Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Week 2 update
This has rarely happened, if ever: the Blizzard started the season 0-2.
Both games were valiantly fought, but there were too many mistakes.
Against the Kingfish, rookie A.Q. Austin threw for 446 yards and 5 TDs in his first career game, but also two costly interceptions to safety and former Yeti William Roberts.
Against the Snowcats' effective defense, Austin racked up the yardage, but his 5th(!) interception of the night was returned by Kevin Ealy on 98 yards for the winning touchdown in overtime.
TE Josh Mager had a great first half with two TD receptions.
Scott Williamson always plays well against his former team. This is one of his 3 sacks.
William Roberts intercepted A.Q. Austin twice.
Mike Nzeocha scored on two very different plays. This 1-yard run and a 100-yard kick return.
Quintin Robinson scores on a 83-yard reception.
Arthur Ginn comes down with this interception.
Keavon Williams returned two kicks to the endzone. On this one, Brian Stewart has a brutal block on Terron Hal.
Tony Gilmore keeps the score close, and Daryl DiMarco brings the game to overtime.
Hau'oli Garcia has a crucial sack on 3rd down in overtime.
The game ended before I could take a screenshot, but Kevin Ealy jumped a pass and returned it for the winning score. Anchorage could have kicked a short field goal, but stupidly decided to go for it on 3rd down. It was a bad execution of a bad call.

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Week 12 update
The last stretch of 3 games showed that the Blizzard can be really good, but it can also be contained.
Against New York, they were able to contain Patrick Jerod-Eddie... at first. Then he broke out of a melee and scored an 85-yard TD.
Then he broke a tackle and hurdled a defender to score again. He would finish with 199 rushing yards and 3 TDs.
The game stayed close, and this interception returned for a TD by Tim McCown was crucial.
Anchorage still had a chance in the dying seconds, and A.Q. Austin connected with Tony Gilmore. But he was tackled in bounds and with no timeouts left, the clock ran out.
The second tilt against the Termites was not as close as the first one.
Cyrus Garland scored on a long catch-and-run, and Austin was intercepted in the endzone, but the rest of the game went smoothly, with 7 different players catching touchdowns for the Blizzard.
The RailRiders' defense mostly dominated the Blizzard's offense, which seemed to run out of creativity. And when they ran a great play, they were stopped more often than not. Austin completed just 14 passes out of 33, with his longest completion traveling 38 yards.
However, Anchorage built a nice lead by forcing two fumbles early. They would force 4 throughout the game.
Aside from this fumble, QB Junior Watt had a great game, throwing for 489 yards and 5 TDs. Charles McCoy caught this 89-yard TD.
Kevin Walker and Laurence Vaccaro also caught long TDs.
But Clinton Ott caught the go-ahead touchdown with 17 seconds left to the game. Watt would try a Hail Mary from midfield, but TE Tre Smith could not haul it in.
Birmingham still stands at 9-2 (one game behind the 10-1 Apocalypse), but will definitely want to avenge this loss. You can bet that they will be working hard on ball security, and if they are successful, they will be even harder to beat.

Game Log Ends
------------------------------------------------------------
The RailRiders' defense mostly dominated the Blizzard's offense, which seemed to run out of creativity.

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Week 15 update
The Blizzard won its past three games and is now 11-3, trailing the Apocalypse (13-1) and RailRiders (12-2). Those 3 teams are likely to have the top three seeds, though there is a slight chance the Ironmen or Kingfish (both 11-5) could sneak on the Blizzard. In the NFC, the competition will likely come from the Defenders (10-4), Wallabies (9-5) or Vortices (9-5).
QB A.Q. Austin broke a toe at the beginning of the game against the Vipers, so Adrian Washington played the bulk of two games. He impressed, to the point some people are wondering if he was dismissed too quickly as potential starter of the team. Against Dallas, he completed his 15 attempts for 343 yards and 6 TDs. Against Tri State, it was slightly harder but he still was 23-of-37 for 386 yards and 7 TDs. No interception over that stretch.
Brandon Dickson returns a punt for a touchdown, thanks to his speed and great blocking downfield by Chris Allen.
He also gets this very contested catch and turns it into a 75-yard touchdown.
Daryl DiMarco stays in bounds for the touchdown.
Louis Miles gets the clutch interception and returns it 99 yards for a score.
Sen'Derrick Hamilton comes down with the interception.
What a game: no incompletion against Dallas.
Kawann Harris scores against the Vipers, then against the Wolves.
J.J. King intercepts former Yeti Jason Peterson, who did not have a good game at all.
Tony Gilmore catches a long pass and makes it to the endzone.

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Season 86 recap
The Blizzard won its last two games to edge the RailRiders for the #2 seed, on account of their last-minute win in week 12.
A.Q. Austin finished his rookie season with nearly 5000 passing yards, and threw 65 TDs to 15 interceptions. He could become special if he learns to limit turnovers, and to control his nerves in big games.
Brandon Dickson showed how he can contribute in many different ways, accounting for 26 TDs. We'll see if he gets more responsibilities next season.
SS Jermey Bradford and CB Darren Hall led the team in interceptions with 7, with Hall also forcing 5 fumbles and recovering one. But it is LB Antonio Kendricks who won DPOY with his 33 sacks and 2 interceptions. In support, Louis Miles had 7 sacks and 2 interceptions in more limited time.
On special teams, Craig Cox was on fire at the beginning, but seemed to fizzle out, leading to Dickson handling return duties for the rest of the year.
Tony Gilmore scores against the Phantoms.
Jon Housler makes a great block to allow Brandon Dickson to take this pass into the endzone.
Dickson has great maneuverability for a player this size. Here, he slaloms between defenders on a punt return TD.
Housler usually shines on special teams. He gets some time on offense and catches this short TD pass.
Jonathan Dorenbos finds a hole and hauls in this touchdown pass.

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Playoffs recap
In the wild card round, the RailRiders routed the Termites 40-3 to set up a rematch against the Blizzard.
Anchorage jumped ahead with a Nick Tapper field goal and a TD pass to Tony Gilmore.
Birmingham had trouble establishing the run game in the first half, so they involved Kevin Walker in the passing game. Score at the half: 16-10 Anchorage.
Teams traded field goals in the 3rd quarter, then Clinton Ott scored on a 14-yard reception. Score after 3 quarters: 26-13 Anchorage.
Charles McCoy catches this 62-yard TD to make it a one possession game.
Flashback to week 12: TE Tre Smith drops a Hail Mary that would have given his team the win. Back to today: TE Tre Smith catches this short pass and turns it into a 44-yard TD to give his team a 1-point lead.
A short TD run by Kevin Walker would give his team an 8-point advantage, but Clinton Ott would score his 2nd TD of the game with 15 seconds to go.
On the 2-point conversion attempt, rookie LB Glenn Rankins tackled Adrian Washington behind the line to preserve his team's lead.
The Blizzard would fail to recover the onside kick.
In another matchup, the Apocalypse outlasted the Ironmen in a low-scoring affair: 6-3. Then in the AFC championship, New York avenged their lone loss by beating the RailRiders 20-13, thanks to a pair of 4-yard TD tosses from Avery Southward (to Matt Gordon and Weston Swoope).
Then in the Super Bowl game held in Oakland, New York avenged their loss to San Juan two years ago by beating the Vortices 14-9. Patrick Jerod-Eddie had two 2-yard TD runs to score the only TDs of the game.
Congratulations, Apocalypse!

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Offseason activity
The Blizzard released HB Jared Williams and traded LB Will Pericak to the Zerstorers for the 4th overall pick.
On top of that pick, Anchorage holds the 27th and 30th pick, as well as two picks at the end of the 2nd round. And a flurry of picks after that.

Re: Anchorage Blizzard in the FI Football League
Draft preview
From last year's results (13-3, divisional round loss), there is not that much to tweak to return to glory. There are some very talented and intriguing players in this year's draft. Here are some players the Blizzard could target.
DT Mike Mallett, Florida
Projected in the top 10
Not very mobile (5.27 dash) but a big presence in the middle (6'6, 337). But do you use a top 10 pick to get a backup for Brenton Wells, who has been playing better and better?
HB Brian Dunbar, Georgia Tech
Projected in the 1st round
He is a little enigmatic because his dash results have been all over the place (4.36 at first, 4.25 lately). Anchorage has been trying to find a Bubba Brady clone ever since they traded him, but they already have a reliable back in Eric Wilson.
WR Matt Higbee, Michigan
Projected in the 2nd round
One of the fastest receivers of the draft, he is a big target (6'4, 248) with great hands. How would he fit in an already deep talented receiving corps?
TE Mike Kearse, Michigan State
Projected in the 2nd round
With a 4.54 dash, 30 bench and 36 Wonderlic, he could be a good receiving threat, as well as a blocker.
CB Khairi Weeden, Houston
Projected in the 2nd round
He is fast (4.21 dash) with decent intelligence (Wonderlic 29) and good tackling (C+) and hands (C+).
CB LeSean Jones, Penn State
Projected in the 2nd round
He is slightly slower (4.30 dash) but more game ready (Wonderlic 38). Could fit at cornerback or free safety.
SS Michael Harkey, West Virginia
Projected in the second round
He is fast for a free safety (4.31 dash) and is a great tackler (B) with good hands (C).
QB Caleb Hyde, Virginia
Projected in the 6th round
A mobile QB (4.68 dash) with good power (A-) and accuracy (B+). But does the team really want to add to the current mix of two great youngsters?
FB Jonathon Bryant, Tulane
He is projected to go undrafted, but you can expect Anchorage to use a late pick to secure him. He could battle for a blocking role on special teams. He has decent speed (4.65 dash), is very game savvy (Wonderlic 40) and is a good blocker (C). There are some questions about his health but it could be a good risk to take. Low risk, high possible reward.
The team would like some linebacker help, but there doesn't seem to be a perfect fit. There is OLB Philly Morse and MLB Laurence Paulsen, but we think they will use their high picks elsewhere and watch if someone interesting remains in the late rounds.
