San Francisco 49ers
vs.
San Diego Chargers
Originally played on January 29, 1995, at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, here is a recap from the actual Super Bowl XXIX...
Smoke from a pregame fireworks show still hung inside Joe Robbie Stadium on the third play of the game when Jerry Rice cut to the wide-open middle of the San Diego secondary and took a pass from Steve Young for a 44-yard touchdown.
When sportswriters write about "setting the tone," this is what they mean. Young would throw a record 6 touchdown passes, part of a 24-for-36 performance that generated 325 yards and earned him the game's most-valuable-player award. After the initial touchdown to Rice, he threw:
-a 51-yard touchdown pass to running back Ricky Watters with 10:05 left in the first quarter, giving the 49ers a 14-0 lead;
-a 5-yard touchdown pass to fullback William Floyd with 13:02 left in the second quarter, finishing off a 70-yard drive and giving the 49ers a 21-7 lead. That came after the Chargers had gobbled up more than seven minutes with a 13-play, 78-yard drive that ended with Natrone Means's 1-yard touchdown run;
-an 8-yard touchdown pass to Watters with 4:44 left in the second quarter to make it 28-7. The Chargers got a 31-yard field goal from John Carney shortly before halftime, and the 18-point gap at intermission was the closest they would get.
Young added 15- and 7-yard scoring passes to Rice in the second half. In all, the 49ers' excess came to 449 total yards, more than enough against a San Diego defense that centered around all-pro linebacker Junior Seau. The 49ers built their game plan on the understanding that the Chargers' defense allowed Seau to freelance liberally. The 49ers kept one eye on him, and Seau, playing with a neck injury aggravated by a season of painful collisions, made just 2 tackles.
San Diego's final touchdown, a 30-yard pass from Stan Humphries to wide receiver Tony Martin, meant the two teams' total of 75 points surpassed the Super Bowl record of 69 set by Dallas and Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVII.
Let's see if San Diego can turn in a better showing in today's rematch...
A warm, 78-degree night in Miami for this rematch of Super Bowl XIX.
Dennis Gibson and the San Diego defense will look to slow down the high-powered San Francisco 49ers' offense led by Steve Young and Jerry Rice.
The 49ers' defense flexes its muscle early as Rickey Jackson buries Eric Bienemy for a loss on this play.
With Steve Young knocked out of the game early with an injury, San Francisco 49ers' backup Elvis Grbac connected with Jerry Rice on a 38-yard touchdown for the game's first score.
That tally was the only scoring of the opening quarter.
Doug Brien boots a 38-yard field goal to extend the 49ers' lead to 10-0.
Tim Harris rushes around the edge as Rodney Culver goes out for a pass.
Stan Humphries drops back and completes a pass to Tony Martin to move the chains.
Tony Martin hauls in another pass for 9 yards.
Deion Sanders had 3 tackles and 3 pass deflections on the day.
Natrone means business as he busts through the San Francisco defense.
Stan Humphries pitches out to Natrone Means for a 1-yard touchdown run to make the score 10-7.
The San Francisco 49ers' offensive line provides good protection for Elvis Grbac, allowing only one sack.
The Steve Young-less 49ers hold a slim 3-point advantage at the break.
Bryant Young is blocked by San Diego Chargers' center Courtney Hall.
The Chargers drive into 49ers' territory as they look to take the lead late in the third quarter.
But they could only muster a 49-yard John Carney field goal to tie the game at 10-10.
We have a much different game heading into the final quarter of this rematch of Super Bowl XXIX.
San Francisco crosses midfield after San Diego took the lead on a 53-yard John Carney field goal.
After the drive stalled, Doug Brien knotted the score at 13-13 with a 51-yard bomb.
With just over a minute remaining in regulation, John Carney nails a 43-yarder to give San Diego the lead once again.
But Elvis Grbac drove San Francisco into field-goal range, and Doug Brien hit a 53-yarder to tie the game with 0:17 on the clock.
Andre Coleman fumbles the ensuing kickoff, giving San Francisco the ball on the 29-yard line with 0:13 left.
San Francisco immediately brought out Doug Brien to kick the game winner from 46 yards out.
A much more exciting game in this rematch of Super Bowl XXIX, but the 49ers still prevail.
Elvis Grbac comes off the bench for the injured Steve Young and wins MVP honors.
