Wow, nice draft! How big/tall is Koler? And Stokes looks like a serious steal.

Koler is not that big (6'2, 234), but hopefully his speed (97) and catching ability (86) can make him a legitimate deep threat. I seriously lacked that during the past 2 seasons.

I seriously considered drafting Stokes in the second round, but I'm glad I was patient. He is not that big (6'2, 261), but my best TE ever had that same build. Stokes has the ideal speed in a tight end (88) and he's even a little stronger and a better blocker than Jahoda was. I'm trying really hard not to get overly excited yet.

With QB Truman now 31 years old, I started looking at possible replacements, but I didn't want to pay too much, considering Truman could have as many as 6-7 more years, depending on his regression. Jackson was projected in the 2nd-3rd, so when he was still available in the late 4th, I got him. I think I will keep 3 QBs on the roster this year, in case Truman starts to regress way too much in the next years.

Jersey assignments

Newcomers have been assigned their uniform numbers. The tentative depth chart posted last weekend has been updated with them.

QB Marty Jackson #2
QB Andy Sharper #17
HB Bert Kennedy #38
WR Brad Koler #18
WR Ike Campbell #87
TE Julio Stokes #89
G Kurtis Barnes #67
OLB Hugh Edwards #58 (number worn on his previous team)
MLB Victor Sanders #51
MLB Troy Klein #40
FS L.J. Beckett #42
SS Jeremy Jackson #27
SS Cory Hubbard #28
P Kenneth Smith #4

On top of his #38, Bert Kennedy also received a new nickname. His teammates have started calling him K-Bert, a reference to old school video game Q-Bert.

Preseason recap

-Newcomer MLB Victor Sanders impressed everyone with his physicality and speed, playing sideline to sideline. Thomas Hixon's starting job could be in peril.

-With two new QBs to evaluate, Clayton Truman stayed on the sidelines. Obviously, both backups have time to evolve, but Marty Jackson was most impressive, carrying first-team duties. Andy Sharper appears to be a solid backup. They both did well, especially in the preseason finale.

-New weapons will definitely help the passing game. WR Brad Koler showed his effectiveness in the endzone, but did not have many occasions to extend plays. TE Julio Stokes appears to have sure hands and to be able to get extra yardage after the catch. And, after a difficult first season with the team, WR Hariman Littman seems to be able to hang on to the ball. He even extended a short pass into a 78-yard TD in the final preseason game.

-With FB Anthony Wells and TEs Hank Newman and Julio Stokes all grasping tightly their starting spot, can FB/TE/WR Jayson McCoy get more playing time?

-New additions in the secondary didn't have many chances to be spectacular, but they were solid. Both FS L.J. Beckett and SS Marty Jackson made great tackles in the open field.

-MLB Troy Klein and OLB Hugh Edwards barely played, but it is thought that the team wants to look at them further.

-SS Anthony Carufel did well when called upon, but even after a year, the team doesn't seem to know how to utilize him. Could the 6'4 safety be more effective as a linebacker?

Week 4 of preseason.

Personnel moves

To respect the 53-man limit for opening day, the Blizzard began by releasing the following players:

HB Phil Hobbs
WR Ike Campbell
OLB Caz Quick
SS Cory Hubbard

Then they finalized the roster with two trades. They sent TE Hank Newman to the Broncos for a 2nd-round pick. Then sent MLB Thomas Hixon and a 2nd-round pick to the Steelers in exchange for backup CB Caz Gordon (73/22) and a 4th-round pick. The teams also swapped their first-round selection.

I will post the opening day depth chart next weekend, but it should look like this. I am still trying to decide what to do with the FB/TE group, as well as the LOLB spot: Orlando Thomas (like early last season), Charlie Harris (like later in the season), or trying SS Anthony Carufel at that position. Probably a combination of all that. The DB group could also be tweaked.

QB: 6 Clayton Truman (99/31), 2 Marty Jackson (80/21), 17 Andy Sharper (79/23)
HB: 39 Bubba Brady (92/26), 38 Bert Kennedy (72/22)
FB: 33 Anthony Wells (88/24), 13 Jayson McCoy (99/30), 23 Bill Howard (85/24), 48 Andy Morris (85/27)
WR: 18 Brad Koler (84/21), 85 Todd Rogers (82/28), 14 Hariman Littman (77/24), 16 Byron Lucas (76/31)
TE: 89 Julio Stokes (84/23), 83 Julian Andrews (77/23), 80 Irv Thomas (77/25)
LT: 75 J.J. Maddox (96/28)
LG: 79 Chris Winters (92/25), 67 Kurtis Barnes (76/27)
C: 77 Erik Dorsey (94/28), 72 Jameel Nalen (81/23)
RG: 65 J.K. Lewis (97/30), 60 Bobby Taylor (76/26)
RT: 70 Blake Riddle (83/25)

LE: 94 Cody Heatherington (87/24), 95 Travis Rutledge (84/24), 96 Jewell Nelson (79/26)
DT: 93 Mark Phillips (89/25), 97 Ray McAllister (78/26)
RE: 92 Josh Boren (80/24), 91 Gilbert Holt (76/23)
LOLB: 41 Orlando Thomas (89/26), 90 Charlie Harris (83/22), 58 Hugh Edwards (73/25)
MLB: 51 Victor Sanders (82/23), 56 Rashard Tripp (80/25), 50 Chris Donaldson (76/24), 40 Troy Klein (73/22)
ROLB: 52 Ike Manson (91/25)
LB/CB: 98 Ricky Wayne (96/27)
CB: 34 Marc Tanner (92/32), 24 Sidney Kymer (83/29), 32 Lee Hall (75/28), 30 Rodrigo Calderon (74/22), 29 Caz Gordon (73/22)
FS: 45 Quincy Hubbard (86/25), 42 L.J. Beckett (78/22)
SS: 25 Sammy Spikes (84/28), 27 Jeremy Jackson (84/23), 36 Sung Peterson (80/25), 21 Anthony Carufel (76/22)

K: 1 Bubba Howry (84/27)
P: 4 Kenneth Smith (82/22)

You run four or five fullbacks, and I basically just stick a tight end there. Our rosters look very different haha.

That's very true! Proof that there is more than one way to build a dynasty. Aside from our own personal quirks (my obsessions are speed and awareness), there are also the limitations of our settings. For example, your injury sliders are much more realistic, but they change the way you build your roster. You could not get away with only 2 running backs or 2 quarterbacks.

My injury slider is much more boring, all the way down to 33. That way, I do have some injuries, but usually not more than one significant one every season. My thinking is that I like to face healthy opponents, and not tell myself I squeaked by because of a major injury to an opposing player. The other side of the story is that my own team doesn't get many injuries either, which is okay by me. I don't really care about realism, I look for a pleasant experience, and that's the way I like it.

Two running backs, maybe. Two quarterbacks, never. That's a death wish unless you're really close to the end of the season.

I go for a pleasant experience as well, which is why my games are lopsided, but I find roster management realism to be pleasant.
