This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Up by three? This make absolutely no sense.... unless......

Makes no sense at all. Yes, scoring the TD earlier would have left the Cowboys with slightly more time, but (besides scoring twice) they'd have still needed to recover and onside kick which, from 200-2012, had less then a 20% success rate when the other team was expecting it.
