OILERS TAKE DOWN CHIEFS IN REVENGE GAME
DE Joey Bosa sacks Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs attempt a game-winning drive with under a minute left to play.
KANSAS CITY, MO - For the second straight week, a tight-knit contest ended with a hard-fought road win for the Houston Oilers (2-1) as they escaped Arrowhead Stadium with a 23-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs (2-1) on Thursday Night Football.
Trialing 17-21 on 4th and 10 with 1:36 left to play, Marcus Mariota launched a prayer 27 yards to the end zone where receiver Keith Kirkwood caught the game-winning score over two defenders.
"Of all the touchdowns I've caught in my career, this is one I'll never forget." said an excited Kirkwood. "Marcus put the ball in the perfect spot, and despite who was covering me, I knew I had to make that grab on 4th down for my team."
A missed extra point kept the Houston lead at 23-21, but Kansas City was unable to get in field goal range and turned the ball over on downs.
“What a win!” exclaimed Oilers head coach Anthony Lynn. “Marcus, our receivers, and the defense came through in the clutch and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Despite an interception that ended Houston’s opening-drive, Mariota had his best outing of the season so far completing 14 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
“I’m sure he’ll continue to admit how much he needs to improve, but that was a gutsy performance and it gives us the positive momentum we need heading into our bye week.”
Both of Houston's 4th Down conversions happened during the game-winning drive.
Back-up Justin Jackson rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries after another injury forced Christian McCaffrey out of the game late in the first quarter.
“Team doctors told me it was a bruised sternum and he should be back in time to play the Raiders after the bye week,” Lynn announced.
“Unfortunately, he didn’t have any good news for me regarding Keenan Allen,” Lynn added. “He’ll be out four weeks with a ruptured disk.”
After completing a game-saving catch on 4th and 10 with under two minutes left to play, Allen was escorted to the locker room and didn’t return.
WR Keenan Allen will be out for four weeks.
“I texted him after the game. He was just excited that we pulled off the win,” Mariota stated. “Thankfully we have some talented receivers who make me look good, but Keenan is a special player and his presence in the huddle will be missed these next four weeks.”
In his first losing effort of the season, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes finished with 14 completions 198 yards and three touchdowns, his longest being a 69-yard touchdown bomb to Tyreek Hill (4 RECs for 94 yards) that put Kansas City up 14-10 with 2:33 left in the third quarter.
