I was looking at a video from 8 months ago about Madden NFL 18's "New" features and how they were simply old features from older games that were readded. Now, one of the parts of the video was from NCAA Football 10, which has a "Gameplan" section, in which you can alter the way your players will behave and change them to be more aggressive or conservative. The sections that were in that section, as well as their effect, are:

    Offensive Adjustments:
  • General: Aggressive (More Big Plays, at the cost of more penalties), Balanced or Conservative (Less Big Plays, but less penalties)
  • Get Open: Run Deep (Receivers run deep after their route is over, but there are less safe short routes), Normal, Comeback (Receivers comeback for a safer route, but there are far less deep routes)
  • Holding Blocks: Block Longer (Longer blocks at the cost of more Holding Calls), Normal or Avoid Holding (Far less holding calls, but blocks are held for less time.)
  • Impact Blocks: Bigger Blocks (Bigger Blocks downfield, at the cost of more clipping calls), Normal or Avoid Clipping (Less Clipping Calls, but Less Big Blocks down field)
  • Catching: Make a Big Play (First Tackle is more likely to be dodged, at the cost of actually not catching the football), Normal or Focus on Catch (More likely to keep possession of the ball, but less likely to break tackles)
  • Big Run: Break More Tackles (More Highlight Stick broken tackles, but more fumbles), Normal or Protect the Ball (Less Fumbles, but less broken tackles)

    Defensive Adjustments:
  • General: Aggressive (More Big Plays, at the cost of more penalties and Big Plays by the opponent), Balanced or Conservative (Less Big Plays, but more safe and with less penalties)
  • Big Hits: Big Hits (More Hit Stick Tackles, at the cost of missed tackles and broken tackles), Balanced or Sure Tackle (Few missed or broken tackles, but less Hit Stick Tackles)
  • Strip Ball: Strip Ball (More Strip Tackles, at the cost of a lot of Facemasking penalties), Balanced or Wrap Up (Few Strip Tackles, but less Facemasking penalties)
  • Zone Coverage: Tight Zone (Shorter coverage that can be beat deep), Balanced or Loose Coverage (Deeper coverage that can be beat with short routes).
  • Defensive Line: Jump the Snap (Higher chances to Jump the Snap, but higher chaces of Offsides and Encroachment penalties), Balanced or Avoid Offsides (Less chances of Offsides and Encroachment penalties, but less likely to Jump the Snap).
  • Pass Defense: Pick (More interceptions, but more likely to get beat deep), Normal or Swat (More swats, but less INTs)

I ended up making the connection that these changes are present in Madden NFL 08, but in the form of Penalty Sliders. I tried to relate them to the Penalty sliders and I think what happens is this:

  • Holding: Offense, Holding Blocks. (Higher = Block Longer)
  • Clipping: Offense, Impact Blocks. (Higher = Avoid Clipping, I think)
  • Defensive Pass Interference: Could be Defense, Pass Defense or Defense, Zone Coverage. Could be both as well. (Higher = Pick and Loose Coverage I think)
  • Offensive Pass Interference: Offense, Catching. (Higher = Make a Big Play I think)
  • Facemask: Defense, Strip Ball. However, this only alters the amount of penalties called for it, not the likehood of Strip Ball tackles.
  • False Start: Not affects anyone, just the Offensive Line.
  • Intentional Grounding: Only affects CPU QB's Patience.
  • Roughing the Kicker: Defense, Big Hits. (Higher = Sure Tackle)
  • Roughing the Passer: Defense, Defensive Line. (Higher = Avoid Offsides)

EA really likes to use the same code for everything. Anyway, this is some pretty interesting stuff as well.

Ever since Madden 2008 I'd say EA has run out of ideas and is just selling glorified new updated rosters every year for $60+....totally not worth it...and shows a lack of innovation....
For help running madden please consult my guide and posts from fellow users here....thanks! (link below) viewtopic.php?f=22&t=17907
I'm not on site much, so if I don't respond it's b/c I haven't checked in a while.

Agree. They seem to simply remove some very good features for no particular reason ... then they add those features as "New" stuff. The BS that EA puts fans that buy the newer Madden NFL games through.

Anyway, I was doing some testing, and I think I found a way to consistently increasing the aggressiveness of the wide receivers when going for the ball, as well as the defensive backs likehood to try and get the ball. I was doing a little test against the Titans (They are next in my Journal/Franchise, along with our Color Rush unis). I set 75 OPI and 50 DPI. I also set Interceptions to 37 for both CPU and Human and left Knockdowns at 17.

On the first half, my FS, JJ Wilcox, picked off Mariota after he simply didn't read the coverage and practically threw the ball to him. I usually see balls thrown directly at defenders simply drop to the ground. On another scenario, something similar happened, but instead of a pick, Supernaw (I think he's their TE#2) got in there and snatched the ball out of the air.

OPI and DPI control the aggressiveness of the Receiver and Defender when trying to make a play on the ball. I'd say that keeping a high OPI and a mid to low DPI will allow your the Receiver to make a play on the ball most of the time, yet the defender still can make a play on it with the right positioning. And with INTs set to 37 as opposed to 7 as I originally had, I can finally see some interceptions (Done by the AI, from now on I will not user control any defender mostly because I suck and I would give any defensive player I control a boost of awareness). Now there are far less would be INTs dropped to the ground, but not a whole lot of more INTs.

Quick note: Most of my corners and safeties have so-so hands, I don't know just yet what will happen when you give a Jalen Ramsey like corner those slider sets. But I think him getting a pick a game is somewhat realistic.

It's Electronic Arts my friends... one of the worst videogame companies ever. Don't be surprised. Did you see what they have done with the Star Wars Battlefront franchise? If they are capable of doing THAT, they are capable to doing anything.

This was discussed a few months back but i wanted to ask does the coaches aggression level and off/def awr affect the ball game? i had the same personnel 2 fra seasons in a row an when i hired a good d coordinator (jim harbaugh) my defense was spectacular..#5 against the pass..most games i shut out or limited the opp to 14pts....his harbaugh d rating is 90 or 91....

well the next season i went cheap and got a d coordinator rated around 82 or 85.....my defense was horrible against the pass...like#30 and the pc would go score for score against me until late 3rd or 4th quarter....

same defense, same plays, same personnel......dif coaches different results....

same for offensive side of the ball....i noticed lower/cheaper coaches had more fumbles and dropped passes compared to having sean payton +90 off.....rating....where i could score at will....my off and def ovr ratings were same year 1 to year 2.....so i think coaches do matter IMO.....what do you think?
For help running madden please consult my guide and posts from fellow users here....thanks! (link below) viewtopic.php?f=22&t=17907
I'm not on site much, so if I don't respond it's b/c I haven't checked in a while.

Definitely. The more Priority Points a coach has on a specific skill (QB, HB, DL, LB and so on), the better those players will perform. If, say, on your franchise you manage to get Tom Brady as a O. Coordinator (After he retires), he'll give your QBs a great boost of accuracy and power. If you get Antonio Brown as a O. Coordinator, he'll probably give your WRs more chances of getting receptions. If you get Champ Bailey as D. Coordinator, he'll probably make your Corners be very good at covering receivers and picking off the football.

Other coach stats like Motivation (How pumped up the coach gets your guys), Ethic (How likely are your guys to commit penalties), Knowledge (How good is the coach on Situational Football. A low Knowledge Coach might call a HB Sweep or WR Reverse on 4th and 1 against a fast defense. A High Knowledge Coach might call a QB Sneak or HB Dive on a similar situation.) and the Philosophies of each coach (Coaches that are more pass defense biased use 1DT formations and get more picks, Coaches that are more run defense biased use 2DT formations and get more fumbles) alter the results of each game.

DPI and OPI are more a general aggressiveness modifier for receivers and defensive backs/linebackers when the ball is in the air. Putting 99 DPI will make the defenders do everything they can to get the ball.

I decided to do a little research about penalties. Last season, teams averaged about 6.7 penalties per game that were accepted, 2 of which were defensive penalties that gave the opponent automatic first downs. However, I wondered how many of those penalties actually appear on M08. Unnecessary roughness, 12 man on the field, Illegal formations, shifts, motion and Personal Fouls (Other than Facemasking) don't appear on the game. So, out of 3420 penalties that were accepted last season (According to Pro Football Reference), the ones that could be replicated on Madden 08 are...
  • Offensive Holding: 664. 2.59 calls per game.
  • False Start: 553. 2 calls per game.
  • Defensive Pass Interference: 266. 1.04 calls per game.
  • Offsides: 180. .7 calls per game.
  • Delay of Game: 130. .51 calls per game.
  • Offensive Pass Interference: 115. .45 calls per game.
  • Roughing the Passer: 105. .41 calls per game.
  • Facemask: 89. .35 calls per game.
  • Encroachment: 53. .21 calls per game.
  • Intentional Grounding: 33. .13 calls per game.
  • Running into the Kicker: 9. .03 calls per game.
  • Clipping: 5. .02 calls per game.
  • Fair Catch Interference: 3. .01 calls per game.
  • Roughing the Kicker: 1. .00 calls per game.
That's 2206 of the 3420 total penalties, or 64.5% of all penalties.

Of course, the results for this season could be different (I expect Roughing the Passer to be a bit higher).

So, I decided to test the sliders in practice mode, and here's what I found:

Offensive pass interference: if this is low, 50 or below, the receivers are really passive and almost never get open. I completed about 10% of my passes. When I set it to 99, and keep DPI at 50, I completed over 90% of my passes. When I set both OPI and DPI at 99, I completed about 60% of my passes. Interestingly, my receivers still got open a lot, but the defensive knocked the ball out of their hands with hits a lot more. Regardless, I think the OP is correct in stating that higher ratings increase aggressiveness on both sides of the ball here.

Holding: I set it to 0, then timed how long it took to get sacked. Averaged about 4 seconds. Set it to 99 and timed it at about 7 seconds. So, holding does seem let blockers hold blocks longer.

Set Offsides to 0, ran a straight HB dive. Averaged around 7-8 yards a carry. Set it to 99 and averaged around 3-4 yards a carry. Line play also became quite garbled and glitchy at this setting. So, it definitely helps Dline get off the ball, but also seems to keep keep the Oline from smooth forward animations.

Clipping: low settings and my running game was sluggish and glitchy. High settings equaled bigger holes, and more active linemen.

Roughing the passer: low settings, the d line seemed a little less aggressive on the pass rush, but time wise, there was not much difference between 0 and 99 in terms of how long before a sack occurred.

Roughing the Kicker: at 0, I ran 10 counters, lost yardage on 9 of them. Blocked 6 out of 10 kicks. At 99, ran 10 counters, gained yardage on 9 of them, blocked one out of 10 kicks. Low settings definitely seem to let the dogs out.

Another one you should check is "Kick/Punt Catch Interference" and run play action fakes with it. With it low, the LBs and anyone in zone should ignore the play fake, and any D-Lineman that bursts through the line should tackle the running back. With it high, the LBs should run down to the line with the fake, and if any Lineman comes through, they should ignore the back and get a sack.

Also, I guess when you say Offsides, you mean "False Start" right?
