World League 1992

Postby KO'BBF » Sun Jan 21, 2018 5:44 pm

This is another project for Madden that I have been working on for years. I love spring football leagues. I have always enjoyed our sport being played year round. The first of these I really latched on to was the World League of American Football when I was in middle school.

This is a project I put together using various sources from this league that I have in my personal collection. Over the years I have collected every football card made, every team's 1991 media guides, 4 team's 1992 media guides, a few game programs, an Official League Stat and Record book following 1991, and 89 complete games from 1991 and 1992 on dvd. :D we all need a hobby

Using all of that and Custer, Nza's Editor, Madden Amp, and the DB editor, I created this franchise for Madden 07. You can download this franchise, roster, exported teams, and custom art and a bonus Madden 08 roster here ....

Many of the stadiums are courtesy of elguapo's Madden 07 Stadiums, which can be found here ....

The franchise file is ready to play a 16 team league. With some helpful hints http://footballidiot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=19894 and my homemade 16 team schedule generator, each WLAF team will compete amongst themselves while the 16 "other" teams compete against each other.

Most of the artwork is courtesy of the community. The Birmingham Fire logo is incorrect, but it is better than I can do.

sooooo .... let's begin this journal ....

The vision of globalizing American Football has been a mission of many, but Tex Schramm was the first to put his ideas into action. In April 1989 Schramm walked away from the Dallas Cowboys and formed the the nucleus of his proposed expansion of American Football and sold it to the National Football League. In July of 1989 the owners of the NFL teams voted unanimously to pursue the formation of a football league on an international basis when presented the results of a three month study by Schramm and his partners. In October of 1989 the corporation was formed for the World League of American Football after the inaugural board of directors meeting was held in Chicago. Charter members on the board include Dan Rooney from Pittsburgh who was the chairman, Tom Benson from New Orleans, Lamar Hunt from Kansas City, Victor Kiam from New England, Mike Lynn from Minnesota, Norman Braman from Philadelphia, and Al Davis from Los Angeles.

In January of 1990 the league signed a two year deal with ABC Television including a post season package. In March 1990 the USA Cable Network announced a four year deal with the league including guaranteed Saturday night and Monday night contest for live primetime television each week during the regular season. Plus a post season package as well covering the European teams. Adding to the American televised audience will be European games which will be tape delayed and shown during Sundays, the USA Cable Network will also provide the broadcast production for a live Sunday game feed shown on Eurosports. In May 1990 a very first for football was announced when electronic devices would be installed in the Quarterback's helmet for a one-way communication from the sideline. Billy Hicks was named the European director and scouted the cities for prime locations. He had to overcome many challenges when directing the transfer across seas of American Football equipment for the soccer stadiums.

Operation Discovery was announced and former Denver Broncos coach John Ralston was motivated to find athletes from around the world who could play competitive American Football. Ralston travled 6,600 miles to 10 countries in 5 weeks on Operation Discovery recruiting athletes from all backgrounds. [featured in this franchise are Frank Temming, Markku Makinen, Daniel Beun, Rick Koulen, Guillermo Gomez, Xisco Marcos, Mark Pearce, Sergio Vissa, Gerald Olszewski, Stefan Maslo, John Hyllienmark, Olaf Hampel, Andreas Motzkus, Victor Ebubdike, Philip Alexander, Eric Yuma, Steffen Nagurski, Les Jackson, Mike Taylor, Juha Salo, Hans-Ulrich Riecke, Gareth Alyson, Helmut Joder, Nicolay Aslaksen, Erwin Grabisna, Oleg Sapega, Vladmir Georgiev, Peter Busch, Dirk Reesing, Hency Charles, Matti Lindholm, Oliver Erhorn, Stefan Bjorkman, and Richard Colquhoun. Also included are 'National' players who played in the second phase of this league, Pedro Garau, Pau Coll, Cancho Conde, Diego Martos, Andy Merkle, Paul Balfour, John Letham, and the most famous 'National' player of them all, Scott Couper for the Scottish Claymores.]

******That is all real history there ..... the league was announced in the summer of 1989 to take play in the spring of 1991. In hindsight that was probably too soon. The European teams had problems getting the goal posts through customs. The playing fields, practice facilities, and team dormitories were several miles apart from each other. The very first points in league history were scored on a safety and the most called penalty in the span of the league was ineligible man down field. 1992 featured much more manicured football, but the American locals weren't interested and the NFL lost a lot of money in the home states. The European market thrived as planned .... but that is for a different story.

Since the NFL logo is laced throughout the game, let's just say the NFL wanted to brand the product in their image and although the league is officially called the World League of American Football, it is branded with NFL equipment to show their ownership and promotion of this football product to the global audience .... errr somethin' ..... the European teams are promoted as NFL Europe due to the signage throughout the stadiums and on the field. :P

The franchise will be played out human vs. human in my usual manner. I have some willing participants and I play in every game and monitor for league quality control. I really wanted to use the original 11 teams together and I needed the teams to be filled at 55 each to cover any injuries that might come up in the season. Because of these factors I combined the 1991 and 1992 teams together and the players that got "bumped" were added to the expansion teams making the league a 16 team powerhouse. The Sea Devils, Miners [*cough, cough*], Centurions, Claymores, and Admirals are completed with real players from the era. I originally had a great list of free agents but they didn't make it to the franchise. Super Bowl winning coach Doug Pederson is the most famous omission, but the Knights had too many Quarterbacks.
