2018 Offensive and Defensive Playbooks and Schemes

Postby jose21crisis » Wed May 02, 2018 8:17 pm

This is my research for the 2018-2019 NFL Season. Basically, here I'll post what I consider the offensive and defensive playbooks that most closely resembles what that team could run during the 2018 season. This is an extension of the work done here. This will be updated through the season as the team's actually show their schemes and more correct playbooks can be used, as well as possible changes that could be done to the depth charts (After Rogerjinx releases his roster) to match better their assigned team. Feel free to comment about what you think about each selection.

Note: For all intents and purposes, no playbooks with the Wildcat set will be used here. Madden 08 is not designed to deal with the Wildcat, which can make it game breaking. Additionally to that, I will list play books that have the Gun formation. There are 2 playbooks that don't have the Gun, and they won't be included in this selection.

2018 Coach Philosophies and Playbooks:
Bears:
Matt Nagy (3-4 with some hybrid looks, Cover 2 Zone):
Offensive Playbook: Eagles (Has Empty sets, Trips/Bunch and multiple QB Rollouts. Also. a fair amount of trick plays involving reverses.)

Pass/Run Defense Ratio: 50% (Nickel 2-4-5 and Dime 4-1-6 should be favored)

Bengals:
Marvin Lewis (4-3, Zone):
Offensive Playbook: Trick Plays (Bunch/Trips sets, Sluggo routes, a few Empty sets, some QB Runs)
Defensive Playbook: Vikings (4-3 with Nickel 4-2-5, 3-3-5, Dime 4-1-6, Dollar 3-2-6 and Quarter 3-1-7)
Pass/Run Defense Ratio: 51% (Nickel 3-3-5 and Quarter 3-1-7 should be favored)

Bills:
Sean McDermott (4-3, Zone):
Offensive Playbook: Balanced (A few Empty sets, Full House featuring an H-Back. Decent amount of trick plays, featuring HB Pass and Flea Flickers)
Defensive Playbook: Vikings (4-3 with Nickel 4-2-5, 3-3-5, Dime 4-1-6, Dollar 3-2-6 and Quarter 3-1-7)

Jason Garrett (4-3, Tampa 2):

Teams that don't run the Wild Cat... the HB could be subbed out for the QB

Thanks Bus. I'm trying to figure out a way to implement a 3 or 4 safety defensive set. I guess it depends whenever rogerjinx's Roster has Edmunds or Allen as a Safety or Linebacker. Formations subs could be used as well, as well as a custom playbook. I know that the 2 formations that have 3 safeties by default are the Dime 3-2-6 and the Quarter sets.

Formations subs could be used as well, as well as a custom playbook. I know that the 2 formations that have 3 safeties by default are the Dime 3-2-6 and the Quarter sets.

So, I think I figured out how to make a 3-3-5 Nickel with 3 safeties and 2 corners, having Davis and Burnett playing deep, and Edmunds playing as a box safety. The playbook I assigned to Pittsburgh, the "3-4" playbook, has the 3-3-5 Nickel set. 3 down linemen, 3 linebackers (The MLB#2 is removed), 3 corners and the safeties. That formation has a Formation Sub called "SS2 Swap". Assuming that on roger's roster, Edmunds is a Strong Safety, and in the depth chart he is SS#2, when using that Formation Sub he will appear in the slot corner position. However, when using the "Show Blitz" audible, he will move into the box, kind of occupying the space the MLB#2 should be occupying. This also happens if the offense doesn't have any slot receiver in the side of the field the slot corner is. If there is a slot receiver, the slot corner/safety will go to cover him. The general result is a 3-4 looking set with 3 down lineman, 3 linebackers, a box safety, 2 corners and 2 deep safeties.

jose21crisis have you tried editing the defenses in the defensive playbook editor in the mad mod x utilities folder? you can change which player will line up at whichever position and you can even change where the players line up, might be worth looking at if you haven't already. i don't think you can edit the default playbooks though, you would need to save a playbook first in madden itself and then edit it, or you could use one of the user created playbooks found on the site.

The idea of this project is to get the most accurate scheme for each team using the playbooks the FF/FI mod has by default. I know that a custom playbook would solve a lot (I made a few custom defensive playbooks, one of which I use in my Journal), but the general idea is using the default playbooks.

I found this article from the always good Football Outsiders very interesting. In a copycat league, are teams pulling back from 11 personnel out of necessity or out of strategy?

Here's the follow up to that. https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat- ... l-analysis

Nickel is still the primary defensive set, but it went down a bit along with 11 personnel. There is still a lot of Nickel sets ... unless you are Cleveland or the Rams or the Panthers, then you have base pretty much all day. If you are Minnesota or Atlanta, then it's Nickel all day. Or, if you are the Chargers, pretty much Dime all day. Then you have the mutated thing that is the New England defense. And the balanced likes of Houston, Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
