former mainly as a blocker, and the latter as an offensive threat.
Defensively, Deshazor White had a great start to the season, but he has cooled off in the past few weeks. Will Pericak has been very effective too, and rookie Louis Miles has been great in limited time.
Eric Wilson breaks a tackle to score a long touchdown.
Brandon Dickson catches his first career touchdown.
So does Daryl DiMarco.
Wilson breaks another tackle for another long TD.
Tony Gilmore beats Rashad Riley to the endzone.
Dickson finds a crease and makes it all the way to the endzone.
Deshazor White closes in on Kelvin Cooper for the sack.
Brandon Dickson was tried as punt returner, and scored on this play.
J.J. King intercepts a pass and returns it for six.
Craig Cox is still the main returner, and has scored on 5 kicks and 4 punts (including this one) so far.
King is used on offense, and scores this acrobatic touchdown.
In a close game, Louis Miles gets this clutch interception, the first of his career.
Gilmore makes this endzone catch.
DiMarco breaks a tackle and makes it to the endzone.
Tyrod White beats Quinton Sample to put his team on the board.
Clinton Ott replies by beating Tim McCown and making it to the endzone.
Weston Swoope turns this short pass into a 78-yard touchdown.
Avery Southward targets Swoope again, but this time, King has the clutch interception returned for a score.
But Patrick Jerod-Eddie seals the deal with this short TD.
Scott Williamson had a great game against his former team. Here, he sacks Jason Peterson to force a 3rd-and-17, which would not be converted.
DiMarco makes this great catch at the back of the endzone, in traffic.
Williamson surges into the backfield and records the safety.
Jabari McCray had two long TDs. He beats Sample in the endzone, then find himself completely uncovered for his 2nd TD.
Followed by two big guys, Jason Peterson should have just cut his losses. Instead, he forces a play, and Brett Gholston comes down with the interception.
Trying to protect a slim lead, Craig Cox forgets to protect the ball. Donald Jean-Francois returns it for a TD and a 6-point lead. In position to come back from behind, Anchorage would give the ball to Dickson, who would fumble too. Game over.
The Blizzard went unbeaten in the first half, but then did something they rarely do: drop two contests in a row.

------------------------------------------------------------
Brandon Dickson has been making some rookie mistakes, but he has also accounted for many touchdowns in many different ways.

Game over.
Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Season 84 recap
The Blizzard the final game against the Vipers to fall to 13-3 and drop to the #3 seed. They will face the 11-5 Vipers again next week in the wild card game. With that final win, Dallas clinched the #6 seed over the Kingfish.
With nearly 6000 passing yards and almost 80 TD passes, Jason Peterson was named MVP. He had one 2000-yard receiver in Tony Gilmore, and two 1000-yard receivers in Clinton Ott and Brandon Dickson. The latter also added 357 yards and 8 TDs on the ground, to fall just short of OROY honors.
LB Will Pericak had 42 sacks and 2 interceptions to be named DPOY. DEs Deshazor White and Jake Pouncey both had strong first halves, but cooled off down the stretch.
Returner Chris Cox will have to work on his kick returns, but he returned 9 more punts to the house this year. Definitely something worth building on.
Tony Gilmore avoids a defender on his way to the endzone.
Anthony Tripp gets his first career interception.
Scary moment, but Jamie Gronkowski would only miss a few series with a sore leg.
Craig Cox scores on a punt return.
Brandon Dickson can do it all. He dives for a touchdown, then lays this hard hit on special teams.
Clinton Ott scores against the Beacons, then the Kingfish.
Cox eludes a tackle to score another punt return TD.
Daryl DiMarco makes it to the endzone, then J.J. King helps secure the win with the interception.
Gilmore makes the catch over the defender, then makes it all the way for the touchdown.
In the final week, Eric John escaped from a pile-up to score the first TD of the game.
LB Michael Sproles had a great game. Here, he snatches the interception.
John makes the deciding catch to propel the Vipers into the playoffs.

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Playoffs recap
The Vipers opened the score with this catch by Jon Watts at the back of the endzone.
J.J. King had this pick-six, and another in the 4th quarter.
Christian Armstrong was not targeted often during the regular season, but he scores an important touchdown.
Jason Peterson starts the game by throwing to CB Rashad Riley.
Laurence Vaccaro then makes this catch and breezes past J.J. King for the score.
Anchorage ties the score with a fake punt rushed all the way to the endzone.
Kevin Walker catches a short pass and dives between defenders and the referee.
CB Nick Drake makes a key sack on 3rd down at the end of the 2nd half. Anchorage would choose to go for it on 4th down, and be stopped at the 10-yard line.
Birmingham was going to go to the locker room with a 7-point advantage, but RB Kevin Walker avoided defenders and made it all the way for the 90-yard touchdown.
FB Tyrod Hekker turns a short pass into a touchdown.
Late in the game, Charles McCoy returns a punt for the score.
For another year, the Apocalypse and the RailRiders would face in the playoffs, this time in the AFC championship. The battle was close, but New York outlasted Birmingham by a touchdown, thanks to 102 yards on the ground and 2 TDs by Patrick Jerod-Eddie.
In the Super Bowl game played in Miami, New York would face the San Juan Vortices, who successfully returned to relevance after many years in the bottom of the rankings. They had to give their 1st-round pick, but acquired a sensational running back in Sterling Maclin. His numbers were not as high as with the Blizzard, especially in the TD column (1779 yards and 9 TDs, 584 receiving yards and 2 TDs), but he helped legitimize his team's ground game.
Back to the game. San Juan struck first with two long touchdowns. Damarious Washington returned the opening kickoff on 102 yards for the score, then Maclin rushed on 80 yards for the 14-0 advantage.
New York would tie with TD passes from Avery Southward to Weston Swoope (18 yards) and Ethan Hawkins (1 yard). But before the half, Maclin would score his 2nd TD, this time on 3 yards.
A field goal would give the Vortices a 10-point lead, then the defense would do the rest. Final score: Vortices 24, Apocalypse 14.
Congratulations, Vortices!
The Vipers opened the score with this catch by Jon Watts at the back of the endzone.
J.J. King had this pick-six, and another in the 4th quarter.

Game Log Ends
------------------------------------------------------------
For another year, the Apocalypse and the RailRiders would face in the playoffs, this time in the AFC championship.
