At least with the 8 team playoff, more teams would get a shot at it. I remember this same type of scenario happened some years ago, when Nebraska played Miami for the national championship, which they had no business playing in and I am a Husker fan. The Huskers didn't even play in their own conference championship. This is one of the things that the playoff system was instituted to overcome and we just had the same thing happen. A team got back-doored into the playoff system this time. Although Alabama is a much stronger team than was Nebraska at the time, they had no business playing for the title IMHO, Nebraska then or Alabama now.
I agree UCF got robbed, again IMHO.
