Oakland Raiders
vs.
Philadelphia Eagles
Originally played on January 25, 1981, at the Louisiana Superdome, here is the recap from the actual game...
The lasting image from this Super Bowl is that of Raiders running back Kenny King dashing down the left sideline with a pass from Jim Plunkett for the Super Bowl-record 80-yard touchdown that gave the Raiders a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
It came on third-and-4, two plays after Max Runager's punt backed the Raiders to their 14-yard line.
The pass to King was the second of 3 touchdown passes for Plunkett, who was voted the game's most valuable player. The 10-year veteran had been picked up by owner Al Davis in 1978. Said Raiders head coach Tom Flores: "All Jim needed was for someone to believe in him."
Plunkett's first strike in Super Bowl XV, a 2-yard touchdown pass to Cliff Branch, came on the seventh play of a short drive. Linebacker Rod Martin set it up when he intercepted Ron Jaworski's pass at the Philadelphia 47 and returned it 17 yards.
The Eagles managed a field goal as the second quarter began, as Tony Franklin's 30-yard kick finished a drive inside the Raiders' 20. Philadelphia put together an even deeper drive later in the half, moving 62 yards to the 11 before Franklin's attempt from 28 yards was blocked by linebacker Ted Hendricks.
The Raiders' third touchdown drive, a 76-yard dash in 5 plays at the outset of the third quarter, took only 2 minutes 36 seconds. Plunkett completed passes to King (13 yards) and Bob Chandler (32 yards) before hitting Branch for 29 yards and the score.
Martin intercepted his second pass of the game on the Eagles' next drive. The Raiders turned it into a 46-yard field goal by Chris Bahr. The Eagles took 12 plays to go 88 yards for their only touchdown of the day. Jaworski threw 8 yards to tight end Keith Krepfle for the score. Then the Raiders went on a clock-killing drive, moving 72 yards before Bahr kicked a 35-yard field goal to finish the scoring.
Time to find out how the rematch played out...
Philadelphia comes to the line on the game's opening drive.
Raiders' safety Burgess Owens converges on the play to stop Leroy Harris and force an Eagles' punt.
Ron Jaworski drops back in the pocket.
The battle of the #65s, as Charlie Johnson takes on Mickey Marvin.
Harold Carmichael is slow to get up after taking a big hit.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Tony Franklin puts the Eagles on the board first with a 55-yard bomb.
Philadelphia linebacker Jerry Robinson reads the eyes of Jim Plunkett and picks him off.
Matt Millen trips up Wilbert Montgomery for no gain.
Tony Franklin adds a 50-yarder to make it 6-0.
Arthur Whittington returns the ensuing kickoff 99 yards to give Oakland the lead at 7-6.
Field-level action in the second quarter.
Art Shell blocks Carl Hairston.
Jim Plunkett sets up.
Mike Davis gets set to pick off a pass intended for Harold Carmichael and returns it 34 yards to put the Raiders up 14-6.
The first half closes with Tony Franklin's third field goal of the day to cut the Oakland Raiders' lead to 14-9.
Kenny King was held to 31 yards on 18 carries.
Tony Franklin's fourth field goal of 50 yards or more (this one from 51) made it 14-12.
A Kenny King fumble resulted in yet another field goal from Tony Franklin, giving Philadelphia the lead at 15-14.
Charlie Johnson torpedoes toward Jim Plunkett.
Hall of Famer Ray Guy gets set for his ninth punt of the afternoon.
Field goal number six for Tony Franklin made it 18-14.
Randy Logan sacks Jim Plunkett on a safety blitz.
Charlie Johnson and Mickey Marvin continue their battle in the trenches.
With just 52 seconds left in regulation, Jim Plunkett finds Cliff Branch for a 60-yard score to give Oakland a 21-18 lead.
But Philadelphia musters a drive into field-goal range and the by now sore right foot of Tony Franklin boots home a 44 yard field goal to send the contest into overtime.
The Eagles win the toss and take the opening possession of the sudden-death overtime.
Wally Henry is brought down by Mike Davis and Lester Hayes after a key first-down catch.
Tony Franklin attempts a 39-yarder for the win...
...and his kick is true for his eighth field goal of the game as Philadelphia wins a thriller.
The Philadelphia Eagles exact revenge on the Raiders in this rematch of Super Bowl XV.
Inexplicably, Tony Franklin is overlooked for Super Bowl MVP despite accounting for all of Philadelphia's points with a Super Bowl-record eight field goals. Kickers get no love.
