A very interesting option for CPU Teams

Postby jose21crisis » Sat Jan 19, 2019 2:56 pm

I'm still working on my Franchise Journal (I took a trip to slider hell, I'm back though) and I decided, for this season, to use one of MaddenAMP's features, which is to auto reorder every CPU depth chart. There are 2 options, and I decided to look at both. After using both, and seeing the resulting depth charts, I have to say that I'm impressed at the results. As in:
On offense
  • When the team has 3 QBs, but 2 of them are veterans prone to retire in a season or 2 and the other is the recently drafted franchise QB (Or what the team think is the franchise QB), the younger guy gets the start even when his OVR is lower. Good for progression.
  • Teams with receiving tight ends or backs will deploy them in 5WR sets. (Saw this a while ago when the Chargers threw as much Antonio Gates at me as they could).
  • When a certain Offensive Line position ... let's say Left Tackle ... only has decent to low OVR players, and there is a far superior player on another position, say Right Tackle, the superior player will move to Left Tackle, then other players will take over the left position.
On defense
  • On some teams, the team's best interior lineman will move to DT. This lets him see more snaps and possibly make a bigger impact. Specially important on 2-4-5 Nickel sets, since this deploys DT#1 and DT#2 instead of LE#1 and RE#1.
  • If the team has a great coverage safety, that safety could be the team's Nickel corner or Dime corner, effectively creating Big Nickel and Big Dime sets with 3 safeties. It doesn't generate the Cardinals style Big, Big, Big Nickel with 5 safeties, but it's progress to realism. Also, this only seems to happen when the safety depth is good enough (There is a solid starter right behind the safety/subpackage corner)

There are some oddities with this feature, like ...
  • If the team's Fullback is not great, the most talented Tight End could move to FB. I had to manually fix this on my franchise.
  • Some teams will with 2 (On 3-4)/3 (On 4-3) DTs in their starting lineup. Basically the opposite of the Giants' NASCAR package (3 pass rushing DEs or even 4).
  • Some positions are prioritized. For example, at times teams put their best LB at LOLB, the linebacker that is the least time on the field, instead of at MLB or ROLB.
... but it is an interesting feature to look at. I might talk with StingRay68 about this feature, and if it is possible to improve it a bit (Probably not, but I can try)

All right, got some more information related to this. Not the "Reorder Depth Chart" option, mind you, but another option. So, I've been using this Weekly Maintenance Feature for some time now and I think it might be time to post the results. I decided to do a sim-only franchise where I tried to improve the Steelers (And succeeded, despite the surfacing of other AFC Teams. Let me tell you, the Browns will be quite scary), and where I decided to put the Weekly Maintenance to the test to see how good the results could be. I got a couple of years worth of stats here, so I'll be posting those. Specifically, I'll be posting some important categories, like 4000+ yards passers, 20+ TDs passers, 15+ INTs passers and so on for other categories.

Note 1: The distinction "Running Backs" is important here. There are some QBs that made their way to 1000+ rushing yards. And they would have even without MaddenAMP's adjustments, because I tested that.
Note 2: Originally, the label was "RBs with 370+ Carries". The reason is that, according to studies, giving a RB 370 carries or more in a single season will result in that back getting a lower production next season. There are plenty of examples of that. Now, no RB in this count made it to 370 carries, so I lowered it to 350.
Note 3: One player had more rushing yards than Conner did. It was Lamar Jackson, a QB, with 1902 rushing yards.
Note 4: This one was interesting and it is one of the flaws of MaddenAMP's Weekly Maintenance. You see, right above Barkley is another RB, a Madden Generated Back by the name of Brandon Jack, who got 3741 rushing yards in 171 carries. At times MaddenAMP spazes out and gives yards to the wrong player. This tends to happen when it distributes rushing yards among running backs, and it's my theory about what happened here. Jack is a Cowboy and they still have Zeke Elliot, who carried the ball 189 times for -4314 yards. Effectively, I'd say AMP at some point distributed the yards wrong, then the problem escalated. This is one of the very few times it happened (It could happen on something minor, like 3rd/4th down coversions where the conversion percentage is 25500% or similar, and the succesful conversions are 255), and to me is pretty minor.
Note 5: The "4500+ yards passers" category was created solely because Baker Mayfield did it.

Those are the stats I got so far, and I think they look pretty realistic. Maybe a bit too many 1000+ yard receivers and maybe a bit too few 4000+ yards passers. My fault. I used another one of AMP's Weekly Maintenance features. One that lets you adjust the Run/Pass Offensive and Defensive Ratio for all coaches, and adjust it so that it minds the players the team has. So, a team that has a great RB and run blocking line, but just a decent passer will turn to the run, a team with a great passer and receivers will turn to the pass and a team with all great postions in offense will be more balanced, if a bit slanted to a side. Anyway, other than the earlier mentione issues, I'd say it looks alright. Comment about what you think of that.

Thanks for the post, jose. I haven't bothered to mess with the Weekly Maintenance feature, but now that I've seen your work on it, perhaps there is merit in trying it out for one of my franchises. Has Stingray written up anything about this feature or is there any other documentation here on it?

It is apparently an old feature and I couldn't find any help files on it other than AMP's source code (Which took a while to read). I don't think there's any real documentation on it to be honest. Most of what I got was testing it in franchises.
