Now the run a balanced mix of West Coast ( quick WR screens, TE screens, Shotgun Spread runs) and Power Running Vertical passing.

I absolutely agree, and the Haley vs Arians influence is one of the best examples out there of that so that's awesome that you brought it up. It is commonly cited in sports writing about offensive systems that every team in the NFL today is really a "hybrid," which is why I've even disregarded my own suggested Coach Aggression sliders and I've made every team "West Coast" in Madden 08, with Offensive Aggression 53+. I've been getting completion rates and generally a style of play consistent with the current NFL that I could never get with Aggression 50, "Vertical Passing".

And because every team uses plays that require precision and timing, like those Bubble screens certainly do, I think that furthers the point that you have to be a Precision Passer in 90%+ of offensive systems in the NFL, if not all.

If I remember correctly the Scrambler title is given by the AI based on a QB's SPD and ACC. If a fast QB is given the Pocket title the AI will probably change it back to Scrambler in season two.

Re: 2016 Player (WR, QB, etc.) Role/Weapon and Style/Tendency Adjustments Discussion Thread

Postby moonbax » Sun Jul 31, 2016 8:47 pm

I have expanded the topic to be about all Player Roles, with the QB style/tendency thrown in to supplement.

Here is something I think could make a big difference in the timing of Return plays:

-----------------------------------
Arrow with 3 X's: Return Specialist
-----------------------------------

This player is considered a Return Specialist.

This role will be removed when the player averages 15 yards or less per kick
return or 5 yards or less per punt return for the season.

This role increases the player's value 12%.

During a return*, this player will receive AWR +3, AGI +2, ACC +2, and BTK +2.

His blockers will receive RBK +2 while his opponents receive TAK -2.

*Might also apply to interception and fumble returns by these particular players, may be something to consider.

I have gone through ourlads.com's depth charts for each NFL team and I have compiled all of the starting returners, plus a few others, into this list of potential "Return Specialists."

Article on "Top 10 Return Specialists" in 2015: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2516 ... on/page/11
KR averages: http://www.footballdb.com/stats/stats.h ... =&limit=50
PR averages: http://www.footballdb.com/stats/stats.h ... =&limit=50

Follow-up on performance of Return Specialists:

I made Marcus Sherels (PR), Cordarrelle Patterson (KR), Harry Douglas (PR), and Antonio Andrews (KR) "Return Specialists" and decided to test the effects. I played four first halves (4 x 30:00 games) with Vikings and Titans using those roles.

Punt Returns: YES. Most punt returns were over 10 yards! I saw returns of 9, 10, 12, and 13 by the AI, and I thought there was at least one greater than that. Both Douglas and Sherels had ~10.0 yd punt return averages after 30:00

Kick Returns: Not as big of a difference, but there was a 40+ yarder by Andrews called back due to Holding; Patterson got about the same numbers I usually see from him in Madden, 24-29 yd averages, a long of 29.

How about that, less than 24 hours after adding him to the (??) category and Reggie Bush signs a one-year deal with the Bills. Honestly, I'm not quite sure where he fits in with them, because the Bills have several Return Specialists already, including Archer and Arenas. He's an option there too, though; I suppose if you like the idea of using Madden 08's position battles to determine the best return man then you'll be interested in the options the Bills have.

EDIT

Aha! So Reggie is going to be a "Return Specialist" for the Bills in 2016:

Bills GM Doug Whaley said Monday that the team views Reggie Bush as "mainly a returner."
Whaley said the coaches may draw up "some sets" that will have Bush and LeSean McCoy on the field "together," but the Bills mainly want Bush to upgrade their return game. Were McCoy to miss time, Bush would become a candidate for passing-game work [...]. Aug 1 - 4:20 PM

Actually, it's looking like Dallas' primary returner for both kick and punts will be Lucky Whitehead, with Cole Beasley and Dez Bryant also occasionally fielding punts. Dez has been doing it a lot lately in practice.

Did you not see Whitehead at PR/KR on that list? Unless you're just saying Beasley shouldn't be considered a Return Specialist, which I could understand.

What I'm saying is, if Beasley returns punts, he probably won't be returning very many. And he isn't that great at it to begin with.

A most reasonable claim; he is eliminated. I just threw him in that batch, but if I had just gone by the ourlads depth chart I would have only used the starter (Whitehead).

EDIT

More potential Return Specialists added and the list overhauled based on the current ourlads.com depth charts for all 32 teams as of... within the last hour.

Notable changes:

BUF: Let Javier Arenas go, Dri Archer DNR, Reggie Bush is most likely their Return Specialist for the season.

BAL: Let Kaelin Clay go, Campanaro is the current returner.

HOU: Tyler Ervin (rookie) added

TEN: Tre McBride (rookie) added

Other: If they were buried deeper in the depth chart I removed them from the list.

I have been thinking about ways to get the completion rates up. So are you saying that one way of achieving that would be to make all teams ''West Coast'' with offensive aggression 53+? And how much does the Precision Passer role affect the decision making of the QB?

There was one time I got over 51% completion averages with "Vertical" teams, which I had to lower Defensive Aggression down to 20 (recommended by cmp66) to get.

However, even with regular defensive aggression I can still get 55-59% completion averages using "West Coast" teams. Also, I've found that "precision passers" might help a little bit, but not as much as I would like. It mostly just changes the animations that you see, the trajectory of the ball and etc.. It doesn't necessarily make QBs more intelligent decision-makers with their passing. :\
