Week 6 update

The Blizzard had a tough schedule through the first weeks, but made the most of it, going 6-0 in the first stretch of the season.

The retooled offensive line is good, but still gelling together. As a result, Bam Stevens has been great, but not as stellar as last season. To his defense, seasons like the last don't happen frequently.

Greg Bridgewater has been distributing the ball well, with 6 receivers with at least 2 touchdowns, and 3 with at least 6.

Rashaan Harris has taken over the LB/CB spot and has 17 sacks to show for it, but only one turnover (a forced fumble). In support, Marcus Windt has 9 sacks, 2 interceptions and a forced fumble.

Josh Christensen is establishing himself as a versatile player. He has 6 receptions including a TD, as well as a TD on a kick coverage fumble. He is also a great blocker on special teams.

The Termites lost, but WR Drew Locker was unstoppable. He caught 12 passes for 326 yards and 3 TDs in week 6 alone. Watch out for that team if they can get a few more playmakers in the offseason.

Greg Bridgewater had another solid year to earn another MVP award.

Bryce Elliott also had an unreal season, accounting for 56 touchdowns and 6312(!) all-purpose yards, breaking the punt return TD record on the way. As a comparison, Craig Cox's season 85 was almost identical, seeing him score 57 times for 6045 all-purpose yards.

RB Bam Stevens also had another good season, accounting for 40 TDs and 3146 yards from scrimmage.

On defense, Rashaan Harris' first season as LB/CB was strong: he compiled 65 sacks, 2 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery.

Offseason activity

The Blizzard had a busy offseason.

They traded DE Nick Kruger to the rival Termites for the 8th overall pick and CB Kevin Langham, and LB Marcus Windt to the Owls for the 33rd pick.

CB Blair Rainey was traded to the Vipers, along with two 5th-rounders, for a 3rd- and a 4th-round pick.

In restricted free agency, the team sent the 64th pick to the Storm for CB Bobby Bassett.

In regular free agency, they signed veteran blocking FB Dominique Jackson and CB Leonardo Wilkerson.

They also released FB Daryl DiMarco, CB Julian Waddle and K/P Tyler Pullard.

Draft recap

The draft didn't go exactly as expected.

The Bassett signing became crucial when the Anchorage couldn't draft either of the cornerbacks they scouted. They were projected in the first round (not top-10), but went 6th and 7th overall.

But they could select their main target in TE Mo Brown. He was projected in the 3rd round but the Blizzard wanted him so much that they used the 33rd pick to select him.

Brown has the same frame and skill set as legends Hariman Jahoda and Julio Stokes. Again, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Copeland and Ball are more unpolished than expected. So is Urban.

Arden and Sherry add to the pass-rushing room. Not particularly strong, but speedy enough to get to the quarterback.

Chapman adds to a deep receiving room.

Bishop and Dexter will be considered for special teams.

Around the league

After the Blizzard took the last two Super Bowls, we expect a more competitive season. A day before the start of the season, our power rankings look like this:

1. New York Apocalypse
They couldn't quite close it last season, but they have a very complete roster and showed they could slow down the Blizzard.

2. London Defenders
They had an amazing defensive performance in the Super Bowl game (and all season long), and they improved their offense in the offseason. If they can force turnovers and capitalize on them, they will go far.

3. Anchorage Blizzard
They won the Super Bowl but were less convincing than other years. They also lost a few pieces in the offseason.

4. Birmingham RailRiders
On paper, they have the scariest roster of the league. But this was the case the past two seasons and the team underperformed. We are looking forward to being proven wrong.

5. Portland Kingfish
They might challenge the Blizzard to the division title. Rex Hopkins has shined already, and we don't think he is done!

6. Winnipeg Snowcats
Though there are questions about their offensive line, you can never count the Snowcats out.

7. Tyler Termites
On paper, they may not be Super Bowl caliber, but they have come a long way and we expect them to be competitive. If sophomore WR Drew Locker plays against the rest of the league like he plays against the Blizzard, he will do a lot of damage.
