Playbook with lots of pre-snap motion

Postby solarkev » Wed Nov 20, 2024 12:19 pm

Here is a new custom playbook based mostly on the Madden 25 Dolphins offense playbook.

Back Story
As the years have gone by, all the teams in the NFL are using more and more pre-snap motion. Many teams are using motion on over 50% of their plays. The Madden playbooks haven't kept up with this trend. But, I noticed that the Madden 25 Miami Dolphins playbook has a large amount of motion plays for several formations. (Why EA Sports chose the Dolphins primarily for this, I don't know). So, I decided to construct a more modern playbook for Madden 08. I was actually envisioning the Detroit Lions while making it. I used the playbook art from Madden-School.com for these (I do not have Madden 25). Occasionally, I would look up youtube videos to see plays running in Madden 25.

Playbook features
1. Lots of pre-snap motion plays (called "auto-motion" in Packfan's editor)
2. I also used auto-motion to transform some formations to others and then used plays from those formations too.
3. Modern formations: Singleback, Pistol, and Shotgun with various personnel groupings.
4. There are about 180 plays in the playbook. If I were to use more, then the book would not be editable because the editor would need to use play compression. I wanted to be able to fix problems, should they be discovered. I did test every play with multiple defenses using Madden's practice mode.
5. I was careful to set "playtype", "PLF", and "PBI" values for each play and SETT and SITT for each formation. This alphabet soup is used by the Madden 08 game engine to call plays.

PBI values are described in this thread: https://www.footballidiot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=10359
PLF values in this thread: https://www.footballidiot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=23836
Great play design advice here: https://www.footballidiot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=23531

The authors of these threads and many others have contributed knowledge to improve playbook making. I freely use routes and advice from many places on this site. The new motions especially took a lot of work; many hours of testing and tweaking. I almost gave up on the project a few times.

Please try this out and let me know your opinions, especially any issues that you discover (hopefully not many or none).
