Tom Brady just signed a three-year contract extension, that will make him a Patriot up until 2017, yeah, this might not surprise anyone the thing is that, according to a source with knowledge of the contract itself the contract structure will look like this:
2013: $13.8 million
2014: $14.8 million
2015: $13 million
2016: $14 million
2017: $15 million
Yup, all that is much less then average salaries of Peyton Manning ($19.2 million) and Drew Brees ($20 million)
Of course every dime of this deal is guaranteed all the way up to 2017 but that helps the Patriots a lot with possible cap issues for this and even next offseason. The Patriots had a 18.5 million in cap space before the Brady's restructured contract, now they got $27 million.
With all this I think it's pretty sure the Pats keeps Welker too.
Brady is a class act

Hmm, Brady is 35 now, in 2017 he will be 39, I can't see him playing until then. The contract is great for the Patriots' cap in the short run, but if I'm not mistaken, Brady could retire after 2015 at 37 and still collect the last two years of salary without even being in the NFL. I just don't think this was a smart move in the long run.

If he's healthy, I can see Brady retire when he gets another ring. He doesnt run outside the pocket and defensive players dont dare hit him. Do the pats have Brady's sucessor yet? Ryan Malett, haven't seen much of his work.
If this deal means the pats can resign welker, great. Chemistry between welker and brady has always been there since welkers arrival in 07. Maybe use some of the money to bring back moss and do another 16-0 run.

You're right about it might hurt them in the long term, but the message is clear, they want to get another SB ring with Brady and their key players as of now, they'll be adding depth to key positions through draft and let Brady mentor Mallett (there's a possibility that Pats gets another QB through draft in the coming years to be Brady's succesor) the idea looks like: win a championship now, retain key talent, add depth the coming years and prepare their next franchise quarterback.
Doesn't look specially bad at all.

Well Mallett haven't been exposed too much yet, but I think there must be something special about the kid, the Patriots had Mallett as the best QB in the 2011 Draft Class. Brian Hoyer was released this season and the Patriots didn't tried to bring someone, leaving Mallett as the second stringer, to me this speaks much, usually Belichick is pretty capable of drafting talented players that other teams often pass by, it looks like Belichick sees something good on Mallett

Re: Tom Brady's new extension
honestly... this isn't that ground breaking of a deal.... Why? Brady is getting MORE money and the Patriots get more cap space.
I'm sorry.. nothing against Brady but to be a class act... you've gotta be taking a pay-cut.

Vic Ketchman of Packers.com wrote:Brady was due $15 million in salary in each of 2013 and 2014 in the old deal. The Patriots gave that to him in a $30 million signing bonus. The paragraph fives (salary) are $1 million in ’13 and $2 million in ’14 and both are fully guaranteed. He was going to get $30 million over the next two years; now he’ll get $33 million. They added three years to the contract at salaries of $7, $8 and $9 million. Those are guaranteed against injury. If he’s on the roster on the final day of the ’14 season, all of those paragraph fives are guaranteed for skill. His cap number went from $21.8 million in each of ’13 and ’14 to $13.8 million in ’13 and $14.8 million in ’14. He did not take less money, and if he gets to the last years of this contract, they’ll likely do a new deal and that’ll give him more money. He created more cap room now by back-loading his contract and pushing money out. It’s not uncommon for star players to agree to restructure their deals to create cap room. Usually that’s done by converting salary to signing bonus one year at a time. What’s different about this deal is that it’s been restructured and extended to guarantee all of the money in the deal.
Re: Tom Brady's new extension
You have to be dumb if Brady did the new deal for less money. Smart move by Brady, NE gets more cap space, and gets more money in the end.

That entirely depends on your goals...older players like the recently retired Donald Driver & Ray Lewis each might work out a deal on a reduced pay in order to remain with a particular team.
I don't see anything particularly "dumb" for taking a reduction in pay if there was a good reason to do it....
Avoiding relocation in whats likely your final season
Get another Lombardi if you're on a contending team...
Hell... Peyton Manning owns tons of Papa John's stores in Denver.... If facing relocation... I'm sure playing for reduced pay in order to stay in Denver would be like the best for PR and sales in his stores which could in affect make him MORE money.
RGIII could be a similar case... had he not had so many endorsement deals he prob could've negotiated for a larger contract with the RedSkins
Besides... I can't feel sorry for for multimillionaires losing a million here and there

Yep, getting paid millions to play a game mostly everyone can play.

No but still, you shouldn't be paid millions of dollars every YEAR to play a GAME. In the old days, it was just a few hundred per game for the stars, and next to nothing for the rest. The players played not for the money, but for the love of the game. (By the way, I'm not 60, even though I sound like I am... I'm 17 lol)
