Well, almost your last line makes me think you haven't really touched current gen Madden for any significant length of time.
18 introduced Zone Match principle defenses (think of zone defense that converts to man on-the-fly depending on personnel and positioning). They are pretty game-changing and mirror what you see in NFL currently.
Also, special teams got some much-needed attention with legitimate non-glitchy kick block mechanics and seriously nice trick plays.
Additionally, there's Aggressive, RAC, and Possession catching; updated offensive hot routes; the ability to hot route defenders without selecting them first; The ability to change formation audibles on-the-fly...
I'll just stop now. Anyone reading this will realize that after a decade the game is drastically different or they won't and nothing I say will change their mind.
You're not gonna find many EA sympathizers here.
They alienated this audience for over a decade, we're all p!ssed off about it, and aren't afraid to say so.
I played a lot of MUT last year. Its entertaining, IMO. I dabbled a bit in '12 with the roster editor, but it wasn't a noteworthy experience, outside of full roster capability.
I don't think the gameplay has drastically improved since Madden '07. Every versions has its quirks, money plays, and glaring flaws.
Visually it can be stunning. But I come from the Tecmo-era. I care a lot more about gameplay, and an engrossing experience. That's not Madden at this point. The only thing that made it engrossing is this community.
.. I HOPE this is a step in the right direction. What I really hope is PC becomes more franchise-centric, while the consoles continue to gravitate toward MUT... what I expect is, this is just a strait port like the old days.
