Re: Atticus Jenkins: Ace Assistant
I always thought a coach was supposed to build a team up, not let everyone on national television know they suck!

He was known for going on long winded rants about how much his team sucks if they have one bad loss.

Re: Atticus Jenkins: Ace Assistant
Week 16: San Francisco 49ers (7-7) at Seattle Seahawks (8-6)
The 49ers will try to close in on the Seahawks today. Seattle is an average team that relies on its running game while San Francisco relies on the run game and a superb defense.
Golden Tate catches a deep ball that was originally deflected by FS Maurice Alexander. He steps out at the 1 and on the next play, HB Kendall Hunter runs in the TD. Seattle's up 7-0.
LT Lane Johnson decides not to block DE Dion Jordan, giving the Seahawks a free sack.
CB Alex Carter intercepts Brissett's terribly underthrown deep ball. WR Kevin White simply hasn't been given any good throws this season.
Both teams kick FGs and the 49ers trail by 7 with just four minutes left to go in the 2nd quarter.
As the clock hits 0:00, Cam Newton fires a bomb to Mike Wallace, who got a step on CB Taylor Mays. The CPU had completely botched its clock management and should have spiked the ball and then try a field goal, but somehow the terrible AI got the better of me.
The 49ers playoff chances are dissipating fast. If they lose here, it's basically all over.
Yep, that's offensive guard Gabe Jackson beating Haden in coverage. It's been that kind of year for Joe... the Seahawks convert an important 3rd down with that catch.
Usually a backup, ILB Kwon Alexander jumps a route and nabs his first career interception. It won't be enough for the 49ers, as their offensive has been to abysmal to do anything with the turnover.
Brissett throws another terrible pass straight to CB Jalil Brown. It's good to see the underrated CB I acquired in a trade all those years ago is doing well as a starter. For my current 49ers, though... ugh.
This time the Seahawks trounce their rivals, sending the 49ers back to where they belong. San Fran's playoffs chances are at about 1% - they'd need a ton of different scenarios to play out. And since they're going up against the 13-2 Texans... well, you can say the season's basically over.
GAME STATS
PFF RATINGS
Bright Spots
Virtually nothing good happened on offense... TE Aaron Hernandez looks healthy and the Seahawks had a hard time covering him. The 49ers have two solid TEs - maybe they could trade one in the offseason.
C Cameron Erving had another great game. He may end up being the 49ers' only Pro Bowl player this year.
With ILB Gary Guyton going down with a torn tricep, ILBs Shaq Thompson and Kwon Alexander stepped up their play. Both will be starters in the season finale.
Problem Spots
I have no idea what to do at the QB position. All 4 QBs on the team are under contract for next season and we need to add some new bodies. And I'm not convinced it's a problem with sliders - I'm using basically the same sliders as I did when I was playing with the Seahawks - except I cranked up the QB awareness stat. I'm not sure what to do.
WR DeAndre Hopkins had a clunker - he dropped two passes and rarely got open. He was covered up by CB Jalil Brown - a guy used mainly for covering slot receivers. Hopkins has dropped a total of 10 passes this season - I'm not sure if I've ever had a guy drop that many before (usually because I bench them first). Some 49ers fans are starting to doubt Atticus Jenkins' abilities to mentor WRs.
The CBs had a tough time covering Golden Tate, Mike Wallace, and Cordarrelle Patterson. I did build a pretty darn good WR corps in Seattle...
Transactions
Placed ILB Guyton on the IR. His injury will not affect him in 2017, thankfully. Kwon Alexander will start in his place and Elandon Roberts will back him up.
Benched QB Brissett for Bridgewater. I guess I'll give Bridgewater one start in this season. Who knows what could happen.
Signed SS Justin Bethel to a 2 year deal. Bethel has been a solid backup safety for the Texans for the last 4 seasons, but he mysteriously has went unclaimed for the whole 2016 season. He's a Pro Bowl caliber special teamer, and the 49ers could use one to help them cover kick returns better. He will be a favorite to keep his roster spot in 2017 (that's why the 49ers are signing him now - so nobody else takes him over the offseason).

Re: Atticus Jenkins: Ace Assistant
Week 17: San Francisco 49ers (7-8) at Houston Texans (13-2)
Lacy breaks off a big run by giving a CB the stiff arm.
After a surprisingly successful first drive, the 49ers pushed the ball into the endzone by handing it to Lacy. San Fran has an early lead.
Taylor Mays whiffs in coverage and blows a tackle, allowing Justin Blackmon to cruise to the endzone. It's one of only a couple blunders Mays has committed all year round. Houston ties the game up at 7.
ILB Shaq Thompson flies through the O-line and crushes Jay Cutler. Cutler leaves the game with an injury and doesn't return...
San Fran is hanging around with one of the best teams in the NFL. They'll need a big second half in order to defeat Houston.
Bridgewater throws an ill-advised pass to Lacy. OLB Bruce Carter jumps the route and gives Houston great field position.
Andre Johnson wins the ball in a close play that Mays almost broke up. Houston is up by 10.
ILB Shaq Thompson is having a great game - he intercepts QB Zach Mettenberger. The picture is pretty funny because it looks like Dante Fowler is kicking Thompson in the groin.
Thanks to that interception, the 49ers are still holding on.
The Texans take the kickoff back for a TD. CB Jordan Poyer had some really good blocking. This is the 3rd KR TD the 49ers have given up this year. They need to find out how to cover kick returns better.
Well, this season's over. It was a most peculiar year and coming out of 2016 with a 7-9 record. The 49ers have discovered that they have a top 5 defense but a bottom 10 offense. The 49ers will probably try to gear up for a winning season next year because if they don't, Jenkins will likely be fired. I will post a review of the 2016 season a little later.
GAME STATS
PFF RATING
Bright Spots
DeAndre Hopkins rebounded from last week's poor showing and caught 5 passes for 105 yards. He clearly has the potential to be a star WR but he has to focus on limiting the drops and expanding his catch radius. He did a good job going deep and catching intermediate passes.
ILB Shaq Thompson might be the 3 down ILB for the 49ers next year. That's usually Guyton's job - he had another solid season, but he's 31 and probably beginning to decline. Thompson is on the upswing and he could be an all-around middle linebacker. Kwon Alexander looked good, too.
Problem Spots
The 49ers will likely move on from QB Teddy Bridgewater after this season, but they'll likely have to endure a $15-16M penalty. He just doesn't have any awareness or accuracy even though his stats say he should.
The pass rush has been inconsistent this year. OLB Sio Moore has vanished the past few weeks, DE Sharrif Floyd has contributed almost nothing, OLB Kyle Emanuel has been invisible when he's been on the field, and DE Chandler Jones can only do so much. Dante Fowler has been a solid player but not close to as good as he should be as a pass rusher. I'm not sure how to fix this - he simply gets blocked whenever he blitzes.
Next time I'll show how Eddie Lacy ranked among HBs and see if he won the rushing title, the 2016 playoffs, some new advanced stats I've been preparing all season long, and a final evaluation. Then I'll likely take a lengthy break until the 2017 season (probably fittingly taking place in 2017).
Anyways, thank you for reading this! It really means a lot!

49ers 2016 Season Wrap-Up
First off, let's see what happened in the playoffs this year:
Our rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, got beat up by the Packers. The CPU has won the division with the Seahawks in the past two seasons but hasn't gotten the team further into the playoffs. It's also due to the Rams and Cardinals being bad... and I guess we've been pretty bad too.
The 49ers ended up making an impact in the playoffs - the Texans lost their playoff game and really could have used Jay Cutler, of whom was injured in the 49ers game. Mettenberger couldn't lead the Texans past the Broncos.
The Broncos, led by QB Kyle Orton of all people, win the Super Bowl. Nick Foles and the Eagles fell short.
Now, let's take a look back on this past season. Today we'll be focusing on the 49ers Offense.
49ers Offense Grades
QBs
Kellen Moore 649/4/5, 49% (p. yards/TDs/Ints, compl. %) -.9 (PFF Rating)
Jacoby Brissett 1241/6/10, 48% -1.8
Connor Cook 698/5/11, 45% -2.5
Teddy Bridgewater 391/1/4, 40% -1.9
I can't really say much about my QBs that I haven't already said. Having a completion % under 50% is unacceptable, and all four have cleared that. My QBs just have no idea how to throw a pass to an open WR - heck, they can barely tell if anyone's open. This wasn't a problem when I was playing as the Seahawks, so I have to wonder what's going on. Perhaps my coaches' stats need to be raised?
Grades:

HBs
Eddie Lacy 341-1535 (carries/yards) 8 TDs & 1 rec. TD +5.4
Duke Johnson 48-230 1 TD & 1 rec. TD +1.0
Bernard Pierce 20-165 1 TD +.6
Lacy finished in 3rd place as he fell about 150 yards short. It was a fantastic season for him. Atticus Jenkins may not have been able to fix the passing game, but the running game looks like a well-oiled machine. He fumbled the ball away just twice, which is impressive for about 350 touches. He wasn't a factor in the passing game. Johnson looks like a fine backup and so does Pierce. It'll be interesting to see if Pierce wants to return as the 3rd HB option and primary kick returner or if he'll want to find more chances elsewhere.

FBs
Michael Robinson +2.3
Zach Line +1.2
Robinson will be 34 next year and he's nearing the end of the line. He is a fine run blocker, but he doesn't do much else. Line is in his prime and outplayed Robinson in the 2 starts he got. Line is an impending free agent but the 49ers could coax him back by offering him the job as the starting FB.

WRs
Here's some of those advanced stats I talked about earlier. I took the time to record how many targets each WR got this season... and these new stats should shed light on their performances.
Kevin White took a step back from his impressive rookie season. What was disappointing was his inability to get open. You can tell he was rarely open thanks to his tiny 42% catch rate. He still caught a few deep passes and made some plays, but he needs to do better than this. Grade: C
DeAndre Hopkins was supposed to jump-start this offense. Atticus Jenkins, a notorious WR developer, didn't seem to help Hopkins along. He dropped an alarming 9 passes, which was 15.5% of his targets. Both starting WRs need to get their catch % at least over 50%. They could use a better QB, but it wasn't Jacoby Brissett's fault that Hopkins kept dropping his passes. Grade: D+
Sterling Shepard didn't get targeted quite as often as the other WRs, and that's a shame because I noticed him time and time again running wide open. When he did get passed to, he did a great job corralling passes in, catching 55% of them and dropping just 7%. He should build off this solid rookie campaign in 2017. Grade: B+
T. Y. Hilton's time with this team is up - he's shown little to no receiving ability in his 2 years here. Posey could be the benefactor, but that remains to be seen.
TEs
Refer to the chart above to see how the TEs did receiving-wise. On a different note, both were OK blockers.
Aaron Hernandez could have had a much better season if he didn't miss 7 games with his injury. He was the team's best receiver - leading in catch % and drop %. 49ers QBs found more success throwing towards their TEs. Hernandez is an impending free agent... the 49ers probably can't afford to lose him, unless... (Grade: B+)
Troy Niklas might be able to step up in Hernandez's absence. He definitely flashed his abilities this year, nabbing 38 passes and maintaining a role even when Hernandez was healthy. The only problem with Troy was his drops - he lost control of 15.6% of his passes, which was worse than Hopkins' rate. If he can focus on catching, he could definitely start at TE. Grade: B-
O-Line
LT Lane Johnson -.4 (PFF Rating) 4 (Quick Sacks Allowed)
LT Ronnie Stanley -1.2 2 QSA
LG Tony Bergstrom +2.8 3 QSA
C Cameron Erving +4.1 2 QSA
RG Ali Marpet +4.4 2 QSA
RT Anthony Davis +4.5 4 QSA
Quick Sacks Allowed is a new stat I came up with - it works exactly as you'd think. If a sack was recorded quickly (within around 3 seconds) and a lineman was clearly responsible for giving up a sack, they get a QSA.
I was mostly impressed by my O-line, with the only worry being LT. Rookie Ronnie Stanley looked overwhelmed and looked terrible in the 4 starts he got. I do find that most of my LTs end up giving up stupid sacks, so I'm not sure if there's anything I can do. Lane Johnson wasn't good, but he was still better than Stanley. Johnson had a nice run blocking grade, but he's bad at pass blocking.
Grades:
Stanley D-
Johnson C-
Tony Bergstrom wasn't great and definitely had a better year in 2015, but he was a fine starter in 2016. He's very unremarkable - he is solid in both run and pass blocking but didn't make a big impact. Grade: B
Cameron Erving finished in 3rd for PFF Rating along the O-line, which was a surprise, but in a good way. Erving took a tiny step back from a fantastic rookie season last year. But if +4.1 is a step back, I'll take that any day. Erving dominated in pass protection while being good but not great in run blocking. Grade: A-
Ali Marpet was a 4th round rookie who saw the field for 5 games in 2015, averaging about +.15 PFF points a game. The 49ers basically handed him the starting job in August and he ran away with it. Marpet surprised opposing teams with his fantastic run blocking and underrated pass protection. He was a force to be reckoned with and he'll only be getting better. Grade: A-
RT Anthony Davis finished in the red last year and it looked like T Ronnie Stanley might push him to the bench. But that didn't even come close to happening - Davis had a renaissance and finished as the team's best offensive lineman. He was a force in the running game, allowing Lacy to bust through the right side of the line. His pass protection was far better than his lackluster job in 2015. He's locked into the RT job heading into 2017. Grade: A-
Alright, next time I'll cover the defense. Until then, thanks for reading.

This year, Chandler Jones stayed healthy and it made a big difference. Jones was definitely the best player on defensive and not only brought loads of pressure with 11 sacks and 9 more hits, he also was a very good run stopper. On the opposite side of things... Sharrif Floyd didn't do either well. He wasn't quite as bad as last year, but he's been a liability for 2 straight years. Floyd managed just 3 sacks + a QB hit with average run defense. DE Bronson Kaufusi was solid as a 4th round rookie while playing 22% of the snaps. Watt played 24% and wasn't quite as good, but he notched his first career sack. Derrick Lott was great in the preseason but vanished in a part time role, eventually being cut.

Muhammad Wilkerson also stayed healthy this year, but his play was simply average. He wasn't quite as good in the run stopping game as he could have been. Ta'amu was a trainwreck during the first half of the season but got better as the year went on, almost breaking even with his PFF rating. Vincent Valentine got added at the end of the year but played just 10% of the snaps.

The injury bug bit Quan Sturdivant, as he went down after playing just 5 games. He was having a solid season before the injury, providing above average play in run and pass defense. Kyle Emanuel tried to fill in but failed to get a sack or even a QB hit. Sio Moore replaced Emanuel and looked far better with 4 sacks and another 4 QB hits. Moore had seemed to be underutilized by this regime but he's finally earned his playing time. Dante Fowler started all 16 games but wasn't a game changer like he was advertised to be. He collected half of his sacks in one game and 4 of his 7 QB hits in another. He doesn't supply much pass rush, which has been a huge disappointment. However, his talents have been realized in the run game, where his lightning fast speed allows him to topple running backs quickly. This squad likely won't see any turnover going into 2017.

Gary Guyton has been a solid contributor for the last 3 seasons in San Francisco. Originally a UDFA special teamer for the Patriots, Guyton has proven he is capable of much more. He piled up 13 tackles for loss in 15 games. He forced 3 fumbles and was a great pass defender. ILB Shaq Thompson played about 45% of the snaps as the second ILB next to Guyton in base packages. In his limited time he amassed 10 tackles behind the line. He may be ready to push Guyton for more playing time. Kwon Alexander is a fine backup with a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception in limited playing time.

Taylor Mays lead the way again as the former safety covered #1 WRs very well. Haden was expected to be the guy to shadow top receivers but DC Zimmer knew what he was doing. Mays defended 24 passes and picked 2 off. He signed a 4 year extension during the regular season. Joe Haden was a disappointment after signing a big deal after leaving Cleveland. His rating was barely positive as he had too many bad games. He made up for his mistakes by picking off 3 passes (one for a TD) and defending 27 throws. However, when you give up 63 receptions, that's really bad. Thankfully the 49ers had much better depth than they did last year. Signing Chris Greenwood was an absolute steal as he was one of the best nickel CBs in the NFL. He defended 12 passes while giving up 20 receptions (only 1 deep pass). He was a proficient pass rusher too, hitting the QB a remarkable 7 times along with 3 sacks. CB Asher Allen looked good as the dime (4th) CB. He could return in that same role.

One of the reasons why the 49ers had a defensive turnaround in 2016 is because their safety play was so much better. Ha'Sean "Ha-Ha" Clinton Dix was much better in 2016, as his coverage skills were much improved. He still needs to tackle better. Rookie Keanu Neal had his ups and downs but couldn't tackle well enough to stay as the starter. Maurice Alexander stepped in and looked fantastic, picking off 3 interceptions in his 5 starts along with only allowing 25% of deep passes to be caught. Alexander's insertion into the lineup helped make this defense look elite.

K Greg Zuerlein beat both 6th round rookie Fairbairn and incumbent Maher, but it was clear the other two played their way out. Zuerlein was unexpectedly good as the primary kicker, hitting 22/26 field goals with a 54 yarder as the longest one. He was perfect in hitting extra points (30/30), which was something Maher struggled with. The 49ers will almost definitely extend him. I rarely mention P Andy Lee, but that's because he's good and punt returns are a scarcity in Madden 08. His punts averaged 43.1 yards, so he's doing fine.
Our kick return coverage was poor - the 49ers gave up 3 kick return TDs and 2 of them were game winners for the other team. HB Bernard Pierce was a slightly below average kick returner who looked better during the preseason. T. Y. Hilton actually returned a kick for a TD but didn't get the job back (likely due to fumbling problems). Hilton was a poor punt returner, but there are no good punt returners in Madden 08.

OK, I think I'll wrap things up here. I will continue the Atticus Jenkins saga eventually, but as I mentioned earlier, I'll be taking a break. I want to use the real 2017 draft class when we get to that point - but I have yet to make the 2017 draft class. So I'll probably return in 2017 - maybe January or February but I'm not promising anything. Until then I'll be working on the 2016 & 2017 draft classes, and not to mention put up with a ton of homework in college. So once again, thank you for reading!
