Annandale Atoms Freshman(Va.)

We had our first Freshman scrimmage on Thursday...we played 2 x 16 plays ( offense-8 Defense-8)vs Two different teams. First up was against Alexandria City HS ( formally known as TC Williams (yes! remember the Titans fame). Defense did its job holding them to 0 points. Offensively we moved the ball 40 yards then stalled. Next up was Oakton HS same out come on defense but the offense made many mental mistakes and fumbled.

Overall the Freshman played well, but there is a lot of room for improvement. Our next scrimmage is on Wednesday September 1. This will be vs Robinson HS

Well scrimmage #2 is is the books.....again first round both offense and defense did their jobs,, and then again round two was not as well.

Robinson put their #1 squads back in during 2X 10 minute running quarters v Atoms backups..
The honest truth as well as we start we just run out of gas... out of the 17 players we dressed 14 played all three phases of the game.. the other 3 well if they can tie their shoes that is a plus. We did have another 6 players join the team Saturday and have yet to be able to practice.

We are a work in progress, but I will say that we are getting better every single practice. Many of our players have never played football before.

Tuesday 9/14....
Annandale Atoms Freshman team (away) took on the Thomas Edison Eagles
Final score: 10-6 victory for the Atoms (1-0)

After a scoreless 1st quarter..
the Atoms scored on a 60 yard pass play, where the WR broke 5 tackle and then out ran the defense for the score.(Wuhrer to Belteton)(kick good)
then as the clock was winding down the Atoms kicked a 30 yard FG as time expired to give a 10-0 lead. (Belteton kick)

Edison's only score was a 45 yard fumble recovery and return for a TD ( kick failled)

Atoms defense forced 5 turnover and did not let the Eagles past their own 40 yard line until 45 sec mark of the 4th quarter.

here is the latest update ....
On Thursday 9/23, the Atoms faced Lake Braddock Bruins at Lake Braddock.
Well the Bruins were to much for the Atoms as the pounded the Atoms 28-0. We were out played and out matched as the Bruins had nearly 50 players on their Freshman squad. They just wore us down with their speed and size.

Monday 9/27 the Atoms vs the Justice Wolves at Annandale HS.
After a 3 and out on our first offensive possession, the defense slammed the door on the wolves. The Atoms got TDs runs by Qb Lukas Wuhrer (2) and
Rb Dominic Vejcik and a smothering defense..led by Jordy Lopez-Funes, Nemo Carter and Vincent Pham to a 21-0 victory.

well Thursday night Atoms v Hayfield Hawks...

Atoms took a beating and tried a second half comeback but fell short 28-14.

A tale of two halves the first was all Hawks as the Atoms had 2 blocked punts and INT that set up scores.

The 2nd half the Atoms came to life scoring 2 TDs (one on a 70 yard TD pass), but falling short...

Atoms now 3-2-1

8 day stretch with 3 games record 1-1-1

With now 2 games left in the season ...the Atoms will go for back to back wins to finish 5-2-1

Dominic Vejcik led the way with 5 TD runs
QB Lukas Wehrer threw for a TD on his only pass attempt
Defense forced 3 Turn Overs (3 fumbles ) along with 3 sacks

All backups got to play in the second half with a running clock ( 35 points ahead the clock keeps running )

Tonight was the final game this season...

A dominating defense and an offense that ground and pounded the Justice defense into giving up in the 3rd quarter.

The Freshman Atoms finished this year 5-2-1.

Best record in the last 6 years, my 3rd season with Atoms as Assistant coach. This was the best group we have had in my years . I am very proud of the young men I got to teach, I had a hand in al facets of the team.

Atoms recorded 3 shut outs, outscoring their opponents 104-0 (174-80 season totals)

Now on to the off season and next year...
