Adding players to teams in Superstar

Hi all, I'm having trouble adding Free Agents to teams in Superstar mode. The CPU GMs like to cut players with high salaries, so Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Donald and other star players will be free agents by the end of the first season.

I tried adding them back to their respective teams and adding contracts, and making sure FAs don't have contracts, but the game crashes during the "Resign Players" period. Are there any workarounds to this?
