Orlando Evening News - Preseason Week 2 Preview
Orlando Apollos vs. Omaha Nighthawks: A Bounce-Back Game for the Apollos
By Bradley Knox
After a tough opening loss to the Jacksonville Sharks, the Orlando Apollos are eager to turn things around as they head to Omaha for a highly anticipated preseason Week 2 matchup with the Nighthawks. The Apollos' 28-22 defeat last week left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans, but Head Coach Steve Spurrier is confident that his team can bounce back stronger this week.
For the Apollos, the key to success lies in finding consistency on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Austin Appleby showed flashes of promise last week but struggled to maintain momentum when it mattered most. He’ll need to build chemistry with his receiving corps, led by veteran Chris Thompson and the dynamic Jalin Marshall. The offensive line, anchored by Chris Martin and Drew Farris, will also need to tighten up, as penalties and missed blocks hindered the offense last week.
On defense, the Apollos must do a better job of limiting explosive plays. While the 4-3 defense led by Azeem Victor and Kenny Peterson will provide pressure, they’ll need to tighten up in the secondary to contain the Nighthawks’ fast-paced passing attack. Cornerbacks Ladarius Gunter and Jerome Couplin III will have their hands full with wideouts like Marcus Harris and Antonio Robineon, who can stretch the field with ease.
Special teams also have to improve after some miscues in Week 1. Jalin Marshall and Akeem Hunt will be key in the return game, and kicker Ben Turk will need to find his rhythm after a shaky start.
With the fanbase expecting a bounce-back performance, all eyes will be on Orlando to see if they can correct their mistakes and build momentum heading into the regular season. Expect a high-energy game, with both teams eager to make a statement after tough Week 1 losses.
Key to Victory: Control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and get Austin Appleby into a rhythm with his receivers.

Omaha Nighthawks: Rebounding Against the Apollos After Tough Loss
By Adam Blake
It’s been a week of reflection and adjustment for the Omaha Nighthawks after a crushing 52-26 defeat at the hands of the Ohio Glory. The preseason is about making mistakes and learning from them, and Omaha’s Week 1 loss exposed several areas of concern. Now, with the Orlando Apollos coming to town for a pivotal Week 2 matchup, Coach Bart Andrus and his squad are focused on cleaning up those mistakes and getting back on track.
Quarterback G.J. Kinne, who struggled to find any consistency last week, will need to step up and take control of the offense. He’ll be facing a tough Orlando defense, but he’s got weapons like Marcus Harris and Antonio Robineon to target, both of whom have the speed and skill to stretch the field. The offensive line, led by Tray Allen and Mike Caputo, will need to do a better job of protecting Kinne and creating running lanes for Garrett Wolfe, who showed some positive flashes despite the loss.
Defensively, the Nighthawks will need to be more disciplined. Last week’s performance was riddled with missed tackles and blown coverages, leaving the defense vulnerable to big plays. The Apollos’ passing game, led by Austin Appleby, will be a formidable test for cornerbacks Dovonte Edwards and James Harrell, who will need to lock down Orlando’s receivers to give their defensive line, spearheaded by Claude Harriott, a chance to get after the quarterback.
Special teams should also be a focus for Omaha. Antonio Fenelus and Garrett Wolfe will handle the return duties, and they’ll be crucial in giving the offense good field position, especially if Kinne and company can’t consistently move the ball. Kicker Cory Ohnesorge, coming off a solid performance in Week 1, will need to stay steady under pressure and capitalize on any scoring opportunities.
This game will be about execution, especially on the defensive side. If Omaha can clean up their mistakes and start to gel as a team, they could find success against a hungry Apollos squad. The Omaha fanbase is eager to see their team rise to the challenge and make a statement after a difficult first week.
Key to Victory: Tighten up defensively, protect the quarterback, and find rhythm in the passing game.

UNITED CONTINENTAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE – PRESEASON WEEK 2 AFTER-ACTION REPORT
By Wes Callahan, American Sports Wire
In a thrilling Thursday night clash at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium on August 18, the Orlando Apollos edged the Omaha Nighthawks 22-15 in Game 1 of Preseason Week 2. Despite a slow start, the Apollos rallied late to secure the victory in a game marked by explosive plays, special teams heroics, and gritty defense. Here’s the complete breakdown:
Scoring Breakdown by Quarter
First Quarter:
• OMA: The Nighthawks set the tone early when Garrett Wolfe burst for a 78-yard touchdown run. Although the PAT attempt fell short, Omaha managed to carve out an early 6-0 advantage, with the drive consuming just 29 seconds of the quarter’s clock.
Second Quarter:
• ORL: The Apollos answered with a 15-yard touchdown run by Akeem Hunt. However, the extra point was not converted, and the drive took nine plays for 94 yards, cutting the deficit.
• ORL: On their next possession, kicker Ben Turk nailed a 29-yard field goal over six plays, further boosting Orlando’s scoring.
• OMA: The Nighthawks struck back as Wolfe connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass from G.J. Kinne. Once again, the PAT attempt was unsuccessful, keeping Omaha’s tally modest.
• ORL: With time winding down in the half, Hunt delivered a highlight-reel play—a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The extra point attempt failed once more, but Orlando ended the half with a 15-12 lead.
Third Quarter:
• The third frame remained scoreless, as both teams battled to adjust their game plans and recalibrate on defense.
Fourth Quarter:
• OMA: Omaha’s Brandon Coutu connected on a 21-yard field goal after a methodical nine-play drive, adding three points to the Nighthawks’ total.
• ORL: In the decisive stretch, Orlando’s offense struck when Kevin Anderson found Ishmael Hyman on an 18-yard pass. The extra point was good, and the Apollos finished strong, holding on for a final score of 22-15.
Team & Individual Performance
The Apollos managed 205 total offensive yards, with a balanced attack that featured 119 passing yards and 86 rushing yards. Akeem Hunt led the ground game with 11 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown, and his 99-yard kickoff return was the play of the game. On the aerial side, Kevin Anderson efficiently completed 6 of 8 passes for 62 yards, posting an impressive 136.5 passer rating despite coming off two sacks.
Omaha, meanwhile, accumulated 397 total yards—262 through the air and 135 on the ground. G.J. Kinne, despite facing pressure (2 sacks), completed 6 of 10 passes for 137 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception, while Eric Crouch provided additional spark with 154 yards through 9 completions on 16 attempts. The Nighthawks’ offense, however, was ultimately stifled by turnovers and an inability to convert on crucial fourth-down opportunities.
Special teams were a key factor in this contest. Orlando’s Ben Turk was flawless on his lone field goal attempt, and Akeem Hunt’s electrifying kickoff return for a touchdown provided the spark that propelled the Apollos into the lead. For Omaha, Brandon Coutu’s 21-yard field goal proved to be their only consistent scoring outlet in the final quarter.
Postgame Interviews
Steve Spurrier, Orlando Head Coach:
"We came into this game with a chip on our shoulder after the loss to the Sharks, and I’m proud of how our guys battled back. Akeem’s kickoff return was a game-changer. We need to work on consistency—our extra point conversions and protection up front—but tonight, the boys showed real heart."
Bart Andrus, Omaha Head Coach:
"It was a tough night for us. We allowed big plays on special teams and couldn’t sustain drives. Garrett Wolfe did everything we asked of him, but the rest of our offense didn’t click. We’ll review the tape and make the necessary adjustments. We’re still building, and this game gives us plenty to work on."
Injury Report
No major injuries were reported following the game. Both teams remain at full strength heading into their upcoming preseason matchups.
Final Thoughts
This contest showcased the unpredictable nature of preseason football in the UCFL. The Apollos’ resilience and big-play capability, especially on special teams, proved to be the difference in a hard-fought battle. Meanwhile, the Nighthawks will look to tighten up their execution and reduce turnovers as they move forward. Stay tuned for more action as the season unfolds!
