How to - Editing and Importing Portraits
Re: How to - Editing and Importing Portraits
I have already confirmed this by making soloplayers in the past. All the steps are the same except that instead of having a 192x192 image you make a 512x512 image.

What happens if, upon attempting to open the DDS file in the DAT Editor Xtreme, I get a dialog box saying "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application... Object reference not set to an instance of an object." ? What can I do there?
Re: How to - Editing and Importing Portraits
Make sure to load your portrait pack first, then the individual portrait that you want to use.

Yeah, already did that, and the default portraits show up fine. Then I try to load the DDS files and that dialog box comes up.
Re: How to - Editing and Importing Portraits
Is it a portrait that you made yourself, or one downloaded from somewhere else? Also, is the portrait pack the default pack from Madden, or does it go with a different roster that you downloaded?

I tried to make it myself. I tried it once with the default DAT file, and once with the historical mod DAT file courtesy of guamyankee. I wanted to try doing my own portraits of historical players.
Re: How to - Editing and Importing Portraits
Strange. The default portrait pack shouldn't have any problems, so in that case, it may be the way the portrait was created. Several follow up questions:
1. Did you make sure that the dimensions were 96x96, 192x192, or any other multiple of 96? Anything even slightly different will make the portrait unreadable for Madden.
2. Did you try saving your image as a dds file with a program other than PhotoShop?
3. Did you make sure to use the same pallete and MIP Map settings as shown in the video and accompanying screenshot?
Generally, doing one of those steps differently only distorts the image, rather than making the editor crash, but I don't have many other ideas. Could you post the portrait as well? If I can import it, it rules out a problem with portrait itself, and means it has to do with the portrait pack or Dat editor.

Re: How to - Editing and Importing Portraits
Do you always have to use an existing player ID number if you're adding a new portrait instead of replacing an existing one?
Re: How to - Editing and Importing Portraits
For player portraits, you can use Stingray's Dat Editor, go to the tools section, and then click "Expand DAT" to add new portrait slots on and use those. There is a limit somewhere down the line to how many player portrait IDs you can have, but I haven't managed to reach that limit yet, so no worries.
For coaches, though, you have to reuse only the game's IDs. If you add new ones, the game won't show the new portrait IDs and just use a blank silhouette.
