Re: Greatest Games Replayed
Super Bowl XXV
Buffalo Bills
vs.
New York Giants
Played on January 27, 1991, here is the recap from the original contest...
Scott Norwood's 47-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds sailed wide to the right, and the New York Giants held on to beat the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl's Silver Anniversary game, perhaps the best in the series' history.
What made this game most interesting was the contrast of styles. The Giants, pounding away with their ball-control offense, kept the ball for 40 minutes and 33 seconds. The Bills, on the other hand, used a frenetic No-Huddle attack whose main weapon was running back Thurman Thomas, who ran for 135 yards on 15 carries and caught 5 passes for 55 yards.
Giants coach Bill Parcells kept the Bills' defense on the field by utilizing a running game that featured the game's most valuable player, fullback Ottis Anderson, who gained 102 yards on 21 carries. Much of that came in the second half, as the Giants maintained possession for all but eight minutes.
A recycling success story like no other in Super Bowl history, Anderson had come over from the St. Louis Cardinals in 1986. When starter Joe Morris was injured in 1989, Anderson stepped in. By the time his Super Bowl opportunity arrived, Anderson was 33.
New York's first drive of the third quarter consumed 9 minutes and 29 seconds, a Super Bowl record. Giants quarterback Jeff Hostetler kept the drive alive with three third-down completions, and Anderson gave New York a 17-12 lead with a 1-yard touchdown run. Hostetler finished with 222 yards passing, completing 20 of 32 attempts, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Baker shortly before halftime that narrowed the Bills' lead to 12-10.
Thomas' 31-yard touchdown run to open the fourth quarter put the Bills in front 19-17, but midway through the quarter Matt Bahr's 21-yard field goal gave the Giants a 20-19 lead. In the final minutes, Buffalo drove from its 10 to New York's 29, but Norwood's field-goal try went awry with four seconds left.
Can the Bills erase the bitter taste of defeat from 22 years ago? Let's find out...
On 3rd & 13, James Lofton makes a leaping catch for 42 yards.
On the same drive, Steve Tasker makes a first-down reception on 3rd & 9.
The drive culminates on a 14-yard Jim Kelly to Andre Reed touchdown to give Buffalo a 7-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Tight end Mark Bavaro provides protection for Jeff Hostetler.
Andre Reed makes his third catch of the first half.
A 68-yard TD run by Kenneth Davis gave the Buffalo Bills a 17-0 advantage.
A shot from the blimp of the action on the floor of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Jim Kelly drops back to pass as the Bills cross midfield once more.
James Lofton breaks loose from a Mark Collins tackle to complete a 29-yard score and push the lead to 24-0.
Jeff Hostetler makes an off-balance throw as he feels pressure from Buffalo's defense.
Lawrence Taylor takes down Keith McKellar after the Buffalo Bills' tight end made a first-down reception.
A 38-yard field goal by Scott Norwood, his second of the half, made it 27-0 at the break.
New York's offense generated no first downs and just 23 yards of total offense in the first half.
Jim Kelly, who was 23 of 38 for 302 yards, enjoys plenty of time in the pocket.
Thurman Thomas is stopped by Larry McGrew on 3rd & goal and Scott Norwood came on to boot his third field goal.
Jim Kelly hands off to Thurman Thomas who gained 81 yards on 23 carries.
A 47-yard field goal by Scott Norwood (coincidentally) gave the Buffalo Bills a commanding lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Carl Banks and Eric Dorsey are in the Buffalo backfield almost before Jim Kelly can hand the ball off to Kenneth Davis.
James Lofton's second TD grab, this one from 6 yards out, made it 40-0.
Jeff Hostetler hands off to Ottis Anderson who was held to just 36 yards on 10 carries.
Leon Seals and Cornelius Bennett sandwich Jeff Hostetler.
Lawrence Taylor flattens James Lofton after one of his 7 catches on the afternoon.
Jeff Hostetler was 15 of 30 for 224 yards and was sacked six times.
New York finally gets on the scoreboard with 1:44 remaining in the game on a 16-yard Jeff Hostetler to Howard Cross pass.
A 98-yard garbage-time TD by Mark Ingram on the game's last play was seen by a half-empty Rose Bowl.
The Bills get revenge, and then some, with a shellacking of the New York Giants.

Re: Greatest Games Replayed
1963 NFL Championship Game
New York Giants
at
Chicago Bears
Played on December 29, 1963, here is a recap of the original contest...
Chicago's defense intercepted Y.A. Title 5 times, twice setting up short drives that provided all of the Bears' points, and George Halas won the last NFL title of his coaching career 14-10.
The Giants scored first, an impressive 83-yard drive culminating in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Title to Frank Gifford. A short while later, the Giants had a chance to build their lead after they recovered halfback Willie Galimore's fumble at Chicago's 31. But Del Shofner dropped a pass in the end zone, and New York came away with nothing.
The Bears evened the game after linebacker Larry Morris intercepted a screen pass late in the first quarter and ran 61 yards to New York's 5. Quarterback Billy Wade scored on a sneak from the 2. The Giants regained the lead before the half on a 13-yard field goal by converted punter Don Chandler.
Another errant screen pass proved the Giants' undoing, as defensive end Ed O'Bradovich intercepted and returned the ball to New York's 14. Five plays later, Wade scored his second touchdown for the decisive points.
Let's see if the rematch would be as tight as the original championship game...
The New York Giants' Roosevelt Brown pancakes a Chicago Bear defender.
The play at midfield late in the second quarter with the Giants on top 6-0.
Linemen react to the snap of the ball.
Willie Galimore hits the hole.
Herm Lee blocks.
Y.A. Title drops back with New York holding a 6-3 lead in the third quarter.
Bill Wade takes the snap for the Bears.
Angelo Coia picks up 10 yards on this, his only reception.
Ronnie Bull makes the catch in the flat as New York's Tom Scott closes in.
Chicago's Bo Farrington goes up against double coverage.
A view from the secondary late in the third quarter with the New York Giants still clinging to a 6-3 lead.
Tom Scott goes horizontal to make a tackle on 4th down.
Joe Morrison makes a cut to pick up some of his 41 yards rushing on the day.
Roosevelt Taylor takes down Hugh McElhenny.
The Chicago Bears' offensive line in good pass protection.
New York's Jim Katcavage is named Player of the Game in the waning moments.
Don Chandler's four field goals lifts the New York Giants to victory, and revenge, in this replay of the '63 Championship Game.

Re: Greatest Games Replayed
1973 NFC Championship Game
Minnesota Vikings
at
Dallas Cowboys
Originally played on December 30, 1973, here is a recap from the actual game...
Two key Dallas players -- running back Calvin Hill and defensive tackle Bob Lilly -- couldn't play, and the result was that the Cowboys could neither run effectively nor stop the Vikings from pounding up the middle. Minnesota won easily 27-10.
Minnesota led at the half 10-0, the only touchdown coming when Chuck Foreman ran 5 yards to cap an 86-yard drive, most of which came on runs up the middle. The Cowboys, meanwhile, could get nothing going offensively as Roger Staubach threw 4 interceptions.
In the third quarter, the Cowboys finally scored when Golden Richards returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown. But the Vikings came right back, with Fran Tarkenton finding John Gilliam open behind Mel Renfro for a 54-yard touchdown pass.
In the fourth quarter, 2 interceptions knocked the Cowboys out. After Dallas had narrowed the deficit to 17-10, Bobby Bryant returned one interception 63 yards for a touchdown. Another interception set up a 34-yard field goal by Fred Cox. Walt Garrison concluded a forgettable day for the Cowboys by fumbling the ball away at the Minnesota 2 late in the game.
Let's see if a Dallas squad with a healthy Calvin Hill and Bob Lilly can make a difference in today's rematch...
Dallas comes to the line late in the first quarter with a 3-0 lead following a 47-yard field goal by Toni Fritsch.
A swarm of Minnesota Viking defenders bring down Mike Montgomery after he made a 14-yard catch for a first down.
Robert Newhouse makes it 10-0 in favor of the Dallas Cowboys with a 3-yard run.
Fran Tarkenton is sacked by Larry Cole.
The Vikings get on the board late in the first half on a 21-yard TD pass from Fran Tarkenton to John Gilliam to make it 13-7.
A battle in the trenches early in the second half with the Dallas Cowboys holding a 16-7 lead.
Roger Staubach was 16 of 23 for 178 yards on the afternoon.
Roger Staubach drops back before hitting Drew Pearson for a first down on the Vikings' 10.
The drive was capped on a 1-yard run by Robert Newhouse to push the Dallas lead to 22-7.
A wide shot of Fran Tarkenton scrambling for a first down.
Drew Pearson fires off the line at the snap.
A safety blitz by Cornell Green surprises the Minnesota Vikings blockers and results in a sack of Fran Tarkenton.
Doug Kingswriter bursts downfield on punt coverage.
A field-level shot of fourth-quarter action.
An unlikely Player of the Game in Dallas Cowboys linebacker John Babinecz.
Dallas exacts some sweet revenge from the original 1973 NFC Championship Game as a healthy Calvin Hill rushes for 68 yards and a healthy Bob Lilly records one of 9 Cowboys sacks of Fran Tarkenton.

Re: Greatest Games Replayed
Super Bowl VI
Miami Dolphins
vs.
Dallas Cowboys
Originally played January 16, 1972, at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, here is a recap from the actual Super Bowl...
In retrospect, Super Bowl VI can be seen as a contest between Miami coach Don Shula's overachievers, still a year away from greatness, and Dallas coach Tom Landry's team, which was ready to blossom. The Cowboys had talent, experience, and a new quarterback. Roger Staubach had warmed the bench behind Craig Morton in 1970; in 1971 he took his first steps toward the Hall of Fame by earning the most valuable player award in Super Bowl VI.
In the opening quarter, Chuck Howley, the Super Bowl MVP of the previous year, recovered Dolphin Larry Csonka's fumble at midfield. Csonka did not fumble once during the regular season. Dallas turned it into a 9-yard field goal.
The Cowboys executed a dominating, 76-yard drive in the second quarter to increase their lead to 10-0. Only 1 of the 10 plays in the drive gained fewer than 5 yards. The touchdown came on a 7-yard pass from Staubach to Lance Alworth with 1:15 to go. There still was enough time for Miami to tighten the score by driving 44 yards to Garo Yepremian's 31-yard field goal as the half ended. That also ended Miami's scoring for the day.
The Cowboys wrapped up the game by taking the second-half kickoff and driving 71 yards to another touchdown in 8 plays, 7 of them runs. Duane Thomas, Dallas's leading rusher for the day (95 of the Cowboys' 252 yards on the ground), scored the touchdown on a 3-yard dash.
The Cowboys shut down the Dolphins throughout the rest of the third quarter, allowing a mere 13 yards on 8 plays. Early in the final period, Howley intercepted Bob Griese's pass and returned it 41 yards to the Miami 9-yard line. Two plays gained 2 yards, and then Staubach passed 7 yards to Mike Ditka for Dallas's final touchdown which made the score 24-3.
After the game, Shula said, "My biggest disappointment was that we never challenged. They completely dominated."
Let's see if the Shula and the Miami Dolphins can mount a challenge to Landry and the Dallas Cowboys in today's rematch of Super Bowl VI...
Larry Csonka tries the left side early in the contest but is stonewalled by two Dallas Cowboys defenders. Defense ruled the day early as the teams played to a scoreless first quarter.
Miami's Bob Heinz drops Duane Thomas after a short gain early in the second quarter.
Bob Hayes catches a pass for a first down as Tim Foley closes in for the tackle.
A 39-yard field goal by Mike Clark opened the game's scoring and gave Dallas the first lead.
Paul Warfield makes a diving catch for a first down.
A few plays later, Warfield out jumps Mark Washington to haul in a 23-yard TD that put the Dolphins on top, 7-3.
Roger Staubach calls the play in the huddle.
Miami Dolphins' cornerback Lloyd Mumphord recorded 2 tackles on the day.
Down 7-3, the Dallas Cowboys' offense tries to mount a drive.
Vern Den Herder rushes in to sack Roger Staubach and force a Dallas punt.
Duane Thomas follows his blockers for a first down.
Mike Clark's second field goal of the game narrowed the Miami Dolphins' lead to 7-6.
Miami defensive end Bill Stanfill had five tackles and two sacks.
Bob Heinz and Bill Stanfill take down Roger Staubach for one of Miami's 5 sacks.
Cornerback Tim Foley is shaken up after making a tackle.
Mike Clark boots a 50-yarder early in the fourth quarter to give the Cowboys the lead, 9-7.
The Miami Dolphins' Ray Jones converges on Calvin Hill to make the tackle and force a fourth down.
Mike Clark tacked on his fourth field goal of the game in the final minute.
Needing a touchdown, Bob Griese drops back on 4th & 10 before being sacked to end all hope for Miami.
Shula's Dolphins did provide more of a challenge in the rematch, but their anemic offense proved to be their downfall once again.
As he did in the original matchup, Roger Staubach walks away with the game's MVP award.

As he did in the original matchup, Roger Staubach walks away with the game's MVP award.

Nice work but I don't know how the Steelers keep losing?! I have all the Muscle Mike rosters--What Madden 2004 rosters are you using that have the '05 and '08 Steelers? Can you post those? Thanks!

Sorry, I can't remember where I got those '05 and '08 teams, but I don't think they are compatible with Muscle Mike's teams as the scores seem out of whack when playing with them.
Re: Greatest Games Replayed
1975 NFC Championship Game
Dallas Cowboys
at
Los Angeles Rams
Originally played on January 4, 1976, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, here is a recap of the actual game...
Roger Staubach threw 4 touchdown passes, including 3 to running back Preston Pearson, and the wild-card Cowboys shocked the favored Rams, 37-7.
The Cowboys led from the start. Linebacker D.D. Lewis intercepted the first pass of the day by James Harris, and, on first down, Staubach threw a short pass to Pearson, who dashed 18 yards through the Rams' defenders to score. After Staubach teamed with Golden Richards for a touchdown in the second period, Staubach found Pearson again, this time from 15 yards for a touchdown with 54 seconds remaining in the half to put Dallas ahead 21-0. The Rams' only threats of the first half ended in a missed field-goal attempt and a blocked field-goal try.
The Cowboys continued their relentless pressure in the third quarter, driving 69 yards to a touchdown on their first possession. Staubach hit Pearson 2 yards deep in the backfield, and the running back weaved his way through the Rams for a 19-yard touchdown. A short touchdown run by John Cappelletti in the fourth quarter allowed the Rams to avoid their first home-field shutout in 30 years.
Can Dallas shock the Rams again? Let's find out in this Greatest Games Replay....
Just like in the original contest, Dallas intercepts a pass on the opening drive, but this time it is Benny Barnes who takes it 33 yards to the house for a 7-0 lead.
Dallas wide receiver Drew Pearson makes a cut.
The spooky similarity to the original matchup continues as Roger Staubach sets up and connects with Preston Pearson on a 23-yard TD to make it 14-0.
The Rams get on the board with this 98-yard kick return by Willie McGee.
The Rams' Rob Scribner.
Deja vu again, as Roger Staubach would again connect with Preston Pearson on a 27-yard TD pass to put the Cowboys up 27-7 at the break.
Another hookup that occurred in the original game, Staubach finds Golden Richards who outruns Steve Preece for a 70-yard TD in the third quarter.
Staubach and Richards connect again on a 33-yard score to push the advantage to 41-7.
Ron Jaworski fires a pass over the hands of Harvey Martin.
The third quarter ends with Los Angeles scoring on a 3-yard TD run by Lawrence McCutcheon.
A wide shot of the action in the fourth quarter at the Coliseum.
Lee Roy Jordan flattens Jim Bertelsen after a catch.
Los Angeles drives into Cowboys' territory as they try to make the score respectable.
Jaworski helps up one of his offensive linemen, who had a long day at the office.
There was no doubt as to who the Player of the Game was as Staubach repeated his performance from the original contest with 4 TD passes.
The replay wasn't much different from the original contest as Dallas rolls the Rams again.

1972 AFC Championship Game
Miami Dolphins
at
Pittsburgh Steelers
Originally played on December 31, 1972, at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, here is the recap from the actual game...
Miami quarterback Bob Griese, sidelined since the fifth game of the season with a broken ankle, came off the bench in the second half and directed 2 touchdown drives to lead the Dolphins to a 21-17 victory over the Steelers.
Pittsburgh took the lead in the first quarter. Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw fumbled into the end zone, and the ball was recovered by tackle Gerry Mullins for a touchdown. The hit on Bradshaw knocked him out of the game.
In the second quarter, the Dolphins evened the score after a big special-teams play. With the ball at the Pittsburgh 49, punter Larry Seiple took off on a fake punt, gaining 37 yards to the Pittsburgh 12. Shortly thereafter, Earl Morrall found Larry Csonka with a 9-yard touchdown pass.
A short field goal by Roy Gerela put Pittsburgh ahead in the third quarter, but Griese teamed up with Paul Warfield on a 52-yard pass that set up Jim Kiick's 2-yard touchdown run. Then Griese led a 49-yard drive that culminated in a 3-yard scoring run by Kiick. Bradshaw came back late in the game to throw a touchdown pass, but he was also intercepted twice.
Let's see how the rematch plays out 42 years later...
A muffed punt by the Steelers Glen Edwards led to a 22-yard TD pass from Earl Morrall to Paul Warfield for the game's first score.
A field-level view on a clear 32-degree New Year's Eve day in Pittsburgh.

Miami Dolphins
