Playoffs recap

After annihilating the Crawlers behind the performance of Sheldon Stone (2 TDs) and Corey Jackson (1 rushing TD, 2 receiving TDs) on offense, and Jamel Watson on defense (2 sacks, 2 interceptions), the Blizzard was facing the Jaguars in the AFC championship game.

The Jags kept it close early on, but Anchorage slowly separated themselves. Corey Jackson had another great performance, with one more rushing TD and two more TD catches.

Image

The Jags reintroduced their Sacksonville nickname from the late 2010s, and rightfully so. Sadly, it was not enough to contain the Blizzard.

Image

In the Super Bowl game, the Blizzard were facing the Saints once again. Though Anchorage was technically the host, the Saints had their local crowd cheering for them, as the game was at the New Orleans Superdome.

That didn't stop the Blizzard from striking early and often. Sheldon Stone returned the opening kickoff on 100 yards for the TD, then Corey Jackson caught a 6-yard TD pass.

The Blizzard regained possession, and Lucius Stolte connected with Stone for the 80-yard TD.

Image

TE Victor Taylor had a great game, catching 9 passes for 112 yards and 2 TDs.

Image

Has Ben Brown improved his hands overnight? After getting only 1 interception all season long, he had two in the playoffs, including this pick-six.

Image

But the game MVP was Sheldon Stone, who finished his amazing season with another amazing performance: 8 receptions for 258 yards and 2 TDs, plus 259 kick return yards with 2 more touchdowns. Final score: Saints 27, Blizzard 50.

Congratulations, Blizzard!

Offseason activity

Anchorage seemed anxious to regroup and renew their roster, as they made various roster moves.

The most drastic is that they shipped their starting QB Lucius Stolte to the Dolphins for the 5th and 9th overall picks. Though he did not specifically had a no-movement clause, he had submitted a list of teams he would like to play for. Miami was a good spot because he will now team up with former 10th overall pick speedster WR Leslie Thomas and a trio of reliable TEs.

With HB Shawn McNamara starting to slow down, he was sent to the Argonauts for a 2nd-round pick. He may not be as productive as a few years ago, but even at his worst, he is still better than a lot of runners. For Anchorage, this means they will have a brand new QB/RB duo, though we are unsure if they will go with last year's 3rd overall pick Bernie Serra, or if they will draft a new running back.

CB Markus Hartley was traded to the Cowboys for their 2nd-round pick. Rumor has it that he might team up in the backfield with one of the younger, faster cornerbacks, possibly Sergio Odom.

Restricted free agency saw the team add a FB in Frank Middleton, formerly of the Patriots. This cost only a 6th-round pick.

A minor trade saw Anchorage acquire OLB Colby Payton for a 5th-round pick.

The team also released a flurry of players, so the depth chart currently currently looks like this:

QB:
HB: 34 Bernie Serra (82/22), 28 Jimmy Pittman (78/23)
FB: 41 Corey Jackson (99/30), 27 Frank Middleton (89/24), 46 Deion Norris (88/33), 48 William Green (81/27), 45 Rick Clemons (71/23)

I am back home from the first part of my summer vacation, so I am finally taking the time to reply properly.

Nope. The plan was to draft the QB of the future with one of my picks in rounds 1 or 2. A quality backup can usually be found in post-draft free agency. It is indeed a little scary since a bad pick could mean a very miserable year through the air, but I'm willing to risk it.

As you probably noticed, I like to clean slate every few years and keep the team young and fresh. Although, reading some of the journals here (including yours and RevanFan's) has taught me how to hold on a little longer to valuable players. I used to think 30 was getting old for all positions, but some positions can definitely play a lot longer than that.

I am now going to write an update and post it soon. Stay tuned!

Draft recap

The Blizzard drafted and kept 11 rookies on the roster. Some picks were not as polished as the team hoped, and the 5th overall pick might have been used in a better way, but there is no disastrous pick (unless we get them on the field and they can't keep up).

5. CB Eugene Kocian (77/21), Washington
16. QB Clayton Truman (77/22), Michigan
32. OLB Lamarr Pritchett (77/22), Marshall
45. HB D'Wayne Pratt (88/21), New Mexico
48. WR Jayson McCoy (82/21), Auburn
55. CB Brady Diamond (76/23), North Carolina
90. TE Chykie Jackson (76/21), Colorado State
98. C Craig James (77/21), Western Carolina
133. MLB Erick Alliman (72/23), Nebraska
152. RT Keyon Tatum (72/21), Northern Arizona
203. FB Jermaine Lucas (73/23), Ohio State

Additional notes:

-Both new CBs will also be tried at safety.

-Clayton Truman is actually the QB the team targeted. They expected his throwing mechanics to be more polished but they are willing to work with him.

-D'Wayne Pratt will battle Bernie Serra in camp for the starting job.

-Jayson McCoy is not the typical kind of receiver Anchorage usually goes for. He does not have top speed (SPD 88), but he has great hands (CTH 84) and he's also a good blocker (RBK 64).

-Despite being picked in the late 5th round, the team is excited about Keyon Tatum and he has a shot at being the backup at both tackle positions.

Post-draft free agency

As usual, the Blizzard didn't make any splash. They rounded out their roster by re-hiring backup QB Dave Holliday (77/27), and signing WR Ivan Shephard (69/22) and K Carl Plummer (87/23).

Next update will include preseason findings and opening day depth chart.

Preseason notes

Game 1: Blizzard 45, Buccaneers 16

-Anchorage's first possession was bad. Two ineffective runs by Bernie Serra, then Clayton Truman's first pass to Jayson McCoy was intercepted.

-Truman would then put together an okay performance, nothing stellar: 4-of-9 for 90 yards and 2 TDs. Backup QB Dave Holliday was 4-of-7 for 97 yards and a TD.

-McCoy's lack of speed makes it hard to create separation. He caught 2 passes for 77 yards and a TD on the same drive, then was held to nothing the rest of the game.

-Serra finished with 127 rushing yards and a 4th-quarter touchdown, while D'Wayne Pratt rushed for 68 yards, 2 TDs and a fumble.

-Keyon Tatum played at LT the entire second half and compiled 4 pancakes. He will start next week at RT.

-Eugene Kocian had a strong game, with 4 tackles and an interception, while Brady Diamond had 3 tackles. Ben Brown had 3 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.

Game 2: Wasps 12, Blizzard 38

-Truman recovered from an endzone interception on the first drive, finishing 8-of-10 for 205 yards and 3 TDs.

-On the very next play following the endzone interception, Eric Baker had an interception of his own to give the ball back to his offense.

-Tatum played the entire game (1st half at RT, 2nd at LT) and compiled 4 pancakes.

-During the second half, defensive coaches experimented with personnel. Kocian was used both as extra safety and left cornerback, toggling between the two seamlessly. Ben Brown also saw time at safety and cornerback.

-D'Wayne Pratt compiled 70 yards in the first half, while Serra had 191 yards and a TD (plus a punt return TD!).

Game 3: Eagles 2, Blizzard 35

-Lamar Pritchett had a great first half, forcing a fumble and notching an interception.

-Jamel Watson is getting into regular season shape with a 3-sack game.

-Bernie Serra rushed for over 100 yards and 3 touchdowns.

-Jayson McCoy was tried at FB and TE and passed the test, hauling in 2 TDs and being phenomenal in blocking.

Game 4: Blizzard 41, Cowboys 35

-Jayson McCoy appears to be converting to FB/TE, as he switched from #13 to #49. He did not have his best game today: his blocking was okay but he had trouble holding on to the ball.

-We forgot to report that Bernie Serra switched from #34 to #22 at the beginning of camp. #22 was available following the departure of CB Raeshon Millen.

-Serra ran for another 100 yards and a TD. He is the clear starter going into week 1, though Pratt also played well.
