This Journal will track the progress of a Jacksonville Jaguars Madden 2008 GM franchise starting from the 2017 pre-season period forward (note: "GM franchise" means all games will be played out CPU v. CPU, however, all player moves (sign/release, free agency, trades, drafts) will be made by the General Manager).
The Vitals: This franchise will be using the new FF/FI mod and its default roster, NZA's franchise guide and editor, MaddenAmp to conduct drafts and a few TexMod tpf files. I will be using a custom set of sliders which you can read more on here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=20282
Next Up... the Jaguars will start their pre-season in New England against the Super Bowl champs and then will follow-up with with games against the Bucs, Panthers and Falcons.

Jaguars 1-3 Preseason Leaves a Number of Unanswered Questions

If the pre-season is any indication, it may be another difficult year in J'ville. You do have to hand it to the Jaguars, they did schedule both Super Bowl LI participants, the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons, on their pre-season line-up. Starting with their first game at Gillette Stadium, the Jaguars did play a competitive game with the defending champs, eventually falling 37-34. After the game in Foxborough, the Jaguars returned home and faced Tampa Bay, but were defeated by the Bucs 23-13. Jacksonville's lone victory of the pre-season came at home in the third week against the Carolina Panthers, where HB Chris Ivory posted the game winning score in the 4th quarter. The Jags concluded the pre-season at Atlanta's new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, losing to the Falcons 34-24. Perhaps the most concerning aspect of the pre-season was the number of points allowed by what by all accounts should be a much improved defense. Of course, as coach Marrone pointed out during his last press conference, pre-season records do not usually act as an accurate predictor of regular season success (e.g., the Detroit Lions going 4-0 in the pre-season the same year they went 0-16 in the regular season). A bright spot, however, was the play of rookie HB Leonard Fournette who carried the ball 65 times during the pre-season for 279 yards, an impressive 4.2 YPC average. The Jaguars hope to lean heavily on the rookie running back during the regular season as a means to take the ball out of the hands of mistake prone QB Blake Bortles (who turned the ball over three times during the pre-season). The Jaguars will now look forward to the regular season and their week one match-up in Houston against the Texans. Kick-off Sunday is slated for 1:00 p.m.

The Jags defense, which showed flashes last season, is now in the conversation as one of the league's best thanks to the addition of Campbell, CB A.J. Bouye and SS Barry Church. And, the front office did not stop there, adding DT Marcell Dareus through a trade with the Bills just this past week. "We don't feel like there is any conversation, we are the best, them just facts," stated CB Jalen Ramsey. One knock on this team is that four of their wins have come over teams with losing records and their win over the 3-2 Ravens was not secure until a last second goal line stand on a two point conversion. But, that will change this Sunday with the 4-1 Los Angeles Rams visit Jacksonville; the Rams are coming off a 17-10 victory over Seattle. Kick-off at Everbank Field is slatted for 4:05 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE -- After a blistering 6-0 start, the Jacksonville Jaguars suddenly find themselves in the midst of of an ever concerning slump. A slump that has seen the team lose three of its last four games against less than stellar competition. After an impressive win over the then 4-1 Los Angeles Rams, the Jaguars have dropped games to the Colts and Browns, each who have losing records, and the Chargers. The lone win during the last four games was a home tilt against Cincinnati where the team had to go on a 90 yard touchdown drive in the final two minutes to secure a one point win. The primary contributing factors to the Jaguars slide? An injury to the soul of the team's defense, CB Jalen Ramsey, and the suddenly horrific play of QB Blake Bortles. Without Ramsey, the secondary has been vulnerable to the big play and the defense just does not seem to carry the same swagger. That is understandable as Ramsey has emerged as one of the league's top shutdown corners and a true leader on the team's defense. What is more difficult to understand is the sudden slide of Bortles. After starting the season with an amazing amount of efficiency, seven TDs and zero interceptions through the first five games, Bortles has suddenly morphed into a turnover machine. Over the last five games, Bortles has thrown only four TDs while tossing nine picks, including a four-interception meltdown in Cleveland. At what point does the team turn to back-up Chad Henne if this continues? The one positive the Jaguars have going for them is the anemic play of the rest of the AFC South. Even with their recent downturn, the Jaguars still hold a three game lead atop the division, so there is still some leeway and time to right the ship. And, there is currently no team on the Jaguars' remaining schedule with a winning record. Next up is a trip to the desert to visit the 4-6 Arizona Cardinals.

JACKSONVILLE -- With the AFC South and at least the number 2 seed clinched heading into the final regular season weekend, perhaps the Jaguars looked past Tennessee on Sunday and towards the team's first playoff birth in a decade. There was even talk that the team should sit its starters for the regular season finale to avoid injury and be fully rested for the playoff run. However, coach Doug Marrone did not want to hear any of that talk during his post-game press conference. "We had a chance to secure the No. 1 seed and home-field throughout the AFC playoffs, that should be all the motivation a team needs and, no, I never once thought about resting our starters, that's absurd," said Marrone. In the end, the Jaguars fell two points short in Nashville Sunday, losing 24-22 to the Titans. It is a loss that will sting, but the team will need to move past it quickly and prepare to host the first playoff game in Jacksonville since 1999. "I know it is going to be huge for the city of Jacksonville, our fans have waited a long time for this," said TE Marcedes Lewis. The team heads into the playoffs winning four of their last six games and will now enjoy a bye during the Wild Card round. In the AFC, the Wild Card round will feature the #6 seeded Raiders traveling to Los Angeles to take on the #3 seeded Chargers and the Chiefs (#5 seed) heading to New England to play the Patriots (#4 seed). In the NFC, the #3 Falcons will host the #6 Eagles, while the #4 Packers will host the #5 Lions.

JACKSONVILLE -- With an earlier upset of no. 1 seed Pittsburgh, the Jacksonville Jaguars suddenly found themselves with home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize and after a one point loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, will be watching the rest of the playoffs from their couches. During a back and forth battle that saw both teams turn the ball over multiple times, the Jaguars did find themselves with a five point lead late in the fourth quarter. However, with less than two minutes to play Chargers QB Phillip Rivers led Los Angeles on a scoring drive to take a one point lead after a failed two point conversion attempt. With plenty of time left on the clock the Jaguars only needed to move into field goal range to give former Chargers kicker Josh Lambo an attempt to win the game for Jacksonville, he would never see the field. With :44 seconds left on the clock QB Blake Bortles would throw an ill-advised pass picked off by the Chargers Tre Boston to seal the win for Los Angeles. "It is incredibly frustrating," said Jaguars CB A.J. Bouye, "we had it all set up for a deep run and blew it, it's that simple." Bouye had an outstanding game recording two interceptions but in spite of that performance, the team could not overcome Bortles struggles (13 of 26 for 175 yards and 3 ints). The Jaguars will now head into the off-season with some difficult decisions to make with respect to an under-performing offense that is clearly the team's Achilles heal. In other divisional round playoff action, the Chiefs upset the Steelers, while the Rams defeated the Packers and the Redskins beat the Falcons.
