Week 3 Highlights

Image

Calvin Hill has had an incredible start to his NFL career, rushing for 138 yards in this game and thus hitting the 125-yard threshold in each of his first 3 games. Here he runs through Washington safety Jim Hill for his lone touchdown of the game, a valuable contribution in the New York Giants' 32-27 victory. Fran Tarkenton has a fine day as well leading the Giants through the air with 314 passing yards and 2 TDs. On the Washington side, A.D. Whitfield rushes for 2 TDs and rookie Joe Owens made a mark with a 42-yard strip-sack-recovery.

Image

Gale Sayers & Obert Logan are jawing at each other after the Cowboys special teams caused Sayers to cough up a kick return that gets recovered by Jim Sniadecki for a touchdown. Sayers later gets individual revenge by a returning a kick successfully for a Bears TD later in the game, but it's not enough to change the tide for an eventual Dalllas 31-22 win at Chicago. The Dallas defense imposes their will with 2 interceptions by Cornell Green and 2 fumble recoveries by Mel Renfro.

Image

Curt Knight boots in his 2nd game-winner of the year as the Orlando Jaguars defeat the Denver Broncos 34-31 in OT. Orlando's Art Graham is the main offensive driver with 8 catches for 158 yards and 2 TDs.

Other Week 3 Results

Kansas City Chiefs 27, Minnesota Vikings 20. Len Dawson throws 3 TD passes, including one to diminutive Noland Smith who got a couple more snaps on account of usual wideouts Frank Pitts & Otis Taylor being unavailable today. The Vikings were driving down in an attempt to tie but Fred Williamson swooped in for the game-sealing interception.

Green Bay Packers 18, San Diego Chargers 3. San Diego's defense should honestly be proud, as while they allowed Green Bay to enter Lambeau's red zone 4 times, in all cases the Pack settled for field goals. But San Diego's offense was unable to take advantage of the opportunities. It hurts that John Hadl got injured after just 2 attempts and backup Billy Stevens flailed around with a 7-23 and 3 interception game.

Oakland Raiders 41, Pittsburgh Steelers 38. Pittsburgh was leading by 14 in the 2nd quarter, but Oakland gradually chipped away at the lead and their go-ahead score was Jim Staggs recovering a fumble forced by Scott Eaton on Pittsburgh's Travis Williams punt return attempt. Larry Brown rushes for 150 yards to Oakland's winning effort, and Pittsburgh's Greg Landry throws 4 TD passes and 332 yards in the eventual loss.

San Francisco 49ers 55, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24. This is the 2nd 50-burger San Fran has dropped in 3 games so far. It's all around domination with four John Brodie TD passes and 179 rushing yards from Ken Willard.

Buffalo Bills 44, New England Patriots 17. The Patriots fall to 0-3 while Buffalo remains undefeated. Butch Byrd intercepts 2 passes and returned one for a touchdown, while Charley Warner recovered a fumble for Buffalo's 2nd defensive touchdown.

Cleveland Browns 24, New Orleans Saints 23. Saints kicker Don Cockroft was in position for the game-winner from 51 yards and shanked it so Cleveland survives Tulane Stadium. Frank Ryan only completes 8 passes but they go for 275 yards and 3 TDs, 2 of them to rookie Gene A. Washington. New Orleans stuck with the run game and Jim Allison's 148 yards contributed to their competitiveness down to the end.

Las Vegas Panthers 37, Cincinnati Bengals 27. Gary Cuozzo is doing his best to make it at least a question when Marlin Briscoe is healthy again, as Cuozzo throws 4 TD passes and no interceptions in this victory in Ohio. That includes rookie tight end Bruce Coslet's first career TD reception. Cincinnati's Dick Hoak records 2 rushing TDs.

New York Jets 27, Miami Dolphins 20. The Jets come back from down 7 entering the 4th quarter to defeat their divisional challenger. Joe Namath also completes just 8 passes but 3 of them are scores.

Houston Oilers 24, Baltimore Colts 19. It's back to the gutter for Johnny Unitas with a 4-INT game, although he does at least get John Mackey a big game of 7 receptions for 131 yards and a TD.

Seattle Seahawks 42, Los Angeles Rams 24. The Rams collapse in the 4th quarter as Seattle scores 29 unanswered points for the victory. Larry Garron & Jim Brown combine for over 200 rushing yards and 2 TDs, and the Seattle defense force Roman Gabriel into 4 interceptions.

Atlanta Falcons 17, Birmingham Ravens 13. The Ravens jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead but Atlanta recovers and finishes winners. Birmingham back Tom Woodeshick rushes for 111 yards and a TD in the loss.

Tennessee Titans 38, St. Louis Cardinals 34. Is it possible that the combination of an improved Bob Griese and an electric rookie O.J. Simpson will have Tennessee turn a corner? Griese throws for 3 TD passes and Simpson rushes for 149 yards as well as a 80-yard receiving TD in the victory. For St. Louis, Jackie Smith has 117 receiving yards and a TD.

Detroit Lions 17, Philadelphia Eagles 14.

Week 4 Highlights

Image

Bobby Bell wins the scramble for a loose ball forced on a Sherrill Headrick sack of John Hadl, setting up the Chiefs to go into halftime with a touchdown lead. Kansas City goes on to hold that lead and finish with a 26-19 victory over the San Diego Chargers. Headrick leads that defense with 2 sacks, including that forced fumble, as well as an interception. The Chiefs offense keeps rolling on with a combined 175 rushing yards from Mike Garrett & Nick Eddy.

Image

The other undefeated team in the AFC is the Jets, as Emerson Boozer powers through Marty Schottenheimer for a game-sealing 56-yard touchdown run in a New York 34-18 win over the Buffalo Bills. With that run, Boozer finishes with 147 yards and 2 TDs. On defense, 5 different Jets get a sack of Jack Kemp.

Image

The Dolphins were hoping to take the game into overtime and have a chance at their first win of the season, but Daryle Lamonica floated a pass as time expired over Dick Westmoreland and into Fred Biletnikoff's arms for the game-winning touchdown in the Orange Bowl. The final score is Oakland Raiders 30, Miami Dolphins 23. That was Biletnikoff's 3rd touchdown of the game and brought him over the 150-yard mark.

Other Week 4 Results

Dallas Cowboys 26, San Francisco 49ers 16. The reigning Super Bowl champions fall to 2-2 and only managed to score a field goal through 3 quarters at the Cotton Bowl. Don Meredith had a fine 340-yard, 2 TD, 0 INT game leading Dallas. San Fran's notable contributor today was Dave Parks who caught both of his team's touchdowns in the 4th quarter in the comeback attempt.

Pittsburgh Steelers 19, Cincinnati Bengals 16. Another winless team defeated in the last second, here by way of a Mike Clark field goal. Marv Woodson picked off Earl Morrall twice leading the way in stifling Cincinnati's offense.

Atlanta Falcons 27, Baltimore Colts 24. Lou Kirouac boots in the game-winner from short range to complete a comeback from a 10-point halftime deficit. Junior Coffey compiled 184 yards from scrimmage and a receiving touchdown. Johnny Unitas was there for building up the 1st half lead but got injured and Gary Wood could not add to the lead during his time under center. Veteran Lenny Lyles returned an interception 30 yards for a Colts TD as well.

Chicago Bears 34, Detroit Lions 20. Mike Bass has 2 interceptions for the Bears defense, returning one of them for a long touchdown. And on offense, Neal Sweeney gets 8 catches for 140 yards and a TD.

Denver Broncos 34, Houston Oilers 27. It's a rare game when Abner Haynes gets bottled up entirely (16 rushes for just 19 yards) and Denver still wins but it happened today thanks to John McCormick's efficient day at QB with 3 TD passes. For Houston, notably they got young fullback Larry Csonka involved in the passing game with 2 receiving touchdowns.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35, Birmingham Ravens 23. In the battle of winless NFC South teams, Tampa is the one with a win on the ledger. Charlie Joiner & Sanders show off their potential as the foundation of a future offensive force as they combine for 14 catches and over 200 receiving yards, while Mel Farr contributes with 135 rushing yards and a TD. Birmingham's Ken Stabler attempted a whopping 56 passes and has some good plays but sooner or later he's going to need to spark some life into this offense to justify his QB of the Future reputation.

Philadelphia Eagles 27, New York Giants 7. Calvin Hill is finally shut down and the Eagles reap the benefits with a win at Yankee Stadium. Aaron Martin takes the league lead with his 3rd and 4th interceptions of the year, and Paul Robinson scores on the ground and on a catch.

Cleveland Browns 30, New England Patriots 26. The Patriots are also still seeking their first win as they allow Cleveland's Frank Ryan to throw for nearly 400 yards and 3 TD passes. New England's Jim Colclough does have a nice day with 120 receiving yards and 2 TDs.

Los Angeles Rams 34, New Orleans Saints 7. The Rams rebound from their collapse last week to a smooth victory over the visiting Saints, as Bucky Pope tears their D up with 156 receiving yards and 2 TDs. As for the Rams defense, Claude Crabb has an interception and a forced fumble/recovery.

Las Vegas Panthers 24, Seattle Seahawks 14. Las Vegas continues to hold down the fort in Marlin Briscoe's absence, primarily by way of John David Crow rushing for 143 yards and 2 TDs.

Minnesota Vikings 41, Green Bay Packers 23. It's a busy day for Fred Cox as he knocks in 7 field goals for Minnesota.

Week 5 Highlights

Image
Image

The marquee matchup coming into today was the Battle of New York teams. The undefeated Jets jumped out to a 24-0 lead but the Giants finally got their gears turning and gradually chipped away at the lead until Jack Gehrke takes in the go-ahead touchdown on just his 2nd catch of the day. The Jets get a chance to respond and make it into the red zone but Dick Lynch jumps in front of Don Maynard to seal the deal with an interception. Giants 46, Jets 43 is the final score.

Some other notable performances from the New York conflict:

Fran Tarkenton threw 5 TD passes
Calvin Hill rebounded back into his Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign with 127 rushing yards, 1 TD and 7 receptions.
Emerson Boozer contributed to the Jets' strong first half with a rushing and a kick return touchdown.
George Sauer caught 2 TD passes, and both he and Maynard went over the 100-yard mark.

Image

In a nighttime matchup at Lambeau, Lee Roy Caffey sets the tone early by perfectly timing an attempted Bears swing pass to the halfback and setting up the Green Bay offense for an early touchdown. The Packers go on to steamroll Chicago 51-27. While Caffey didn't do it himself, Dave Robinson & Willie Wood record defensive touchdowns for the home team. On offense, Elijah Pitts goes over 175 yards from scrimmage with 2 TDs. Notably for the Bears, they were just incapable of getting their firestarter Gale Sayers going, only managing 19 yards on 12 rushes although he did at least get a goal line TD out of it.

Image

It was looking dire for the visiting Saints when they came out of the locker room hoping to come back from a 21-0 halftime deficit and instead had Karl Sweetan get sacked for a safety to make it 23-0. However, Bob Lee was swapped in at quarterback, and his spark to the offense coincided with an absolute debacle of a 2nd half for Seattle's Tom Flores, who tried to come back from a shoulder injury suffered early in the game but instead threw all 4 of his interceptions after halftime. Lee throws the game-tying pass to Tommy Brooker, and gives Seattle enough time to set up Horst Muhlmann for a game-saving 50-yard field goal but it clanks against the goalposts, so New Orleans' Don Cockroft secures a 26-23 win over the Seahawks in OT.

Image

Abner Haynes gestures to the Mile High crowd after scoring his 72nd career rushing touchdown, moving him past Joe Perry for 3rd most all-time and now only trailing Jim Brown and Jim Taylor. The score is vital to the Denver Broncos 27-13 win over the San Diego Chargers. Aside from Haynes the player of the game is surely Willie Brown, who notches 3 interceptions and keeps Lance Alworth touchdown-less for the season (even if he did haul in 14 total receptions on the day).

Other Week 5 Results

Cincinnati Bengals 17, Los Angeles Rams 14 (OT). There were several surprising comebacks, but in terms of results this could be the most surprising as the winless Bengals get on the board with an upset of the high powered Rams. Roman Gabriel is forced into 5 interceptions.

Miami Dolphins 23, Baltimore Colts 20 (OT). The Dolphins have also secured their first win of the year, in spite of Baltimore's Jimmy Orr & Gail Cogdill each crossing the 120-yard mark in receiving.

Atlanta Falcons 33, Tennessee Titans 31. The story here is that Bob Griese was knocked out early and it appears he will be unavailable for the Titans for a long stretch. Jerry Rhome does step in with 3 TD passes to keep Tennessee in position but they can't quite keep up with Atlanta. Tommy Nobis leads the way on defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble he returned 59 yards for a TD.

Kansas City Chiefs 33, Orlando Jaguars 0. The Chiefs roll on with their undefeated start by shutting out the visiting Jags. Bobby Bell records an interception and a sack.

Washington Redskins 30, Detroit Lions 27 (OT). Washington hangs on to the win as Sonny Jurgensen throws 3 TD passes. For Detroit, Pat Studstill catches all 3 of their touchdowns scored in this game.

San Francisco 49ers 26, Las Vegas Panthers 17. A bit close for comfort but San Francisco manages to hold down the fort. Ken Willard continues to be the steady force for the Niners, providing 132 rushing yards and a TD.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30, Houston Oilers 23. The Bucs managed to hold off the Oilers with a 300-yard day from QB Charley Johnson and over 100 yards from scrimmage for Mel Farr.

Pittsburgh Steelers 26, New England Patriots 6. The Pats remain winless as Pittsburgh comes in to Fenway and takes care of business.

Buffalo Bills 23, Dallas Cowboys 18. Ed Podolak rushes for 2 touchdowns as Buffalo defends their home turf.

St. Louis Cardinals 14, Birmingham Ravens 7. 4 field goals by Jim Bakken and a safety by Sam Silas are the Cards' scoring plays today.

Johnny Unitas ties up the game with his 300th career touchdown pass, the first player in NFL history to reach that milestone. However, the Jaguars get the ball first in overtime and successfully march their way to a game-winning field goal, so the final score is Orlando Jaguars 25, Baltimore Colts 22 (OT). The Jaguars have now won 3 games this season and all 3 of them were on Curt Knight game-winning field goals. Orlando's Floyd Little scores once and rushes for 123 yards, and on defense Lionel Aldridge sacks Unitas 3 times. Some other bright spots for the Colts were Fred Dryer, whose 2 sacks and a forced fumble are contributing to a strong DROY campaign, and David Lee who boomed a punt from his own endzone to roll all the way inside the Jaguars' 10 yard line.

Image

Rookie tight end Morris Stroud, all 6 foot 10 inches of him, soars for his 3rd touchdown reception of the night as the Atlanta Falcons defeat the New York Giants 37-30. Stroud got the scores but Vern Burke got the majority of Atlanta's yardage with 147. The Falcons defense saw Ken Reaves force and return a fumble for a TD, Tommy Nobis with multiple sacks, and New York's Calvin Hill limited to 36 rushing yards.

Tom Dempsey's foot is responsible for the Cleveland Browns' 30-27 win over the Chiefs in OT, Kansas City's first loss of the season.

Other Week 6 Results

Washington Redskins 43, Green Bay Packers 26. We expect to have a couple of quarterbacks reach this milestone this year, but Sonny Jurgensen gets his 200th career TD pass today (joining Unitas, Tittle, Blanda and Dawson). Jurgensen relied heavily on tight end Jerry Smith who racked up 15 catches for 145 yards and was the 200th TD. For Green Bay the main receiver is Bob Grim with 10 receptions for 120 yards and 2 TD.

San Francisco 49ers 49, Cincinnati Bengals 31. The 49ers explode for 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to pull away. John Brodie is building a MVP campaign with 400 passing yards, 5 TDs and no interceptions today. Ken Willard also brings another 2 rushing TDs to the effort. Dick Hoak scores twice for Cincinnati.

New Orleans Saints 38, St. Louis Cardinals 17. The Saints carry their positive momentum with another win and a great first start for Bob Lee, who goes 20/27 for 348 yards and 3 TDs with no picks and a key 31-yard rush. Jim Allison rushes for 114 yards and 2 TDs to help Lee out.

Miami Dolphins 28, Pittsburgh Steelers 14. Dick Westmoreland is the star for Miami today, with an interception and a 90-yard strip and fumble recovery TD. Pittsburgh's Danny Abramowicz racks up 188 receiving yards, although teammate Roy Jefferson is the receiver on both of Pitt's touchdowns.

Philadelphia Eagles 28, New York Jets 17. Philly pulls off a road upset on the back of a dominant ground performance from Paul Robinson who totes the rock 35 times for 133 yards. It's an off day for Joe Namath who throws 2 interceptions and fails to throw a TD pass.

Birmingham Ravens 16, Las Vegas Panthers 15. It's by a single point, but the Ravens get on the board with their first win of the season. It's been a rough season for Tom Woodeshick but today was a nice bounceback as he rushes for 144 yards and gets a touchdown.

Dallas Cowboys 40, New England Patriots 21. The Patriots are the last winless team remaining as Don Meredith plays the NE secondary like a fiddle to the tune of 4 TD passes. Mel Renfro picks off John Huarte twice.

San Diego Chargers 48, Oakland Raiders 3. A slaughter in southern California as John Hadl throws 6 TD passes. Uniquely, Hadl completed passes to 6 different receivers and each of them got to score in this game. Speedy Duncan was responsible for both of Daryle Lamonica's interceptions.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 45, Tennessee Titans 17. Not obvious immediately on the statsheet but credit has to be given to Tampa's Dave Whitsell, who deflected 9 passes against just 2 catches allowed, despite not ending up with an interception.

Chicago Bears 33, Minnesota Vikings 23. With this, no one in the NFC North currently has a winning record. Bill Nelsen has had a rough start to his Chicago career but 370 passing yards and 3 TD against the Minnesota defense is a very solid performance. Carl Eller did his best to try disrupting Nelsen with 3 sacks.

Injury Report

Buccaneers: DE Bubba Smith, out for the regular season with a torn pectoral

Panthers: WR Jim "Red" Phillips, out for 4 weeks with a jaw injury

Saints: CB Ed Sharockman, out for the regular season with a dislocated elbow

Steelers: S Clendon Thomas, out for 5 weeks with a hand injury

Trade Deadline

The San Francisco 49ers traded QB George Mira to the Philadelphia Eagles for DE Randy Beisler, a 3rd round pick and a 7th round pick. (This was probably the most notable trade of the deadline, as the NFC East appears to be extra competitive this year and Philadelphia wanted to secure an upgrade at backup QB. Mira has had limited reps with a healthy John Brodie ahead of him, but he's impressed when he's gotten the shot.

The Baltimore Colts traded WR Eppie Barney to the Chicago Bears for a 3rd round pick.

The Chicago Bears traded DB Tony King and a 2nd round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for S George Youngblood and a 4th round pick.

Week 7 Highlights

Image

If there's a MVP to the Browns-Jets game it's certainly Emerson Boozer, who executed a perfect option pass to Don Maynard for the touchdown, on top of the 129 rushing yards and a TD that's his normal fare. However, Boozer couldn't do it alone and Cleveland defeats the New York Jets 23-17. Some Browns to highlight include Mel Tom with 2 sacks, a forced fumble and a recovery, and Frank Ryan who finished with exactly 300 passing yards.

Image

Jurgensen got there last week, and John Brodie's lone touchdown pass of the day, made under pressure to Dave Parks, gets him to 200 for his career. That was the only aerial score New Orleans allowed in a solid day, but alas San Francisco 49ers defeat the Saints 23-9. Ken Willard does his usual yeoman's work of keeping San Fran on time with 90+ rushing yards and a TD.

Image

It's an absolute slaughter in the Coliseum as tight end Billy Masters is wide open to take in his third receiving touchdown of the first half. The Oakland Raiders sail to a 38-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs as Daryle Lamonica nearly hits the 400-yard mark. To add injury to insult, Len Dawson is knocked out of this game hard, and it seems that Kansas City will have to last the rest of this regular season without their steady general at the helm. Don Horn will be taking over going forward and hoping to not squander the 5-0 start the Chiefs managed before this 2-game slide.

Brief real-life aside: John Madden is coaching the Raiders in this simulated 1969 as well, and I couldn't think of a better tribute than a well-rounded game by his Raiders like this. Rest in peace, John, your NBC commentary as well as hearing your voice in these video games have been so influential in me being a football fan in life. Thank you.

Other Week 7 Results

New York Giants 17, Los Angeles Rams 16. The Giants narrowly defend Yankee Stadium by a point, as LA's Bucky Pope & Jack Snow each go over the 100-yard mark but only score once between them. Notably, Jim Katcavage records his 100th career sack (recorded since 1960) in this game, a mark only reached by Deacon Jones, who was watching from the luxury box in this game as he remains in recovery from the season-ending injury suffered in week 1.

Cincinnati Bengals 33, Buffalo Bills 30 (OT). Cinci heads into their bye week with another surprising win over a powerhouse in recent years, although they need the extra period to squeeze this one out. A little under-the-radar but it's been a breakout campaign for Jim Beirne, who racks up 9 catches for 133 yards and a TD for Cincinnati in a relatively normal by his season standards kind of day.

Denver Broncos 38, Seattle Seahawks 25. We're going to be familiar with John Gilliam's name for a while, as he has a monster day in front of the Mile High faithful with 228 receiving yards and all 4 of John McCormick's TD passes. Gilliam overshadows former Bronco Lionel Taylor passing the 100-yard mark and inching closer to maybe getting a piece of the all-time record currently held by recently retired Raymond Berry.

St. Louis Cardinals 30, Atlanta Falcons 23. Curt Gentry & Lonnie Sanders record 2 interceptions each to keep giving their offense good field position, and so St. Louis manages to stay in the hunt despite a 4-INT game from their backup thrown into the fire Al Woodall.

Houston Oilers 41, Orlando Jaguars 24. 19/30 for 348 yards and 3 TDs with no picks is what Oilers brass was hoping out of Craig Morton more consistently. On defense, Miller Farr is all over with a 26-yard pick-six and a strip-recovery. Orlando's Floyd Little is the neglected sparkplug here with over 200 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns.

New England Patriots 39, Miami Dolphins 38. Like the Ravens last week, the Pats get their first win just barely, as John Huarte slings it around for over 400 passing yards and completing passes to 10 different receivers. Miami's Howard Twilley has 2 receiving TDs including one in the 4th quarter that unfortunately was just not enough.

Baltimore Colts 31, Tennessee Titans 19. All of Baltimore's points were scored before halftime and they could sail easy from there. Lenny Lyles & John Griffin both return interceptions for touchdowns, certainly not inspiring any confidence in Jerry Rhome being able to navigate the Griese-less Titans.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23, Detroit Lions 19. The Bucs are back in the playoff discussion with their 4th consecutive win after an 0-3 start.

Dallas Cowboys 24, Minnesota Vikings 12. Dan Reeves of all people is the man to break through a stout Minnesota front 7, with 3 rushing touchdowns today.

Philadelphia Eagles 23, Chicago Bears 20. Shoutout to Nate Ramsey's nice 69-yard pick-six.

Washington Redskins 19, Las Vegas Panthers 14. The Panthers are shut out in the 1st half and unable to make a comeback.
