I'm frustrated that they don't work for me in any OS. Maybe I'll get it figured out soon though.

You have use the db_editor and open up the steameddata.db file...there are tutorials out there if you do a little searching

You cannot load the entire dat file in the dbeditor, it isnt designed for that. You will first need to extract the individual template files from the dat file with JDHalfracks's DFR, then you can load the extracted files with dbeditor.
