Playoffs recap

After leading his team to a 12-4 record, Rex Hopkins was facing the Blizzard in the divisional round. Nick Kruger and Kareem Cowser made sure to welcome him to the playoffs.



Bryce Elliott avoided Matt Dzubnar to turn this short pass into a 71-yard TD.




The Kingfish's offense could only score 3 times (1 TD, 2 field goals), and though the defense played extremely well, they could not contain Anchorage completely.

In the Super Bowl game held in Detroit, the Blizzard were meeting with two friends-turned-foes: RB Sterling Maclin and WR/RS Craig Cox. The 38-year-old running back had a very different role this year, playing mostly on 1st and 2nd downs and mentoring his heir Derek Hartley. Cox is used as WR3 and can also contribute in the return game.

Spectators who were late to the stadium missed 3 lead changes in the first 2 minutes. After a Rakeem Lewis field goal, Bryce Elliott returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. Then Craig Cox returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown.




Orlando Preston was not used a lot this season, but he caught this important touchdown on 4th down.



Davante Boyd is still highly effective. Here, he notched a sack and a safety.



A missed opportunity: Damarious Washington gets wide open but doesn't turn around in time.



Elliott was mostly contained during the 1st half, partly due to Sean Milton's inspired plays, but he opens the 2nd half with a 56-yard TD reception.



FB Nick McGrath caught a 4-yard TD, then after a special teams fumble (forced by Grover Bulaga and recovered by Giorgio Bell), Sterling Maclin scored from 9 yards away.





Elliott connects with Tony Gilmore on a trick play to give his team the 7-point advantage.




Needing a touchdown in the final minute, Manti France locates Chandler McClellin in the corner of the endzone. Even if he is hit while in the air, he keeps the ball and makes sure to keep both feet in bounds.




Going into overtime, the Vortices win the coin toss but the Blizzard forces the punt. Elliott tries to force a play, and Larry Burrough forces the fumble, which is recovered by Grover Bulaga. Rakeem Lewis kicks his third field goal of the night to win it.



This could have gone either way, but this time, San Juan emerges victorious. Sterling Maclin was named game MVP, with special mentions to Grover Bulaga, Rakeem Lewis, Craig Cox and Chandler McClellin.

A legend retires

Following another Super Bowl conquest, Sterling Maclin finally called it a career. «For real, this time», he said. He retired before, but returned after two years to have a few more title runs with the Vortices.

He played 8 seasons with the Blizzard, rushing 7 times for more than 2000 yards, including 3 of 3000+ yards. He was named league MVP twice.

He played 8 more seasons with the Vortices. With them, he compiled 2000+ yards from scrimmage 7 times.

In total, he piled up more than 2000 yards from scrimmage an impressive 14 times, and was named to the Pro Bowl 12 times.

The Blizzard made several moves to rejuvenate the team. First, they sent star WR Tony Gilmore (and two 6th-round picks) to the RailRiders for the 29th and the 93rd overall picks. The price is a little steep, but some experts believe Gilmore (99/34) could be the missing piece that pushes Birmingham past the opposition. Or not. But you have to admit QB Junior Watt (99/37), or backup Rodney McCoy (99/23), will have an impressive receiving corps including Gilmore, Victor Brown (99/30), Warren Woodson (95/27) and Ronyell Steele (92/24). And also TEs Jeff Fleener (99/33), Mike Newman (99/26) and J.R. Hughes (94/27).

Anchorage also shipped C Tahir Hocker (97/30) to the Wolves and swapped 2nd- and 5th-round picks with them.

Personnel moves

The Blizzard traded FB Akeem Beachum and a 4th-round pick to the Zerstorers for TE Corey Sinclair. They mainly want his blocking, but he can also be an effective playmaker.

With Sheldon Wheaton returning to his natural safety position and Billy Hughes having an impressive sophomore season, the team decided to trade SS Michael Harkey to the Vipers for their 1st-round pick next year.

They also traded TE Orlando Preston to the Steam for a mid-round pick.

Finally, they released DT Josh Tartt.

Getting a roster like this is the sum of two processes. Some of it is the natural progression of the game. A lot of it is me monitoring the players so they progress nicely or don't regress as quickly. I monitor several teams, including also the Apocalypse and Defenders. But right now, the RailRiders seem to be on top, at least on paper.
