Postby moonbax » Sat Nov 12, 2016 3:39 am

This is a redesign/compilation of 2016 NFL Coach Playbooks with 2016 NFL Coach Sliders, 2016 NFL Slot Corners & SS/ILBs, 2016 NFL Strong/Weak DE/OLBs, and 2016 NFL 1- and 3-technique DE/DTs, with new listings describing "Big" (three-Safety) sets and modified/substituted 4-2-5 and 3-3-5 nickel, 4-1-6 and 3-2-6 dime and 3-1-7 quarter sets which each NFL defense may be using, assuming that the Depth Chart (DCHT in DB Editor) and/or Formation Subs (PLSU in DB Editor) are adjusted accordingly**.

**For an importable DCHT and PLSU with (most of) of these assignments already done check this thread in Finished Mods: viewtopic.php?f=86&t=18989

The reason these positions are important in Madden is because when you run a "Cover 3 [Buzz]" from a dime[/quarter] set in Madden it is CB3 and CB4[/CB5]/FS2[/FS3] who cover the "Flats," making them the "Force" or "Contain" players from what I understand [in "Buzz" or "Lurk" coverage the Safeties are unavailable to play "Force" or "Contain"]:

Re: 2016 NFL Coach Offensive & Defensive Playbooks v2.0 Now w/ "Big" & Substituted Formations

Postby moonbax » Fri Nov 18, 2016 2:23 am

I noticed that Madden's playbooks tend to contain a very specific combination of Dime "Zone Blitzes" and/or Quarter "Zone Blitzes." Quarter Zone Blitz plays, which are Cover 2, tend to show up more in books containing a large amount of either Cover 2/Tampa 2 coverage or "Cloud" or "Rolling" coverage. "Cloud" is a type of coverage which uses Cover 2 behavior on one side and Cover 3 behavior on the other side.

On the other hand, the Dime "Zone Blitz" found in Madden uses the same principles as a "Fire" Zone Blitz, and is often found in conjunction with 2-4-5 and 1-5-5 nickel defenses. Essentially, the specific type of "Zone Blitz" plays contained in each playbook are a HUGE tip-off as to what kind of principles the playbook was designed using, either "Cloud" or "Cover 2" Zone Blitzing, or "Sky" or "Fire" Zone Blitzing.

This is going to allow me to differentiate more specifically what type of principles each NFL defensive coordinator seems to be using, particularly in their dime/quarter and other long yardage sets.

I produced a list with every playbook found in the FF-modded GAMEDATA here: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18777&start=20#p89235. Here are what I think the most relevant books for this list would be:

3-4, NE, PIT, SD, NYJ (3-4 playbooks without 4-2-5 Strong nickel, no 4-1-6 Flat):
4-1-6/2-3-6 Zone Blitz only (no Quarter Zone Blitz)

Most 2-4-5 defenses would have the normal (2-3-6/4-1-6) Dime Zone Blitz in their playbook, which appears to be identical to a "Sky" coverage (SS covers Flat) and a "Fire" Zone Blitz:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_blitz wrote:A fire zone blitz is a specific zone blitz in which the defense rushes 5 with a 3-3 coverage behind it—three deep defenders and three underneath defenders.
Image
... these defenses would use Sky but probably not Cover 2/Quarter Blitz principles.
4-3, DET, JAX, NO, SEA (4-3 playbooks with 4-2-5 Strong nickel, no 4-1-6 Flat):
Quarter Zone Blitz only (no 4-1-6/2-3-6 Zone Blitz)

CLE, DAL, SF (3-4 playbooks with 4-2-5 Strong nickel, no 4-1-6 Flat):
Quarter Zone Blitz only (no 4-1-6/2-3-6 Zone Blitz)
moonbax wrote:MIN, STL, TEN (Schwartz), NYG, ARI (4-3 playbooks with 4-2-5 Strong nickel):
4-1-6 Flat Zone Blitz and Quarter Zone Blitz

IND, TB, CHI (4-3 Tampa 2 playbooks without 4-2-5 Strong nickel):
4-1-6 Flat Zone Blitz and Quarter Zone Blitz

ImageImage
4-1-6/2-3-6 Flat Zone Blitz (left), Quarter Zone Blitz (right)
CIN, BAL (4-3 and 46 Normal playbooks without 4-2-5 Strong nickel):
no 4-1-6/4-1-6 Flat Zone Blitz or Quarter Zone Blitz

... looks like defenses using either of these wouldn't use a whole lot of Sky or Cover 2/Quarter Blitzes.

Therefore, perhaps this is an excellent way to classify these defenses on my list, by whether the playbook I've assigned to them contains more "Fire" Zone Blitz or more "Cover 2" Zone Blitz and Cloud principles, as demonstrated by whether they contain the Dime Zone Blitz or the Quarter Zone Blitz:
‡ Cover 3 Buzz or Cover 1 Robber - SILB or Slot Corner is primary "Force" player (CB4/FS2/FS3) in dime and quarter sets
☾ Cover 3 Sky or Dime/"Fire" Zone Blitz - SS is primary "Force" player (CB4/FS2/FS3 or CB3) in dime and quarter sets
ɷ Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 2/Quarter Zone Blitz - CB is primary "Force" player in dime and quarter sets

For example, a defense using the MIN, TEN, IND, etc. defensive playbooks would be ☾ and ɷ. A defense using the 4-3, NO, CLE, etc. defensive books would be ɷ. And a defense using the 3-4, NE, NYJ, PIT or SD books would be ☾. Plus any defenses using Strong Inside Linebackers as Force players in long yardage/3rd down situations would additionally be ‡.

One case that is especially revealing is the differences in coverage used by these three books, which look very similar at first glance:

NYG
4-3 Normal/Over/Under (no Solid); 4-2-5 Normal/Strong, 3-3-5; 4-1-6 Normal/Flat, no 3-2-6
4-1-6 Flat Zone Blitz and Quarter Zone Blitz

IND (or TB)
4-3 Normal/Over/Under (no Solid); 4-2-5 Normal (no Strong), 3-3-5; 4-1-6 Normal/Flat, 3-2-6; no 3 Deep
4-1-6 Flat Zone Blitz and Quarter Zone Blitz

NO
4-3 Normal/Over/Under (no Solid); 4-2-5 Normal/Strong, 3-3-5; 4-1-6 Normal (no Flat), 3-2-6
Quarter Zone Blitz only (no 4-1-6/2-3-6 Zone Blitz)

There are fundamental differences exhibited in the design of the Zone Blitz plays between these books, with the first two including "Fire" Zone principles in addition to "Cloud" or "Cover 2" Zone Blitz principles. I think it is quite likely that Sean Payton's defense would be using both. The correct choice of playbook will also depend on what the personnel grouping would be in certain situations, and who would be used in coverage in those sets and who would be a blitzer. However, based on my observations I think perhaps Payton would really be:

Sean Payton
Def. IND (a 4-3 Cover 2/Tampa 2 with Big 4-2-5 and Big 3-3-5 nickel sets and Big 4-1-6 and Big 3-2-6 dime sets)

I've revamped the list to suit the principles demonstrated in each playbook assigned based on the kind of Zone Blitzes incorporated. Turns out a lot of what I already had up for each defense was already correct because I noted that a lot of "Fire" defenses use Safeties in the slot [often as a blitzer], see Vaccaro, Stafford.

Re-evaluated some potential Cover 2/Tampa 2 defenses: LA, NO, NYG, TB, DAL

moonbax wrote:The correct choice of playbook will also depend on what the personnel grouping would be in certain situations, and who would be used in coverage in those sets and who would be a blitzer...

This is a fascinating detail about Spagnuolo's defense that I didn't notice before, but I went back and checked as far back as this year's NO at NYG game and sure enough, Spags just does not use a WLB (Casillas) in dime sets, he'll use Kennard (SLB) there almost purely as a rusher, or even a stand-up DE there, Okwara. This means the type of coverage used in these sets will just be inherently different from that in a 3-2-6: "I see why EA would design a book for Spags (NYG) that didn't have 3-2-6... [his] dime sets function and behave much more like a 4-1-6 [or a quarter], which makes sense given the quote above regarding his "Fire Zone"-influenced tendencies. On the other hand, I do see a lot of Tampa 2 behavior from [LA's Gregg Williams'] dime sets, including straight drops by Ogletree to deep middle zone coverage out of these sets."

* NYG

3-3-5, 4-1-6, and "3-2-6" but their "3-2-6" dime sets look and function more like 4-1-6 dime or quarter sets, not 3-2-6; different linebackers are used in their nickel and dime sets, different behavior from a 3-2-6; frequent use of "rotating" coverage out of their nickel and dime sets (weak side LB often dropping into coverage), and possibly Cover 2 and/or some kind of "mixture" of Cover 2 and 2 Man in the same play at times? It seems like perhaps the outside corners are often playing Man while everyone else is in zone.

Vernon - can be LE in dime sets, can be a stand-up ILB in dime sets at either LE or RE
Kennard - not their 4-2-5 nickel linebacker, but shows up as ILB in "dime" sets, primarily a rusher in situational sets, sometimes stand-up and sometimes hand-in-dirt RE
Robinson - MLB on passing downs
Wynn - DT, sometimes in coverage
Odighizuwa - can be LE in dime sets, can be nose in dime sets
Okwara - stand-up ILB in dime sets
Pierre-Paul - can be nose in dime sets [guys move around a LOT], can be stand-up LE in dime sets

Strange potential mix of Man and Zone with outside CBs seemingly tending to be in Man; Okwara is often a stand-up, third DE, but sometimes it can be Vernon.

Based on the design of the 3-3-5 and 3-2-6 sets in Madden 08 it appears that Spagnuolo would actually use something that is almost "opposite" from a Tampa 2, if that makes any sense whatsoever; based on my analysis in the link I would say that perhaps his scheme is best thought of as a strict Cover 2? It appears that many Tampa 2 concepts have been tweaked in Spags' scheme, possibly with more of a run defense philosophy and emphasis on Fire Zone principles. I'd say the best fit is still his own 2008 Spagnuolo NYG book:
NYG (a Steve Spagnuolo book)
4-3 Normal/Over/Under (no Solid); 4-2-5 Normal/Strong, 3-3-5; 4-1-6 Normal/Flat, no 3-2-6
4-1-6 [Fire] Zone Blitz and Quarter Zone Blitz

* LA

Big 3-2-6 dime, an instance of Big 3-3-5; some Tampa 2 behavior out of their Big 3-2-6 with Ogletree dropping into deep middle. The same linebackers are used in Williams' nickel/dime setups, unlike Spags.

Barron - ILB in both 4-2-5 nickel and 3-2-6 dime; covers backs as wideouts in their 3-2-6 dime
Easley - DT, nose in dime sets
Thomas - DT, sometimes in coverage
Littleton - LOLB in some 3-3-5 sets, but isn't generally the base LOLB (Forrest)

This definitely has more characteristics of a Tampa 2 to me:
IND (a Tampa 2 book)
4-3 Normal/Over/Under (no Solid); 4-2-5 Normal (no Strong), 3-3-5; 4-1-6 Normal/Flat, 3-2-6; no 3 Deep
4-1-6 [Fire] Zone Blitz and Quarter Zone Blitz

EDIT:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2016/10/04/one-reason-the-l-a-rams-are-3-1-they-have-the-best-player-in-the-nfl/ wrote:Jeff Fisher and defensive coordinator Greg Williams altered their game plans after their Week 1 beatdown. Over the last three games, the Rams have dialed the Tampa-2 on 37.4 percent of their coverage snaps (outside of goal line situations) – the highest rate in the NFL and easily the Rams’ most employed scheme. It would be one thing if the Rams were a middle-of-the-road defense, but the results with it are eye opening. In those three games opposing quarterbacks have attempted 51 passes against the Rams Cover-2 resulting in only 31 completions, 266 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions to show for it. That’s a quarterback rating of 58.1

* TB

3-3-5 with N Spence in at LE on passing downs, but no 3-2-6.

Smith - frequently (exclusively?) seen covering Tight Ends, or rushing, on passing downs
McCoy - nose in 3-2-6 dime; sometimes in coverage

This book is tougher, but I would say definitely less Tampa 2 behavior than NO or LA, but I can't be sure if it's more "run defense" and/or "Fire Zone" yet; better options at the moment appear to be MIN/STL or ATL, a Mike Smith 2008 book:
ATL [same as NYG] (a Mike Smith book)
4-3 Normal/Over/Under (no Solid); 4-2-5 Normal/Strong, 3-3-5; 4-1-6 Normal/Flat, no 3-2-6
4-1-6 [Fire] Zone Blitz and Quarter Zone Blitz

* NO

3-3-5 (with De'Vante Harris) with an MLB (Laurinaitis), WLB (Robertson), and SLB/blitzing ILB (Mauti); Big 3-2-6 dime with MLB/WLB (Laurinaitis/Robertson), same as their nickel linebackers; this is different from the behavior of Spagnuolo's defense.

Edebali - sometimes a stand-up rusher
Onyemata, Tapp - DEs in some 3-3-5/3-2-6 sets
Fairley - nose in dime sets
Laurinaitis - Tampa 2 MLB behavior, drops into middle third zone occasionally

This also appears to be a Tampa 2:
IND (a Tampa 2 book)
4-3 Normal/Over/Under (no Solid); 4-2-5 Normal (no Strong), 3-3-5; 4-1-6 Normal/Flat, 3-2-6; no 3 Deep
4-1-6 [Fire] Zone Blitz and Quarter Zone Blitz

* DAL

Same nickel linebackers and dime linebackers (Lee/Hitchens), which would indicate the same kind of behavior as NO/LA and not NYG.

Alright, got an updated list up. Various position updates, plus a few examples of playbooks and subs that needed more info to describe:

Bruce Arians
Def. 3-4 (a Big 3-3-5 Over hybrid with Big 1-5-5, Big 3-3-5 and Big 2-4-5 Prowl nickel sets and Big 1-4-6 Prowl, Big 2-3-6 and Big 1-4-6 dime sets)

Gus Bradley

* 4-3 Under hybrid scheme
$ Formation subs may be used to switch DT1 (nose) with DT or DE in 3-3-5, 3-2-6 or quarter sets
¥ Formation subs may be used to switch DT1 with LE in 4-1-6 dime sets

Pete Carroll
SEA*: Michael Bennett, Cassius Marsh - RDE; Cliff Avril, Frank Clark - LDE; KJ Wright - ROLB; Michael Morgan - LOLB; Ahtyba Rubin - DT1 (1-technique); Tony McDaniel - DT2 (3-technique); Michael Bennett (DE)$£; Frank Clark (DE)¥

Def. Strategy Pass ≤50% (more 2DT sets; 4-1-6 or 2-3-6 dime preferred)

Upped the Run defense here because I want the Dolphins to use a Safety in the box more, almost as often as SEA/ATL/JAX, which I have using the same playbook with eight-man-box base sets (CIN) and at 50%+ run defense.
MIA: Cameron Wake - RDE; Mario Williams - LDE; Jelani Jenkins - ROLB; Koa Misi - LOLB; Ndamukong Suh - DT1 (3-technique); Earl Mitchell, Jordan Phillips$ - DT2 (1-technique)

**** Stand-up rusher/ILB in Madden's 1-5-5 nickel
δ Formation Subs may be used to switch LE with LOLB in 4-2-5 nickel sets
Σ Formation Subs may be used to switch LE with LOLB in 4-1-6 and 3-2-6 dime sets
Ω Formation Subs may be used to switch LE with LOLB in quarter sets
$ Formation subs may be used to switch DT1 (nose) with DT or DE in 3-3-5, 3-2-6 or quarter sets
£ Formation subs may be used to switch DT2 with RE in 4-1-6 dime sets

(£¥) - Four-DE or "NASCAR" Pass-Rush package

I bet no one subs more often than Atlanta currently, so this doesn't surprise me.

Hey, while I'm at it, here's a possible Offensive book that I thought looked like a right fit for the Pat Shurmur (Minnesota) offense:

Mike Zimmer (Pat Shurmur)
Off. TEN (a 3TE set; a 5WR set; some Trips/Bunch sets; End Around; Reverse)

Zimmer was using:

Off. JAX (a Jack Del Rio book; [a 5WR set, ]multiple 3TE sets; multiple split-back sets; QB run)

They both have exactly one Empty set and some 3TE sets, but TEN has more Trips/End Around/gadget stuff! Presumably this would've come from a Jeff Fisher (Titans) offense, right? If such a thing exists, Sam Bradford is more familiar with that type of offensive system.

You do realize just about every playbook is going to throw in stuff that each team doesn't necessarily use, right? This is a closest-match type of deal here. Some things the book does include is a unique "Stack" set that I'm pretty sure Tomlin would use, multiple Empties (of which there is not a great selection of M08 playbooks for), multiple types of Screen plays including WR/TE/HB, and probably a few gadget plays here and there.

Of course, you're always welcome to actually offer advice to people if you feel there is a better book, instead of just trying to make it seem like I haven't already considered as many options as possible, or that you know more about the playbooks than I do.

So I'm sure many people have noticed these Pass Defense sets being used more and more by the Broncos:

It's very LeBeau-esque of Phillips, and I would say there really are a lot of similarities between the two defensive philosophies, so I don't think it's out of character for Phillips to have these kind of "Prowl" sets.

It looked like Shaq Barrett was usually in there, Ware/Miller, Marshall, and Crick or Wolfe were occasionally the stand-up DL and sometimes a lone down lineman, but this did appear to be a 1-4-6 dime essentially modified from their 2-3-6, with those four linebackers and TJ Ward in the box (Simmons/Stewart deep).

What I think is that they need to have these sets. The logical option is the "NE" book, which is also what I would describe as being a LeBeau defense, a 3-4 Under with "Amoeba-like" qualities. I wouldn't go with the "3-4" book because that book emphasizes the 3-4 Over. "NE" is also what a 3-4 Under defense like Ryan's current 3-4 or the Redskins' 3-4 Under could be suited for (although Ryan's book could be very unique and isn't very well described in Madden.)

Gary Kubiak
Def. NE (they'll now use a 3-3-5, Big 2-3-6 ideally with Ward as a linebacker and Big 1-4-6 Prowl dime ideally with Ward and Barrett in there as ILBs)

Moonbax,

A quick note to compliment this effort.

This thread and the several others you began concerning roster management and sliders are amazing. The depth of football knowledge that you are bringing to modernizing Madden 2008 is outstanding. I especially like the flexible judgments that you make in using the existing playbooks and depth charts; this seems a smart practical approach.

Thank you.
