DE Joey Bosa sacks Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs attempt a game-winning drive with under a minute left to play.

KANSAS CITY, MO - For the second straight week, a tight-knit contest ended with a hard-fought road win for the Houston Oilers (2-1) as they escaped Arrowhead Stadium with a 23-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs (2-1) on Thursday Night Football.

Trialing 17-21 on 4th and 10 with 1:36 left to play, Marcus Mariota launched a prayer 27 yards to the end zone where receiver Keith Kirkwood caught the game-winning score over two defenders.

"Of all the touchdowns I've caught in my career, this is one I'll never forget." said an excited Kirkwood. "Marcus put the ball in the perfect spot, and despite who was covering me, I knew I had to make that grab on 4th down for my team."

A missed extra point kept the Houston lead at 23-21, but Kansas City was unable to get in field goal range and turned the ball over on downs.

“What a win!” exclaimed Oilers head coach Anthony Lynn. “Marcus, our receivers, and the defense came through in the clutch and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Despite an interception that ended Houston’s opening-drive, Mariota had his best outing of the season so far completing 14 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns.

“I’m sure he’ll continue to admit how much he needs to improve, but that was a gutsy performance and it gives us the positive momentum we need heading into our bye week.”

Both of Houston's 4th Down conversions happened during the game-winning drive.

Back-up Justin Jackson rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries after another injury forced Christian McCaffrey out of the game late in the first quarter.

“Team doctors told me it was a bruised sternum and he should be back in time to play the Raiders after the bye week,” Lynn announced.

“Unfortunately, he didn’t have any good news for me regarding Keenan Allen,” Lynn added. “He’ll be out four weeks with a ruptured disk.”

After completing a game-saving catch on 4th and 10 with under two minutes left to play, Allen was escorted to the locker room and didn’t return.

WR Keenan Allen will be out for four weeks.

“I texted him after the game. He was just excited that we pulled off the win,” Mariota stated. “Thankfully we have some talented receivers who make me look good, but Keenan is a special player and his presence in the huddle will be missed these next four weeks.”

In his first losing effort of the season, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes finished with 14 completions 198 yards and three touchdowns, his longest being a 69-yard touchdown bomb to Tyreek Hill (4 RECs for 94 yards) that put Kansas City up 14-10 with 2:33 left in the third quarter.

Houston Oilers (2-1) vs. Oakland Raiders (2-1)

Spoiler:
WILLIAMS HELP OILERS STUN RAIDERS WITH 4TH QUARTER COMEBACK, 14-10

HOUSTON, TX - Mike Williams caught two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to help the Houston Oilers (3-1) seal a come-from-behind win over the Oakland Raiders (2-2) in front of 69,000 fans at Oil Rig Stadium.

It was the third straight contest where the Oilers needed to score late in the fourth quarter to come out victorious.

Trailing 10-7 with 18 seconds left to play and a first down at the goal line, Marcus Mariota was expecting to hand the ball off to Christian McCaffrey.

With McCaffrey getting tackled before he can receive the handoff, Mariota found himself under pressure and had no choice but to chuck the ball into the back of the end zone, where Williams was able to grab the wild pass with one hand and keep both feet inbounds for the game-winning touchdown.

Kennan Allen was cleared to play after a ruptured disk kept him from finishing the previous game (a come-from-behind win at Kansas City), but with a history of multiple injuries throughout his stellar eight-season career, Houston's coaching staff decided that rushing the star receiver back too soon was not a risk this team could afford to take.

“If we were playing this game on Sunday, you might have seen him out there,” head coach Anthony Lynn told reporters who were expecting Allen to return.

“That just meant Mike Williams had to step up and be our number one guy and stepped up he did!”

The former first-round pick racked up seven catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns, including the epic grab that was #1 on the SportsCenter Top 10 plays.

“This was for Kennan man!”, Williams said of his performance and the win. “He’s been looking out for me since I first got in the league, and I knew I couldn’t let him or the team down.”

“Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he’s been making sure I’m prepared for this bigger role in the offense. I can’t wait until he’s back on the field with us, but meanwhile, I’m going to do whatever I can to help us keep this streak going.”

Next week, a new rivalry begins as the Oilers host the Tennessee Titans in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

As we all know, the Titans were known as the Houston Oilers before then-owner Bud Adams moved them to Nashville after the 1996 season, and would eventually change the team mascot in 1999.

"These organizations will always be joined at the hip when it comes to NFL history," owner Ray Brown said. "There's no bad blood on my end. I'm sure the fans will feel a certain way about the organization who took their team away from them, but I'm hoping this game can develop into an interesting but friendly rivalry that both fanbases can enjoy for years to come."
