A quick question: One of the stats that annoy me the most is the "Pancakes" stat. The NFL doesn't track it, but Madden does because reasons. And it is the only stat that uses when it comes to determining Pro Bowl Berths for O-Linemen. The thing is, my entire Offensive Line (Most of the time anyway) will always get nominated because they keep raking up pancakes, whereas everyone else is lower than my guys (There are some exceptions, but it normally happens this way). How are your big uglies' Pancakes with this slider set compared to the rest of the league?

I have that same problem and I don't think there are any slider settings that can fix it. What I do, using NZA's editor, is to knocked back the total pancakes my olinemen are getting 2-3 times during the season so that they are not leading that stat category at their position and all starting in the Pro Bowl. I think it is important to do that as well bc I think it gives them a leg up on the other olinemen in the leagues as far as progression goes.

As an update, I ran 8 playoff games in franchise mode, with one significant change -- using Caloupe's scripts I enabled the Peyton Manning script and went down to 11 min quarters. However, even moving down to 11 min quarters there were more plays per game due to the Manning script. Here are the updated stats:

Rushing:
425 Attempts for 1,710 yards. That's 26.6 carries per game, the NFL average is 26. It's a per team/per game average of 106.9 yds, the NFL average is 108. And is a per carry average of 4.02, the NFL average is 4.15.

Passing:
351 completions on 591 passes for 4,889 yards, with 30 TDs and 10 ints. and 25 sacks. That's 21.9 completions per game (NFL average is 22), 36.9 attempts per game (NFL average is 36), a completion % of 59.3 (NFL average is 63%), 305.5 yds per game (NFL average is 241), 1.87 TDs per game/per team (NFL average is 1.8), 0.62 ints per game/per team (NFL average is 0.8) and 1.56 sacks per team/per game (NFL average is 2.3).

So, with those new stats in mind, I am going to make the following tweaks:
1. Change Pass Blocking to 15 (from 20)
2. Change Interceptions to 35 (from 30)
3. Change Defense Break Blocks to 12 (from 10)

Importantly, the coach run/pass setting will be set to 30% pass / 70% run, with aggression at 70/30 (although I may experiment with tweaking that setting).

The above tweaks will hopefully lead to more sacks, more ints and a fewer passing yards.

A little tip, use average ranges instead of just averages. For example, the NFL's lowest rushing attempts average is 22.5 Rushes per game, and the highest rushing attempts average is 32.9 Rushes per game. So the running game is working properly.

I'll make a list pretty quick. I got these stats from Pro Football Reference, all of them about the 2017 season:
    Passing Stats
  • Passing Attempts (36.9): The average is 34.2 pass attempts. The highest is 38 Att/G, the lowest is 29.5 Att/G. Yours are well within the range.
  • Pass Completions (21.9): The average is 21.2 completed passes. The highest is 24.3 Cmp/G, the lowest is 17.8 Cmp/G. Pretty well here.
  • Completion % (59.3%): The average is 62.1%. The highest is 72%, the lowest is 54.4%. Looks good, it could be a bit higher, but it looks good.
  • Passing Yards (305.5 Yds): The average is 224.4 Yds/G. The highest is 276.9 Yds/G, the lowest is 175.7 Yds/G. Unless everyone was Drew Brees or Tom Brady, the passing yards shouldn't be this high.
  • TD Passes (1.87): The average is 1.4 TDs/Att. The highest is 2.4 TDs/Att. The lowest is 0.8 TDs/Att. Looking good.
  • TD% per Pass Attempt (5.1%): The average is 4.2%. The highest is 6.7%. The lowest is 2.5%. Keeps looking good.
  • Interceptions (0.62 INTs): The average is 0.8 Ints. The highest is 1.8 Ints. The lowest is 0.4 Ints. It is a bit on the low end of the scale, but it is not so unrealistic.
  • Int% per Pass Attempt (1.7%): The average is 2.5%. The highest is 4.9%. The lowest is 1.4%. Again, in the low end but not totally unrealistic.
  • Yards Per Attempts (8.29 Yds/Att): The average is 7.0 Y/A. The highest is 8.1 Y/A. The lowest is 5.7 Y/A. Red flag here.
  • Yards Per Completion (13.94 Yds/Com): The average is 11.3 Y/C. The highest is 12.6 Y/C. The lowest is 8.9 Y/C. Redder flag here. A little tip. After the game ends, you can go to the Statistics menu, in which you can check the game's stats, drive summary of the current drive (If you check it mid game) and, more importantly, the team's passing log. This shows which routes the team used the most. You can check that and keep track of the most used routes per team.
  • Sacks (1.56) : The average is 2.3 Sacks. The highest is 3.5 Sacks. The lowest is 1.1. A bit in the low end, but not totally unrealistic.

    Rushing Stats
  • Rushing Attempts (26.6): The average is 26.9 run attempts. The highest is 32.9 Att/G, the lowest is 22.5 Att/G. Looks good here.
  • Rushing Yards (106.9): The average is 109.7 Yds/G. The highest is 141.4 Yds/G, the lowest is 76.3 Yds/G. Pretty damn accurate.
  • Yards Per Carry (4.02): The average is 4.1 Y/C. The highest is 4.7 Y/C. The lowest is 3.4 Y/C. So, pretty accurate too.)

I'll be trying the set with the changes you did on my franchise so I can pile up some stats and see how it goes, although with 2 additional changes:
  • Pass Blocking :18
  • RB Ability: 50

Ok, did my test game. I thought I would never see the CPU find a way to dominate Time Of Possession ever, but here we are. That Ball Control philosophy that Run biased, High Aggressiveness gives the CPU really makes them control the ball.

Game Log Ends
------------------------------------------------------------

I did my personal changes to Pass Blocking, RB Ability and the Special Teams slider (I'm using the "Fewer Touchbacks" script, and that needs a higher kickoff length)

I'll the analysis I do on my usual slider research. I'll be analyzing both teams' combined stats.
General Stats
  • Points Per Game: The average is 21.7 points per team. The lowest is 14.6 P/G, the highest is 29.8 P/G. Both teams combined for 59 points, 29.5 points per team. Is in the high end of the range.

jose, that is all so incredibly helpful! Thanks! And, it just further highlights the areas that need improvement, namely, passing yards per game and passing yards per attempt (and sacks too). Once I get through my current .fra off-season, I will be able to run multiple-game tests on these new settings.

For anyone following along, here are the new settings:

Code: Select all

Slider                         Human   CPU
QB Accuracy                       65    65
Pass Blocking                     20    20 - change to 15
Receiver Catching                 50    50
Running Ability                   65    65
Offensive line Run Blocking       30    30
Defensive Awareness               45    45
Defensive line Knockdowns          5     5
Interceptions                     30    30 - change to 35
Defensive Break Blocks            10    10 - change to 12
Tackling                          40    40
Fieldgoal Length                  45    45
Fieldgoal Accuracy                99    99
Punt Length                       30    30
Punt Accuracy                     99    99
Kickoff Length                    48    48

Coach Settings: change Run/Pass % to 30% Pass / 70% Run and Offensive Aggression at 70/30 for played games.  Simmed games Run/Pass % at 70% pass / 30% Run and Offensive Aggression at 30/70.

Pentalty Settings: leave Intentional Grounding at 95

Time: 11 accel clock with "Payton Manning" script on

I think I might know the reason why there are so many passing yards. I present you this line of a game I stopped at the half:

Code: Select all

RECEIVING                      REC  YDS   AVG LONG   TD DROP  YAC
Antonio Brown                    5  180  36.0   73    3    0   67

I was facing the Pats and they have a playbook that let's them have a box safety by default. They decided to play that set (As well as either a blitz or Cover 1) exactly 3 times. On those 3 times, I audibled AB to run a fade streak, and called for a Play Action handoff. So, play action, the single safety freezes, AB gets wide open deep, TD. AB got so much separation because of this:

Code: Select all

Running Ability                   65    65

RB Ability increases player speed and acceleration. That easily means WR that create more separation at the line and that means a lot more streaks appear open to the opposing QB, equaling lots of yards. I'd suggest lowering this to 50 to see if there is less yardage.

There's almost a 100% chance in every game that there will be a 75 yard passing TD with nearly every single slider set, tweak, etc. I've attempted with CPU vs. CPU

It gets even worse if the game is close in the 4th quarter - the "comeback code" has made this game nearly unplayable - has there ever been a fix for this? No amount of actual tweaking within game will stop this.

Offensive Aggressiveness has a lot of effects. The one I noticed the most is how many deep passes the CPU will use. My preferred setting is 56, I found great completion percentage with it. Lower aggressiveness actually means deeper passing plays, a more vertical offense approach, whereas higher leads to a more horizontal, west coast like passing style.

From what I've seen, lower aggresiveness = less vertical plays. I thought higher aggresiveness would result in more short plays, but lately I've been seeing the opposite.

You know? You might be right about lower aggressiveness causing less vertical plays. I remembered part of my research on the Coach Philosophies, specifically the Defensive Pass/Run Ratio and Defensive Aggressiveness and what they do. I used part of moonbax's research to kickstart mine. Specifically, this little chart here:
moonbax wrote:West Coast & Contain Passing: (Run <50% / Off. Agg. ≥51)

Vertical Passing & Disrupt Passing: (Run <50% / Off. Agg. ≤50)

Ball Control & Force the Pass: (Run ≥50% / Off. Agg. ≥51)

Establish Run & Shut Down Runs: (Run ≥50% / Off. Agg. ≤50)

However, The fact that the defensive philosophies were based on the OFFENSIVE ratios was weird. So, this is what I wrote originally about each D. Philosophy:
Jose21crisis wrote:
  • Contain Passing: This happens if the Defensive Pass/Run Ratio is Pass-biased (51% or more) and the Defensive Aggressiveness is Low (50 or less).
The team will use more coverage plays and drop more personnel in coverage to protect against the pass.
  • Disrupt Passing: This happens if the Defensive Pass/Run Ratio is Pass-biased (51% or more) and the Defensive Aggressiveness is High (51 or more). The team will use blitzes to force the QB to dump it off quickly. This could result in errant passes or turnovers.
  • Shut Down Runs: This happens if the Defensive Pass/Run Ratio is Run-biased (50% or less) and the Defensive Aggressiveness is Low (50 or less). The team protects against the running game by calling upon their base defense to stop it, forcing the teams to go to the air to get any yardage.
  • Force The Pass: This happens if the Defensive Pass/Run Ratio is Run-biased (50% or less) and the Defensive Aggressiveness is High (51 or more).
The team thinks their Defensive Backs are capable of covering the receivers without problem. This allows them to use 8 man fronts to take away the run and force the offense to go to the air.

After running a few games, this is what I came up:
Jose21crisis wrote:A Pass Biased defense with High Defensive Aggression is, indeed, a "Disrupt Passing" defense.
Therefor, a Pass Biased defense with Low Defensive Aggression is a "Contain Passing" defense.
A Run Biased defense with High Defensive Aggression is a "Shut Down Runs" defense.
Therefore, a Run Biased defense with Low Defensive Aggression is a "Force The Pass" defense.

Notice that, in the original chart Disrupt Passing is associated with low aggressiveness. However, I ended up associating it with a high aggressiveness due to the higher amount of blitzes and man coverage.
On the same original chart, Shut Down Runs is associated with low aggressiveness. But my testings don't matchup with that, making it a high aggressiveness.

To put this short, maybe EA associated the "West Coast" offensive philosophy to low aggressiveness, and the "Vertical Passing" offensive philosophy to high aggressiveness, and did not hook up the descriptions properly because ... EA.

I found that the "Weekly Maintenance" option in MaddenAMP let's you change the Coaching sliders (Pass/Run Ratio, Aggressiveness. Both offensive and defensive) of every coach, based on whenever that game will be simulated or that game will be played. I'm using that right now to have my franchise have simmed games with realistic stats, as well as to have the team's I'm playing against get the proper slider adjustments. It also allows me to fix the pancake stats of my O-Line, which is always good.

Those 75+ passing TDs ... are they the "Receiver breaks a tackle and is off to the races" type or the Deep Bomb type?

I was playing with a slider set a while ago. Not perfectly sure what did it, but a combination of Knockdowns at 35, Punt Catch Interference at 5, Defensive Pass Interference at 77 and Offensive Aggressiveness at 30 allowed me to see a few games with the QB not trying a 50+ yard pass. The only 73 pass TD the CPU QB did against my team was a 15 yard reception with a few broken tackles (Poor tackling is poor) and whiffed tackles that was taken the distance.
