JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT -- STATE OF THE FRANCHISE 2017
Jacksonville Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell: Thank you all for coming today. As we are on the eve of the Combine and the start of the new league year and, as is tradition, we are here today to give you the State of the Franchise address. I will begin with a recap of the 2016 season from a player evaluation perspective, then will speak briefly on our plans and thoughts for the off-season.
Obviously, we were very pleased with securing our first ever AFC South title. The loss to the Jets in the first round of the playoffs was difficult, but this is a young team and to have that experience will only be helpful going forward. The progress of QB Blake Bortles was, frankly, beyond what we expected. He was able to turn what was his biggest weakness, ball security, into a strength. We were extremely pleased with the fact that he only threw ten interceptions while throwing 29 touchdowns. Clearly we have our franchise QB. We were also pleased with the continued progress of WRs Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson. It was very unfortunate that Hurns went down with his injury late in the season. I believe that did have an impact on our playoff loss to the Jets. The progress of TJ Yeldon at running back is another positive. Although, I will say that we are concerned with the number of carries he has had during his first two seasons. Rookie HB Aaron Green showed some promise but he clearly does not have the size to split carries with TJ. Obviously, Joseph Randle was brought in to take some of the load off TJ, but with his re-entry into the league’s substance abuse protocol, he will not be returning to the team. We graded out the offensive line as improving this past year, but we would still like to see some further improvement and there will be competition for certain positions once we get to training camp.
On defense, we were very happy with the production we got out of first round draft pick DeForest Bucker. Obviously anytime you get a DE that gives you double-digit sacks, you are happy with that production. DeForest has Pro Bowl potential and we are excited to see him progress even further. Having said that, we would like to have seen more pressure on the quarterback from the other positions along the defensive line. That area will be a focus of ours during the off-season. It was great to finally get Dante Fowler on the field. He wound-up being second on the team in tackles and I think we will see even greater progression as he gets further away from his ACL surgery. They say the first year back is the most difficult so I think we will see him really come into his own next season. We saw significant improvement in the secondary. CBs Dwayne Gratz and Aaron Colvin put together solid seasons and helped the team dramatically improve our giveaway/takeaway stat line. I think FS Keanu Neal struggled at times, but that happens with rookies. We expect that he will get better, especially in coverage. Speaking of the rookies on defense, we really like what we saw out of MLB Cassanova Mckinzy, we think he will be our future in the middle of the defense.
With respect to recent player movement, I can announce today that the team has resigned the following players whose contracts were set to expire: WR Allen Hurns, RG Tyler Shatley, RE Tyson Alualu and SS Josh Evans. The team will not be resigning: HB Dri Archer, WR Brian Walters, HB Denard Robinson, TE Nic Jacobs, LG Zane Beadles, RT Jermey Parnell, LE Andre Branch, DT Roy Miller, OLB Dan Skuta, CB Nick Marshall and FS James Sample.
That in a nutshell is the State of the Franchise with respect to player evaluations and development and our plans in the near future. We will now look forward to the start of the league year and the free agency period and the draft later in April.
That’s all for today everyone. Thank you for your time.

Re: GM Franchise -- Jacksonville Jaguars 2016 and beyond...
From ESPN.com:
JACKSONVILLE -- The Jacksonville Jaguars today announced the following free agent signings:
• RE Malik Jackson (94) Age 27 (6’5” 293lbs -- formerly with the Broncos)
• HB Chris Ivory (88) Age 29 (6’0” 222lbs -- formerly with the Jets)
• CB Prince Amukamara (90) Age 28 (6’0” 207lbs -- formerly with the Giants)
Jaguars GM David Caldwell said, "We had some very specific targets this year in free agency and I am happy to report that we were able to sign those targets. As I have mentioned before, we were very pleased with the pass rush production we got out of rookie DE DeForest Buckner, however, he started to see double teams towards the end of the year because we were not getting the same production out of our other positions along the d-line. With the addition of Malik Jackson, we will now have two bookend defensive ends that can pressure the opposing quarterback. We love Malik’s size and motor and think he will vastly improve the defensive line. With the addition of Prince Amukamara we are adding further depth to our DBs. Prince will play on the outside which will allow CB Aaron Colvin to move inside and play slot coverage where he is a more natural fit. Chris Ivory has been signed to give us more flexibility at the running back position. In today’s NFL we are seeing a trend towards having a committee approach at running back. This will help to take some of the load off of TJ Yeldon. We think their skills sets complement one another nicely."

From the Florida Times Union:
Jaguars Land Massive DT Combo at the 2017 NFL Draft
CHICAGO -- Fifteen years ago the Jaguars defense was known for having two immense defensive tackles that made running on Jacksonville a chore and throwing over the top of them even more difficult. Those two DTs, Marcus Stroud and John Henderson, were back to back first round picks in 2001 and 2002. At 6’6” and 6’7” respectively, Stroud and Henderson made for an imposing combination and collectively were voted to the Pro Bowl five times. At the 2017 NFL Draft this week, Jaguars GM David Caldwell selected two defensive tackles that are drawing comparisons to the days when Stroud and Henderson anchored the Jags defense. In the 1st round Caldwell selected 6’7” 350 lbs. DT Kevin Brickley from Purdue University and later in the 6th round took 6’6” 349 lbs. DT Palmer Patterson from Indiana. “Frankly, I don’t think the comparison is fair to Kevin and Palmer. Stroud and Henderson were both first round picks and had very productive careers in the NFL. While they are very similar in size, I think that’s where the comparison ends. Kevin will likely be a starter, but Palmer will be a rotational player at best, at least for now,” said Caldwell. If Brickley starts and Patterson does work his way into the line-up, the Jaguars front four would be extremely imposing with 6’5” Malik Jackson and 6’7” DeForest Buckner at the DE spots and the 6’6” and 6’7” rookies in the middle. “I wouldn’t want to have to throw over that wall,” joked Jaguars QB Blake Bortles. While Brickley and Patterson are intriguing picks, Caldwell’s best pick of the 2017 draft may have come in round 2 when offensive tackle Zack Osborne fell to the Jaguars. Widely considered one of the best left tackles in the draft, it was a surprise to Caldwell that Osborne was still available relatively late in the 2nd round. “Let’s just say we got that draft card in very fast,” said Caldwell. Osborne, who is 6’5” 311 lbs., impressed many with his quick feet and fluid movement during the NFL Combine and his pro day at Vanderbilt. As the team turns its focus towards training camp, current LT Luke Joeckel will now have some serious competition to keep his job at left tackle.
A full listing of the Jaguars 2017 NFL Draft class:
• 1st Rd: DT Kevin Brickley (74) 6’7” 350lbs from Purdue
• 2nd Rd: LT Zack Osborne (80) 6’5” 311lbs from Vanderbilt
• 3rd Rd: SS Terry Perry (73) 6’2” 228lbs from North Carolina

Jaguars Announce New Jersey and Helmet Combinations for 2017
JACKSONVILLE -- The Jaguars today unveiled three new jersey and helmet combinations for their 2017 home uniforms. "We decided at the end of last season to look at making some modifications to the helmet design. And what we came up with was three different versions that will be paired with three different jersey colors for 2017. One change you will see is that the gold and black colors on the helmet are more blended now and that the gold is slightly darker. For the standard black home jersey, the gold will still start on the backside of the helmet and fade to black toward the front. An alternate design has been created where the gold will be on the front of the helmet and fade to black on the backside, that helmet will be paired with the Color Rush jersey that was used in 2015, but for 2017 it will be worn with white pants. The final alternate jersey/helmet combination will be a tribute to the team's original 1995 home uniform and will feature a teal jersey with an all black helmet. We hope that our fans enjoy these new combinations for the team's home games in 2017." said Jaguars President Mark Lamping.
Below are photographs of QB Blake Bortles and OLB Telvin Smith modeling the new jersey/helmet combinations at the Jaguars training camp facilities:

From The Florida-Times Union:
Jaguars Offense Gets Nicked Up During 3-1 Preseason
JACKSONVILLE -- Coming off a 2016 season that saw the Jaguars win their first AFC South Division title, training camp and the preseason are now necessary evils during which the veterans are just hoping to get through injury free. Unfortunately, that did not happen for a number of the team’s veterans this season. At the start of the second preseason game, Jaguars QB Blake Bortles slammed his throwing hand off the helmet of a defender severely bruising his thumb. The set-back kept Bortles out for the remaining preseason games, but the team has announced that he will start the season opener at Tennessee. The WR corps also sustained two injuries. WR Marqise Lee has a strained hamstring that kept him out of two preseason games, he is listed as questionable for the first regular season contest. WR Rashad Greene, who broke his wrist in the first preseason game, will be out six to eight weeks. The dilemma for coach Gus Bradley is that Greene and Lee are the team’s two primary kick returners. If Lee cannot play vs. the Titans, the team will likely look to rookie WR Pete Freeman to temporarily handle the return duties. “Pete has been practicing this week and did handle kick return duties during parts of his college career,” said coach Bradley. As the team looks forward to starting the regular season, Bradley announced his starters at his press conference yesterday. On defense, DE Malik Jackson, CB Prince Amukamara and rookie DT Kevin Brickley will be new to the starting line-up when compared to the starters on defense in 2016. On offense, the only new starter will be rookie LT Zach Osborne who beat out veteran Luke Joeckel. Bradley announced that Joeckel will move over to the right tackle position. Free agent acquisition HB Chris Ivory will play behind starter TJ Yeldon, however, Bradley indicated that Ivory will likely get seven to ten touches per game and will be the team’s short yardage back. The team’s opening regular season game kicks-off this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Nashville.

Re: GM Franchise -- Jacksonville Jaguars 2016 and beyond...
From espn.com:
Jacksonville Sits Atop the AFC South After 4-0 Start
JACKSONVILLE -- The momentum created by the Jaguars first playoff appearance in years at the end of last season has carried over into 2017 as the team has gotten off to a quick 4-0 start. With division wins over the Titans and Texans and further AFC wins over the Dolphins and Patriots, a legitimate discussion can be had concerning whether the Jaguars could be in the running for home field advantage in the AFC playoffs. However, when the subject was brought up with Coach Gus Bradley, he didn't want to consider it. "Really? Four games into the season and you guys are asking me about the playoffs? C'mon guys, you all know it is a long season, there's a long way to go before we will even starting thinking about the playoffs," said Bradley. While the team is off to an undefeated start, there are areas of concern. The biggest area is that the offense is turning the ball over at an alarming rate. During 2016, the Jaguars were one of the top teams in the league in the turnover margin category. Thus far in 2017, they are in the bottom half. Through four games, QB Blake Bortles already has six interceptions, while HB TJ Yeldon has already fumbled four times. "Yes, it's a concern, but we will address it," stated Bortles when asked about the turnovers in a recent interview. On the bright side, the team's defense continues to improve and is on the brink of becoming one of the elite defenses in the NFL. "I think the infusion of talent we have seen on the defensive side of the ball over the last two off-seasons is really starting to pay dividends," said GM David Caldwell. Perhaps the brightest star of that new talent is DE DeForest Buckner. At times this season the 2nd year end out of Oregon has looked un-blockable. Buckner currently leads the NFL with ten sacks. Up next, the Jaguars will put their unbeaten record on the line when they visit the Colts. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

The team unveiled its 2016 AFC South Champions banners during the home-opener
Marquise Lee scores a kick-return TD vs. the Dolphins
HB Chris Ivory rushes for a Jacksonville first down
DE Malik Jackson welcomed Texans QB Brock Osweiler to the AFC South
DE DeForest Bucker adds to his league leading sack total

Re: GM Franchise -- Jacksonville Jaguars 2016 and beyond...
From The Florida-Times Union:
Jaguars Rolling with Four Games to Play
JACKSONVILLE -- Standing at 10-2, the Jaguars possess a one game lead for home-field advantage with four games left to play in the 2017 NFL season. Jacksonville will also enjoy the added bonus of playing those final four games at home at Everbank Field. In the chase for home-field advantage are the 9-3 Pittsburgh Steelers and the 9-3 Buffalo Bills, with the 7-5 Titans, Chiefs and Raiders still holding an outside shot. Heading into those final four home games, the Jaguars boast a perfect 4-0 home record. "It seems like we have been on the road for this entire season, we're looking forward to staying home for the rest of the way," said QB Blake Bortles. Ironically, the Jaguars will have to play both the 9-3 Steelers and 9-3 Bills during the final home stand. "The matter of who gets home-field in the AFC is certainly going to be decided on the field, we're looking forward to the challenge," stated coach Gus Bradley. During the middle stretch of the season, the Jaguars have benefited from some late game luck. In Seattle in week 9, the Seahawks had a chance to win in the last seconds however Seattle WR Jermaine Kearse dropped a wide-open pass in the endzone on 4th down with only :16 to play. In Houston, the Texans were poised to take a one point lead with only 1:29 left to play, but K Nick Novak pushed a 49 yard FG wide right. The Jaguars have also continued to win in spite of Blake Bortles 14 interceptions and TJ Yeldon's league leading seven fumbles. "It is something I have been working on with the running back coaches, I will get it fixed," claimed Yeldon. The Jaguars are coming off a two game west coast swing that saw the team get soundly thumped on Monday Night Football in Los Angeles by the Rams, but then rebound with an impressive 24-14 win in San Diego. The team will start its final four-game home stand against division rival Indianapolis. Kick-off against the Colts is slatted for 1:00 p.m. this Sunday.

Re: GM Franchise -- Jacksonville Jaguars 2016 and beyond...
As the 2017 NFL regular season comes to an end and the playoffs get set to start, we check in on sports talk radio in Jacksonville...
You are listening to 1010XL / 92.5:
Jeff Prosser: Welcome back. You are listening to The Drill on 1010XL/92.5 FM. I am Jeff Prosser, with Dan Hicken and "Balls" Davis. Guys, let's get back to talking Jaguars football, and playoff football. Dan, after last night's pounding of the Titans, the Jaguars wrapped up home-field throughout the AFC playoffs. This is all just a little hard to believe; it doesn't seem like it was that long ago that we went through year after year of double-digit losses. Do you really think this team is the best in the AFC?
Dan Hicken: Well, Jeff, no I don't. I think the defending champs are still the favorites in the AFC. I mean look at what Pittsburgh did to the Jaguars when they came in here during week 15. That game really was not very competitive. It is great that the Jags wrapped up home field last night, but they better hope that someone can knock off the Steelers before they run into them. So, I still think you have to consider Pittsburgh the favorite in the AFC. And the late season injuries to two important starters, RG AJ Cann and OLB Telvin Smith, do not help.
"Balls" Davis: Guys, the phone lines are lit up, you ready to take some calls?
Dan: Sure.
Jeff: God, do we have to?
Balls: First up is Jimmy from the west side. Go ahead Jimmy.
Caller Jimmy: Hey guys. I just want to point out that this team still has not won an NFL playoff game in 10 years. And, I think they were lucky to get to 13 wins this year. They turn the ball over too much and the Steelers showed that this defense still has holes. I mean Big Ben lit them up. And they still have to have that last second loss to the Jets in the 2016 playoffs fresh in their minds. I think if KC or Oakland comes in here for the second round the Jags will be one-and-done again. What y'all think of that?
Jeff: My gosh this is a tough fan base. Dan, didn't this team just beat two playoff teams in its final two games? Those were important games, if they lose either of those they wouldn't have secured home field. And they beat the stinkin' Titans 35-0! I'm gonna go ahead and say it, this team is going to the Super Bowl this year. I don't care about the Steelers game they lost. They rebounded so well after that loss with the close win over the Bills and the white-washing of Tennessee. I think they get by Pittsburgh if they come in here for the AFC Championship Game. Where is the optimism in this fan base? Sheez!
Balls: OK. Let's go to Bill on the south side. Bill, what's up?
Caller Bill: What's up guys? I think the moves and draft picks the front office has made over the last three years have obviously improved this team, but can we go ahead and call Chris Ivory a bust? I mean for the money he got paid, to be a back-up, he just did not pan out this season. And the running game overall is not a strength, how many fumbles by TJ Yeldon will it take before they admit it's a serious problem? I think they need to draft another running back or bring in another through free agency. I'd cut Ivory.
Dan: Well, c'mon Bill. I don't know how you can say it is not a strength. Yeldon did just post his first 1,000 yard season.
Jeff: I don't know Dan. I think Bill has a point. Ivory did not look good. He appears slow out there and just takes forever to hit a hole. Balls, what was Ivory's longest run on the season?
Balls: It was 21 yards.
Jeff: See what I mean? That coupled with a poor yards per carry average is not good. And wasn't he supposed to be the goal line back? I think he only got in the end zone twice all year. And Yeldon, with nine fumbles on the year... that's three more fumbles than he had touchdowns. I think the running game is a problem. Look at that Steelers game... Yeldon had 38 yards on 16 carries and Ivory only had nine yards. You have to be able to run the ball against a team like Pittsburgh and keep their offense off the field.
Balls: Back to the phones, we now have Tony from the Beaches.
Dan: Is this the Big Bo?
Balls: Yes, that's right, our favorite listener and Pride of the Jaguars, Tony Boselli.
Tony Boselli: What's up boys? I just can't sit here and listen to all this negativity from the fan base. I mean, sheez, what do they want? They finally have a team that is winning consistently and has positioned itself to make a run at a Super Bowl and all they want to talk about is problems and how the big bad Steelers are going to come in here and win again. This team has made huge strides this year! Can we talk about things like how DeForest Buckner has turned into a beast? The guy just wrapped up leading the entire league in sacks! And how Blake Bortles continues to progress and is on the verge of being one of the top five QBs in the league. Can we please talk about that? This is probably the second best team, our 14-2 team from ’99 being the best, this franchise has ever had and yet this fan base still complains. I don’t get it. Anyway, I am here to tell you guys that this team is going to get to a Super Bowl. Yeah, maybe not this year, but this core group is going to get there. Mark it down.
Balls: OK, I hate to cut off the Big Bo in mid-rant, but we have to head to commercial guys…
