Week 3
Green Bay Packers (0-2) at Cincinnati Bengals (1-1)
The reigning NFL champion Green Bay Packers are going to do their best to break a winless streak against an expansion team, the Cincinnati Bengals. Coach Paul Brown hasn't beaten the Packers since 1956 (back when Bart Starr was but a rookie), so he'll do his best to muster up what he can with this ragtag group.
Jim Taylor sidesteps a Bengals linebacker to get the ball to the Cincinnati 35-yard line. The Packers are the first to strike with a field goal.
Packers 3, Bengals 0
Dick Haley, a former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback, intercepts a pass and covers the ball up as he gives the Bengals great field position early in the second quarter.
On the ensuing possession, Ray Nitschke wrestles Bernie Casey to the ground before he can get a first down. The Bengals had already made it into enemy territory, and they tie the game up.
Packers 3, Bengals 3
On the next possession, tight end Bob Jencks, rarely used in Washington last year on offense, scores the first touchdown of the game.
Bengals 10, Packers 3
On the other hand, Bart Starr continues to struggle with accuracy in the red zone this season, as he overthrows Boyd Dowler. Matters are further aggravated when Don Chandler misses a 25-yard field goal attempt.
Don Lisbon, a former San Francisco back, catches a ball out of the backfield for a touchdown, extending the lead to 14 at the half.
Bengals 17, Packers 3 at halftime
Bob Kilcullen, drafted from the Chicago Bears, sacks Starr for the second time in the game. Starr continues to be let down by his offensive line this year.
Skipping ahead to the fourth quarter, Dowler makes a key fourth-down catch and injures his shoulder with 5 minutes remaining. Fortunately, he's able to return to the field after missing a couple of plays.
Starr finally has a wide open guy as a Cincinnati defensive back slips, leaving Marv Fleming to make an easy route to the end zone.
Bengals 17, Packers 10
Tom Watkins, another expansion draft pick, breaks off a 90-yard run to push the lead out of reach again for the Pack.
Bengals 24, Packers 10
Green Bay is able to march down the field and construct a drive that culminates in a high touchdown catch by Dowler. Unfortunately, only 1:30 remained on the clock, the onside kick failed, and Cincinnati ran out the clock. The Pack are now suffering their worst-case scenario: 0-3 and the first NFL team to lose to an expansion team this year...

The Vikings fire their opening salvo with a long touchdown pass to Jim "Red" Phillips.
Vikings 7, Ravens 0
Jim Stiger gets the ball across midfield on the Ravens' opening drive.
Bob Timberlake caps the drive off with a shanked field goal attempt. The Ravens offense leaves the field scoreless.
The next Ravens drive is more successful, and is capped with a catch in the endzone by Fred Mazurek, the former Washington Redskin. The game is all tied up early in the second.
Vikings 7, Ravens 7
Fred Cox kicks the ball through after the Vikings enter the red zone again.
Vikings 10, Ravens 7
Minnesota linebacker John Kirby picks off an underthrown ball, giving the Vikings great field position. They get just three points off the turnover.
Vikings 13, Ravens 7
Jim Stiger gets some great blocking on the ensuing kickoff return, and the Vikings are unable to keep him from a return touchdown. The Ravens unexpectedly enter halftime with a slight lead.

A huge blow to the Vikings defense, as defensive end Carl Eller is diagnosed with a broken hand after making a tackle in the third quarter. Team doctors estimate he'll be out for at least seven weeks.
Ron Burton, a running back with the Boston Patriots last season, takes a counter and gets the ball to midfield for the Ravens.
Bob Timberlake has yet to fix his accuracy issues from last season, as he scrapes the goalposts for his second miss of the day. That's six points lost for Baltimore in such a tight game.
On the Ravens' next drive, Jerry Shay, Eller's replacement on the defensive line, recovers a fumble near midfield, giving the Vikings nice field position. Cox makes his third field goal as the third quarter winds down, giving Minnesota the lead back.
Vikings 16, Ravens 14
The Vikings were in scoring position again, but Jim Lindsey fumbles after a catch and the Ravens recover the loose ball. Minnesota is still ahead by just two points.
Vikings safety Karl Kassulke deflects a potential TD pass to Mazurek, but Timberlake actually makes the short kick. Baltimore is ahead once more.
Ravens 17, Vikings 16
The Vikes respond with a deep pass to Paul Flatley, who is tackled inside the 10-yard line.
Fran Tarkenton hurdles over his offensive lineman a little early, but he stumbles into the endzone regardless.
Coach Norm Van Brocklin decides to experiment with the new two-point conversion and make this a seven-point game. With a key block by left tackle Grady Alderman, Tarkenton's scramble on the try leaves his path to the goal line wide open. The Ravens are unable to stop Tarkenton on two consecutive runs.
Vikings 24, Ravens 17
Tight end Hal Bedsole gets behind the defense and takes the ball into enemy territory as the fourth quarter is leaving less and less time for Baltimore to catch up.
Earsell Mackbee tackles Stiger before he can convert the fourth down, and the Ravens are on their heels as the Vikes get the ball with 2:30 on the clock. Mackbee injures his wrist and is out for the game, but he might have saved the game for Minnesota.
With a minute and some seconds remaining, Terry Barr, the long-time Detroit Lion, catches a long pass. This game gets tighter as the seconds tick.
Bedsole demolishes John Kirby as he trucks into the endzone with less than a minute on the clock. Just like that, we're getting our first overtime game of the season.
Vikings 24, Ravens 24 at the end of regulation
Minnesota hasn't been able to get to Steve Tensi all day, but Jim Marshall finally breaks through and hits Tensi from behind, pushing the Ravens way back on their first possession. Baltimore is forced to punt it away.
Minnesota goes three and out, but Bobby Walden executes a beautiful punt, as George Rose downs the ball at the one-yard-line.
The Vikings put eight men in the box, and yet Dan Berry, a rookie back out of the University of California who was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles in training camp, manages to find a hole and has wide open field after taking the ball from the two-yard line...
...and is only chased down by Rose, the guy who downed that punt just two plays ago. The Ravens are just outside of Timberlake's range given his performance today.
And that's the game folks. After two unsuccessful plays, Berry takes the ball again and brings it all the way into the end zone. In just two carries, Berry got almost all of his 98 rushing yards today. The Vikings defense leaves the field stunned. Unbelievable.

Houston Oilers (2-0) at Baltimore Colts (1-1)
Johnny Unitas is greeted by a sacking from Johnny Baker on the first drive of the game. The Oilers are playing in their first divisional game as a true NFL team, and are hoping to leave an impression on the stalwarts of Baltimore.
Ode Burrell finds a hole and crosses midfield on the Oilers' ensuing possession.
Lenny Lyles picks off a pass into the endzone, leaving the game scoreless for now.
George Blanda attempts to scramble for the first down, but is denied just before getting there. He gets up and kicks in the long field goal for Houston, putting them on the board first.
Oilers 3, Colts 0
The Colts' next drive includes a nice pass to Tom Matte, who is found open on a streak out of the backfield.
Defensive end Don Floyd celebrates a drive-ending sack of Unitas later on, and the Colts settle for a tying up of the score early in the second quarter.

Don Shinnick is the recipient of Blanda's second thrown interception, intended for Larry Elkins. The Colts get great field position and take the lead on a field goal.

This time, Elkins does get the ball, and he takes Houston into the Colts' 30-yard-line.
Burrell tries to shake off Jerry Logan, but is taken down before he can reach the first down marker. The Oilers bring the score back to a tie.

Before the end of the second quarter, John Mackey makes a beautiful catch in double coverage. The Colts enter the locker room with a slight lead in a defensive battle.

Charley Hennigan catches the dime from Blanda over Lyles, and the Oilers get close enough for another field goal, tying the game up again in the third.

We skip ahead to the beginning of the fourth, where Donnie Stone successfully squirms out of defensive tackle Fred Miller's clutches and converts a key third down.
Blanda finally gets to celebrate a touchdown today, as he slings one to Elkins. The Oilers finally get a lead again.

Don Shula gets aggressive and calls for his offense to stay on the field on 4th & 2. Raymond Berry dropped two balls today, but he came up clutch here, as he converted and keeps the drive alive for the Baltimore offense.

Matte is stuffed at the goal line on third down by several Oilers defenders. Shula curiously doesn't use a timeout on the three running plays.
Shula goes for it on 4th down again, and Unitas, upon rolling out to his right on a pass play, decided to just do it himself and got across the goal line at the pylon. The game is tied up and the Colts hope to force the Oilers into overtime with about 1:15 remaining.

Blanda apparently doesn't want a fifth quarter, as he throws an impeccable pass to his tight end Bob McLeod. Lyles finds himself in a bad position and can't deflect the ball in time, leaving McLeod to advance a bit across midfield.
Wally Lemm uses his timeouts wisely and sets up Blanda for the game-winner, which he makes from the 33-yard line. The Oilers are now 3-0 overall, while the Colts are struggling to explain an 0-1 start in the NFL South division. It certainly was the right game to have nationally televised.

There is a great story about Don Floyd on NFL Films: Lost Treasures about the AFL. Charlie Jones tells the story that in middle of the game a woman in a tight mini skirt, and large breasts bouncing around, ran on to the field between plays and tried to get the ball from the ref. The ref fought her off and ran away, she took off over to the sideline, puts her arms around Floyd, kisses his cheek I think, and then runs back up to the stands and disappears in the crowd heading to her seat. The whistle blows and the game resumes like nothing happened.

The first play of the game on this dank Midwestern evening is defensive tackle Frank Cornish taking Don Meredith down to the ground. That ends in a three and out for the undefeated Cowboys.
A spry Mike Ditka spin moves past the rookie safety Mel Renfro as he gets the Bears onto the opponent's side of the field.
Gale Sayers was mostly bottled up by Dallas' front seven, but the Kansas Comet does manage to weave his way through to the endzone on the Bears' first offensive possession.

Dan Reeves stiff arms Dick Butkus for the first down.
The second quarter opens with a catch and run by Bob Hayes for the Cowboys' first score of the game.

Lee Roy Jordan makes a nice interception, preventing the Bears from responding.
Hayes gets past Dave Whitsell again and puts the 'Boys in field goal range. Hayes finishes with 180 receiving yards despite the steady drizzle. The Cowboys enter halftime with the momentum regained.
