After doing some research I was able to get the 1950's defense. New York Giants Steve Owen invented a 6-1-4 defense that could drop back two defensive lineman for pass protection. While Owen's created it, Tom Landry explained it. Although this was a precursor to the traditional 4-3-4 defense, it would take another 6 years for it to evolve.
There was also another way the 4-3 was invented. The 5-2 defense was very popular during the 1950's, but it lacked a MLB which meant passing through the middle was easy. So teams started moving the DT back into the MLB position creating the an early version of the 4-3 defense.
I'm still having problems with finding the offensive formations. I know that the FB was used as a RB, and I do know of some formations. The Singleback, I-form, and Wing fomations already existed. That's as far as a got.

The wing formations were one of the earliest used but when football stated it used the rugby style. It really looked like the shotgun, You had 3 guys lined straight across the backfield. The center could snap it to any of the 3, who would the start running the ball. Players could still get up and run even if they were tackled.

Is this the 6-1-4 or 5-2-4 formations or both?
