54. This franchise was never really about difficulty. It's always been about the evolution of the roster. The history. The management. I created this franchise originally as a way to relax, and it just kept going. And people were interested in my history in the same way I am. So I post it.

In fact, if you ask me, the best part of this franchise is the offseason and preseason.

The Cowboys have opened the offseason with a big move. NT Henry Benivieni, along with the Cowboys 7th-round draft pick and the 32nd pick in the 1st round, has been traded to the Chicago Bears for the 21st pick in the 1st round. Because this leaves Dallas with no backups at nose tackle, they are expected to move Travis Higgins to nose.

Today is a somewhat expected day, but a sad one regardless. The longest tenured and arguably greatest quarterback in Cowboys history, Dwight Fraser, has retired. He was signed halfway through the preseason of 2047 as an undrafted rookie. He was the sixth-string quarterback on the team. However, he quickly made an impression and was signed to the practice squad after not making the 53-man roster. It wouldn't be long until he was on the active roster, though, as he was called up after an injury to quarterback Dan Ford. In a game later in the season, both starter Jerry Wright and backup Sammy Holcombe suffered injuries, and Fraser was magnificent. He immediately was promoted to the #2 spot behind Wright for the rest of the season. With the return of Dan Ford and Eldridge Whitfield from injury in 2048, Fraser would spend most of the season on the practice squad. In 2049, Fraser finally made the team out of training camp, and early on, Jerry Wright suffered a season-ending injury, leading to Fraser taking the starting job. Jerry Wright would start the 2050 season, but fans and the team knew the writing was on the wall. Wright was signed by San Francisco before the 2051 season, and Fraser would officially become the starting quarterback. For the next 14 seasons, no one else would sniff the starting job. Fraser set record after record, passing for more than 5000 yards multiple times, even once throwing for more than 6000, and making the Pro Bowl every single season of his starting career other than the last, so long as he was healthy. He won multiple MVP awards, and very well may be the greatest quarterback to ever play football. Over his 18-year career, he accumulated 3,897 completions on 4,705 attempts (82.8%) for 72,662 yards and 1,596 touchdowns to only 70 interceptions. He also had 319 carries for 2,365 yards (7.4 AVG) and 133 rushing touchdowns. Dallas drafted Bam Hall knowing Fraser's time may be limited, but there is no true way to fill a void this massive. Fraser, in our minds, is the greatest Cowboy to ever play, and it's unlikely anyone will take his spot.

Austin Stills was another undrafted gem discovered by Dallas. He joined the team the very same year as Fraser, 2047, and after starting the year on the practice squad along with Fraser, he would be called up before season's end, and never look back. He sat on the bench as a reserve until 2053, when he became the starter at right defensive end after Seth Paris left in free agency. He quickly became one of the best defensive linemen in the league, and was the starter through the 2062 season. What is remarkable about Stills is that his several of his best seasons were some of his last seasons as a starter. He was one of the few players to truly get better with age. Late in 2062, he suffered an injury that ended his season, and while he didn't realize it then, his Cowboys career. Jeremy Drennan was phenomenal while Stills was out, and when 2063 rolled around, the Cowboys announced Drennan as the starter. Stills did not ask to be traded or released, though, and spent the 2063 season as a rotational player coming off the bench. He also played some nose tackle, a new position for him. After 2063, he decided not to retire, and wanted to play one more season, but there was simply no room for him in Dallas. He left for Green Bay in free agency, and had a decent season, though not up to his old production levels. In his Cowboy career, he piled up 420 tackles (72 for a loss), 277 sacks, 5 interceptions, 4 passes defensed, 21 forced fumbles, 5 safeties, and 1 touchdown. He had an additional 6 sacks in Green Bay. Now, in retirement, Stills returns to Dallas, where he will be enshrined forever in the Ring of Honor.

One other notable former Cowboy to retire is FS Mitch Bennett, who was drafted by Dallas in 2049. He joined the Tennessee Titans as a free agent in 2054, and would wind up making the Pro Bowl almost every season over the next decade, as he and former Cowboy QB Eldridge Whitfield helped the Titans to multiple Super Bowls.

QB Darrell Wallace, TE Roscoe Thomas, and CB Mac Norman are three other former Cowboys to announce their retirements.

The Cowboys have a few free agents that they don't want to risk losing, so they took immediate action. They have signed OLB Chris Franks and DE Jeremy Drennan to 6-year contracts, and NT Eddie Hall to a 4-year contract. Additionally, the Cowboys really liked what they saw from RB Lee Griffin, but they aren't completely sure he's the read deal yet. He was hit with the franchise tag, and will play out the 2065 season as the starter. His performance will likely determine if the Cowboys give him a real long term contract or if they put their faith in Josh James.
