Thanks to ALUIGI over at Zenhax.com, who is the author of QuickBMS, we now have a bms script for decompressing Madden dat files. This works similarly to the DFR except that it can decompress compressed files within the dats.
I posted on Zenhax's forums both a compressed and uncompressed version of the same dat as well the decompression algorithm I had found within the mainapp.exe. Aluigi took the information and within a day translated what I had given him into (as far as I can tell) a perfectly working script for decompressing the dat.
Click the link to download the Quick BMS GUI, which also contains a readme with specific instructions to use this tool to extract the dats (it's not difficult). Also Aluigi gave me the C code as well as the script so if we wanted to add a decompression function to the DFR we could probably adapt his code accordingly.
Edit: 1/4/21
This link takes you to Stingray's post with for downloading his utility that incorporates Aluigi's code:

Nice. Hopefully if this works, someone will finally make all of the dat files available uncompressed...for reference purposes

Testing with the gamedata dat, I will need this for playbook work, I am trying to make the Packers more realistic, a tough undertaking.

You going for that one too? Nice. So far I uncompressed Gamedata.dat. And got a whole bunch of other .dat files that I can't uncompress. Not sure if I should change the extension to .pbd or .pbo

Have not been able to get farther than those .dat files. Other than making your own playbook ... not sure. I once tried to replicate the Madden NFL 16 Steelers Playbook. Stopped because it has SO MUCH STUFF.

Actually those dats look like they are opened in the db editor.

You are correct, I could open it with the DB Editor. The thing is, how we edit it?
