Junior college transfer quarterback Colby Porter Jr. wowed the coaching staff throughout the spring and claimed the starting job early on. Some pundits were skeptical of the “small” lefties abilities and if he could play well at this level. His debut on the road at Minnesota should quiet them at least for a little while.

Porter threw for 259 yards and a pair of scores and also ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-25 Oregon State win.

“Big stadium. Loud. Colby never looked like it was too big of a stage. He played very well. Made some great plays. Made some even better decisions with the ball.” Head coach Gary Andersen said when asked about hi quarterback's performance.

Porter capped the Beavers first possession with a four yard touchdown pass to tight end Ricky Ortiz. Porter was pressured by the Minnesota defense on the play. He moved to his left and stood tall to deliver the pass then took his first big hit of the game. He propped himself up to see the result of the pass then jumped to his feet to join the celebration.

The teams exchanged field goals to bring to score to 10-3 at the end of the first quarter. Minnesota kicked another field goal early in the second quarter to cut the lead to 10-6. Porter then led a pair of long drives and capped each with a rushing touchdown. The first came on a quarterback sneak from a yard out and the second via a two yard run on a bootleg. Minnesota finally found the endzone before halftime on a Leidner to Smith 10 yard pass. The Beavers led 24-13 at halftime.

Midway through the third quarter Porter Jr threw his second touchdown of the game, finding Seth Collins open on a post route. Collins caught the ball in stride and sprinted into the endzone for a 41 yard score. The point after by Owens made it 31-13 Oregon State.

Minnesota cut the lead to 31-19 on a five yard Smith touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Owens extended the lead to 34-19 with a 29 yard field goal on the next possession for the Beavers. Leidner found Wolitarsky for a 12 yard touchdown, making it 34-25 after a second failed two point attempt.

Oregon State put the game away with a long scoring drive capped by Porter Jr's third rushing touchdown of the game with just over a minute left to play. Their two point conversion attempt was successful and the final score was 42-25 Oregon State.

Porter Jr. completed 16 of 24 pass attempts for 259 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He ran the ball 18 times, gaining a team high 102 yards and scoring three times.

“Heck of a debut I'd say.” Oregon State co-offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven said during the post game press conference. “He's an electrifying player and I think he's going to surprise a lot of folks this year and going forward.”

“Those guys up front got it done today. They made it easy for me. Guys around me making plays. It was a whole team effort really.” Porter Jr. explained after the game when asked about his impressive debut.

Porter was hurried a few times in the game but was only sacked once.

Oregon State travels to Salt Lake City to face 1-1 Utah next week.

Oregon State upset a tough Utah team on the road last night to improve their record to 2-0. Sophomore QB Colby Porter Jr. threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 93 yards and a score.

Oregon State got on the board first with a 33 yard field goal by Garrett Owens in the first quarter. The Beavers extended their lead to 10-0 when Porter connected with tight end Ricky Ortiz for a four yard touchdown early in the second quarter.

Utah finally got on the board shortly after when runningback Tani Leha'Uli scored on a three yard run and took their first lead of the game on their next possession via a four yard touchdown run by quarterback Troy Williams.

Oregon State answered before halftime when Porter connected with Jordan Villamin for a 43 yard touchdown. Owens' kick made it 17-14 Beavers at the break.

Owens connected on a 24 yard field goal early on in the third quarter, extending the Beavers lead to 20-14.

Utah bounced right back, retaking the lead on a five yard touchdown run by Tim Patrick.

Just before the end of the third quarter Porter and Villamin connected again, this time for a 49 yard score. Porter found Seth Collins on a slant to get the two point conversion and give Oregon State a 28-21 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Neither team could add any points through the bulk of the fourth quarter with Utah punting and turning the ball over on downs and Oregon State missing a pair of field goals.

With two and a half minutes left to play Porter fought his way into the endzone from two yards out on a play that looked like it was going nowhere. Owens' kick made it 35-21 and the Utes turned the ball over on downs, allowing the Beavers to run out the clock and secure the 14 point win.

PORTER JR SOMEHOW FINDS THE ENDZONE ON THIS FOURTH QUARTER RUN TO PUT THE GAME AWAY FOR OREGON STATE

“It was a great game for us out there. One of the best I've been in. He (Porter) a baller. Nation gonna be on notice soon.” Villamin, who caught six passes for 162 yards and a pair of scores to lead all receivers, said after the game.

Porter passed the praise to others.

“Jordan made some great plays, caught some passes that could have been better and made some plays with it. The line held up good, that's a tough front seven they've got and the line held up good.”

“It's a great win. A great start to the season for us with a pair of tough road wins. We're feeling pretty good about our team.” Head coach Gary Andersen said following the win.

Oregon State will host FCS Idaho State next week in their home opener.

Oregon State quarterback Colby Porter Jr. accounted for a school record five rushing touchdowns and also threw for two more as Oregon State improved to 3-0 with a thrashing of Idaho State yesterday. Porter Jr. ran for 206 yards on 23 carries and completed 18 of 27 pass attempts for 314 yards. He also caught three passes for 77 yards, bringing his total to 597 yards on the day.

“He was doing it all out there today.” Co-offensive coordinator T.J. Woods said after the game. “He kept bugging us for a few snaps at receiver and it looks like he can do that too.”

Porter found the endzone for the first time on Oregon State's first possession, running in from four yards out.

PORTER JR SCORES THE FIRST OF MANY TDS

Following an Idaho State field goal Porter scored again, this time on a 15 yard run that put Oregon State on top 14-3. After that the rout was on.

Porter scored twice in the second quarter on runs of four and seven yards. Then, just before halftime, he connected with receiver Seth Collins on a post and the receiver went 80 yards for a score. The Beavers led 35-3 at the break.

Idaho State finally put together a good drive and found the endzone on a one yard run by Ford in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 35-10. Porter answered a few minutes later with a 32 yard touchdown run.

PORTER JR FINDS THE ENDZONE YET AGAIN

After a four yard touchdown pass to Timmy Hernandez on the first play of the fourth quarter put the Beavers up 49-10 Porter's day was over, at least at quarterback.

Marcus McMaryion and Darell Garretson rotated at QB for the rest of the game. McMaryion struggled, completing zero of his five pass attempts. Garretson was better, completing four of ten attempts.

The story of the fourth quarter was Porter Jr's brief appearance at wide receiver. On the first play he was in he ran past his defender and caught a pass for 50 yards. He would catch two more passes, totaling 77 yards, before he was relegated to the sideline for good.

“Just trying to have some fun you know.” Porter Jr. explained when asked about playing receiver. “We've done that a bit in practice and I've been working on coach Woods a lot. I think he wanted to shut me up to be honest.”

Both Woods and Porter were unsure if it will happen again.

“I'm not sure.” Woods explained. “I'm not sure we'll see that in a game again.”

With Porter doing so much of the heavy lifting in the running game there wasn't much left for others to do. The second leading rusher was Ryan Nall who carried the ball seven times for 31 yards. Victor Bolden Jr carried for 23 yards on a jet sweep. Seth Collins led the receivers with 126 yards and a score on four receptions. Porter was the second leading receiver.

Oregon State improves to 3-0 on the season. They will host Colorado next Saturday.
