cause(s) of in-game system crash = overheating?

I have this running fine on an old XP laptop, but it crashes periodically resulting in a blue screen system crash. This worries me because I feel like eventually my OS is going to get corrupted due to too many crashes.

The most recent crash occurred when I was reviewing the replay of a play.

I have searched the forum(s) and the troubleshooting section, and these crashes seem pretty common (unfortunately). Also, most of the posts there seem to address problems with M08, but my issues are with M04, which is why I posted here.

If it is because my system is overheating (for example), I can install it on a newer gaming laptop with more resources, but I would hate to go through that process only to find out it is a problem in the game code itself.
