Draft preview

Two running backs are thought to go in the top 5: Terry Surace from Boston College and Twan Brown out of Texas A&M. But with star Shawn McNamara already in the fold, the Blizzard will look elsewhere with the 1st overall pick.

If they decide to solidy their offensive line, they might go with right tackles A.C. Wilkinson (Liberty) or Oluwasegun Carroll (Washington). If they trade down, they could also draft LT Dave Rolle, also out of Washington.

Matt Corrales is a speedy tight end from USC who is projected in the 2nd or 3rd round. Would make an interesting battle with current Yetis Marco Frazier and Oliver Drennan to become Hariman Jahoda's successor.

At wide receiver, the Blizzard had a great season from James Bowman. Rodney Lott could be emerging this season, and Ike Marshall is a great 2nd-string wideout. But Anchorage will surely give a great look at Sheldon Stone out of Alabama. A 6'6 receiver who had a 4.26 dash and the best Wonderlic result from his position group.

The team's front seven is one of the best of the league. OLB Lake Turner (Oregon) is projected in the first round and is sure to turn heads, but Anchorage will probably be looking for depth or special teamers at that position. Several middle linebackers are also generating a buzz, like J.K. Carrier (also from Oregon), who could even go in the top 5.

FS Tra Hunt from Texas Tech has elite speed and is projected in the late first round, though many see him much higher. He ran a 4.26 dash, benched 30 and had a Wonderlic of 41. The Blizzard, following the trade of DeShawn Kelly, is comfortable with Avery Snell as a starter, but Hunt could be too difficult to pass up.

Stars from now and then

As all 32 NFL teams are working on their draft strategy and either reloading or rebuilding, we would like to ask you this question. If you had to build a team around one Blizzard player (past or present), who would it be? To help, we have tried to compile a list of the best players by position. Following your feedback, we would like to make a top-10 (or 15 or 20) of the best players to ever suit up for the Blizzard.

QB: Josh Bruce is by far the best quarterback to ever play the game. In the older universe, Jim Engram was the first to throw for 70 TDs in one season.

Image

RB: Though Adrian Jones and Stephen Cottrell both won an MVP and rushed at least twice for 2000 yards, we have to go with an old-schooler. FB Ike Kent, who revolutionized his position and created a play style that would last several decades.

Image

WR: In older times, B.J. Reyes practically invented the role of a wide receiver who can do everything, including returning kicks, rushing and even the occasional throw. But we think Rashaan McLean brought this style to the next level.

Image

TE: The team has had many great tight ends, but none was as great as Hariman Jahoda.

Image

O-line: Our first reflex was that LT/RG Austin Jackson was the best o-lineman of all time, but while digging through stats, we realized how effective Ricardo Jones was, without being flashy. We would also like to include pioneers of the early days in the conversation: LT Curtis Hewitt and RG Amos Nelson.

Image

Image

D-line: DEs Kris Jackson, Marquise Glaser and Kareem Cain, as well as DT Ralph Rivers, were all amazing, but none made an impact as great as DE Dave Heatherington. His golden era was short (4 years), but he could not be stopped, even having a 3-year span where he recorded a sack in every single game.

Image

LB: Cornelius Glenn created the hybrid LB/CB position (for lack of a better term): a linebacker who can rush or drop into coverage. He was the first to record 20 sacks and 6 interceptions in one season. Since then, LB Dusty Caldwell has improved on these numbers, even becoming the only defensive-minded player to be named MVP (it helped that he also caught 10 TD passes).

Image

DB: Again, the team had a lot of great defensive backs. We will go with the recent duo of Antwaan Harper and Jerry Jansen, though we cannot decide who was the best. Harper played more physically (and spent a lot of time on special teams as well), while Jansen preferred to stay in coverage. At safety, we will have to go with classic Jeremiah Burns, though Meir Lester (and others) gave him a run for his money.

Image

Image

K/P: So many great names, including current kicker Jeffrey Harper, as well as many who had both roles, like Pat McAfee or Lee Mack. K Adam Vinatieri and Raven Brandon also come to mind.

KR/PR: The team has always prided itself on its special teams, and had many amazing returners. Although we think none was as devastating as Ryan Billups, who returned 29 punts (8 in one season) during his career.

I actually managed to remember a few of those players. Billups and Jahoda most notably. Remind me to keep a closer eye on your roster from now on to look out for current and future greats.

Man I still remember the OGS of the team.

Odrick, Dee Payton, A.C Langford.

Crazy how many players have outdone them now, but shows how good the Blizzard draft haha

Draft recap

With the buzz surrounding Sheldon Stone in the days leading to the draft (some people think he is the most electric player to enter the draft in a long time), and LT Mac Tucker becoming the top lineman on most draft boards, the Blizzard changed its strategy and still got its potential starting right tackle at the 9th spot.

Blizzard's haul:

1. WR Sheldon Stone (83/21), Alabama
9. RT Oluwasegun Carroll (84/22), Washington
36. FS/SS Tra Hunt (83/23), Texas Tech
133. CB Jaime Martin (71/23), Wisconsin
149. MLB Ed Fulton (71/23), Nevada
164. FB Ralph Smith (71/23), Southern Miss

There is some concern over Stone's hands, but that can be taught. Instincts and explosiveness mostly cannot.

Though it was not thought out like that, the Blizzard has the perfect coaching team to develop its top 2 picks. Head coach Austin Jackson will have a few blocking tips to give to Carroll, while OC Shelton Radetsky should be able to teach Stone how to hang on to the ball.

Meanwhile, DC Isaac George will continue to work with LB Jamel Watson so his success continues.

Best players and individual seasons in franchise history
First version - open to discussion

I am trying to compile and rank the best players and best individual seasons in franchise history. This includes all 31 seasons of the current universe, as well as the almost-30 seasons of the All-Stars league (the previous universe). It is harder to dig for stats in the previous universe, which was played on Madden07, so classic players are sadly underrepresented. I'll have to look on my old laptop to see if 07 is still installed.

Let me know what you think. Feel free to disagree, remove items, reorder. Here are the preliminary lists:

TOP PLAYERS

1. QB Josh Bruce
2. TE Hariman Jahoda
3. DE Dave Heatherington
4. LB Cornelius Glenn
5. QB Jim Engram
6. WR Rashaan McLean
7. FB Ike Kent
8. LT Ricardo Jones
9. CB Antwaan Harper
10. CB Jerry Jansen
11. FS Jeremiah Burns
12. LB Dusty Caldwell
13. RG Austin Jackson
14. WR B.J. Reyes

For further discussion, my top-3 is pretty much a lock, as well as QB Josh Bruce being #1. Still, here are the points (for and against) I was making for each of the three being the top player. I have been convinced to keep Bruce #1, mainly due to the fact that QB is the most pivotal position.

JOSH BRUCE, QB

FOR: Best Blizzard QB ever, no question asked. Beat Jim Engram’s record of 70 TD passes several times. Nine-time MVP.

AGAINST: The team had other great QBs, and the margin may not be as wide as for the two other candidates.

HARIMAN JAHODA, TE

FOR: Lasted very long at a very high level. Could turn almost every high-percentage pass into a home run. Reached 3000 yards twice.

AGAINST: Only one MVP and two OPOY awards, though 10+ Pro Bowls. That said, tight ends are not well accounted for in MVP voting.

DAVE HEATHERINGTON, DE

FOR: No one tallied as many sacks in such a short period. Between 60 and 78 sacks a year in that time frame.

AGAINST: His golden age lasted only 4 years. Though he was almost unstoppable during that time.

Season 32 recap

The Blizzard finished 16-0 again, but it wasn't without adversity. Their week 2 tilt against the Steelers finished 56-53 on a pass from Lucius Stolte to Sheldon Stone with 13 seconds left in the game. Their matchup against the Grudlies, as well as both of the Snow Cats games, were also close.

HB Shawn McNamara shattered the rushing record to win the MVP award. He finished with 3133 yards and 30 TDs.

LB Jamel Watson had 85 tackles, 40 sacks, 5 interceptions, 4 FFs, 1 FR and 5 safeties to take home the DPOY award. LB Craig Hayden was also in the running with his 74 tackles, 28 sacks, 8 interceptions, 5 FFs, 1 FR, 3 safeties and 2 defensive TDs.

WR Sheldon Stone was unanimously voted the best offensive rookie with his 92 receptions for 2268 yards and 25 TDs. He added 8 TDs on kick returns and 3 on punt returns.

Fullbacks are not utilized as much as they once were, but Corey Jackson had a great season: 30 rushes for 142 yards and a TD, as well as 34 receptions for 329 yards and 11 TDs. He also had 68 pancakes, as well as a kickoff return for a TD on an onside kick.

Rookie RT Oluwasegun Carroll struggled early on (mainly because Blizzard QBs like to roll right) but he finished strong with 89 pancakes and 8 sacks allowed.

All these great numbers, but it will be for nothing if the team doesn't go all the way.
