The Embarrassing Panthers
--Let's face it. Right now the Panthers are terrible. In fact, I don't believe I have seen so much ineptness through five games in my lifetime. This team is poling at 37% fan support and attendance is sinking fast. Carolina is also on pace to set NFL records in futility. Let's review what is killing this team.
1) Lack of talent at quarterback.
Everyone knows it was a mistake to let Steve Beuerlein go. Sure, he had no mobility whatsoever but he did put up solid numbers even in his worst seasons with the Panthers. It's alright to want to go younger, but Seifert should have known who was behind Beuerlein wasn't going to take the Panthers anywhere. Jeff Lewis (who is no longer here) and Chris Weinke have turned out to not be the answer. And not everything falls on Weinke as I believe he has been set up to fail.
2) There is no running game.
The Panthers are only averaging 80 yards of rushing offense a game. It gets worse if you take out the lone 100 yard rushing day by Richard Hundley against Washington. Our runners cannot break any tackles and the offensive line has not been knocking guys out of the way. As of right now, the Panthers are dead last in pancake blocks.
3) The defense cannot stop the run.
Vince Lombardi said the best play is one the defense knows your calling and can't stop it. The Panthers know going in that teams are going to run all day on them and there is nothing they have been able to do about it. Every single starting rusher the Panthers have faced has gone over 100 yards. The Panthers cannot contain the edge because most of the rushing yardage are coming from tosses and off tackle runs.
4) Lack of pass rush.
The defensive line cannot generate a four man rush to save its life. The Panthers are only averaging a sack a game and their leading sacker is defensive end Jason Peter. The right side of the defensive line (Buckner and Rucker) are really struggling to generate a pass rush.
This week we take on Buffalo in the Woe is Me Bowl. If we cannot beat the Bills, it is going to be a long journey through the rest of this season.

Week Seven Preview
--First one to six wins this week when the lowly Bills come to Charlotte to take on the lowly Panthers. Both teams are coming off of losses and any hopes of the postseason are dwindling more each week.
Rob Johnson is going to lead a Bills offense without the help of starting halfback Sammy Morris and standout wide receiver Eric Moulds. He needs to do better than he did last week in a 20-14 loss to the Jets. Johnson completed only 8/21 passes for just 63 yards.
Expect Johnson to utilize rookie halfback Travis Henry. The Panthers have not had a game without a 100 yard rusher, and Henry looks like he will have a field day with Carolina's defense.

Just wanted to say that I'm enjoying this journal so far. A bit sad that Touchdown Tim was demoted, but it is what it is. I've never had the patience to build an awful franchise into a contender, so kudos on that. I'll be reading!

Thanks for the kind words. This team has got to be the worst team I have ever played with, and I have been playing Madden for over 20 years. Hopefully I can get some upgrades in the offseason. Surprisingly, I am still in the playoff hunt. Thanks for the follow.

Re: 2001 Redux: A Panthers Franchise
Injured Buffalo Still Tops Panthers
——It just doesn't matter who the Panthers play these days. Even with the Bills battling injuries among their receiver corps and in the backfield, the Bills offense had no problems dispatching the Panthers 45-14.
Led by quarterback Rob Johnson, who finished the game with three touchdown throws, the Bills converted 9/16 on third down and easily went down the field for touchdowns.
On the flipside, the Panthers couldn't get out of their own way. Though Chris Weinke looked better today with two touchdown throws, the running game still remains an eyesore. Coach George Seifert inserted Tim Biakabutuka back into the starting lineup but the results were futile. He ended the day with 17 yards on 12 carries.
Weinke is gobbled up by the Bills.
Peerless Price makes a great sideline catch.
Muhammad makes a leaping catch over the Bills secondary.
Donald Hayes snags a pass of his own.

Sorry about the lack of detail in this update and updates in general. Had a family member pass over the holidays and didn't feel like continuing this until now. Thanks for reading. More updates coming.

Re: 2001 Redux: A Panthers Franchise
Week Eight Preview
--The battle for the number one pick in next year's draft heats up this week as the Carolina Panthers take on the Arizona Cardinals.
Both teams have the same problem that contributes to their 1-5 records respectively. They both have abysmal offenses that cannot generate points nor yards.
Quarterback Jake Plummer, though throwing 8 touchdowns and 2 interceptions thus far, has generated little offense through the air and halfback Michael Pittman has generated a little over 500 yards on the ground.
The Panthers are very susceptible to the run and expect Plummer to target his star receiver David Boston early. The Panthers secondary hasn't shown they can stop anyone either.
Where the Cardinals have the advantage in this matchup is their defense, which is ranked 17th overall. They play fast to the ball in the secondary but do have weaknesses along their front seven. The Panthers are going to have to generate a running game if they have any chance of winning.

I'm sorry for your loss.
Those Panthers really do look terrible. Let's see if they'll pick up a win against the equally terrible Cardinals!
