Big Hits stat

While watching the game logs of the CPU vs. CPU games I was running, I ran into the Big Hits stat. As I understand it, Big Hits happens when the defender triggers Hit Stick tackle animation, which basically means the defender blows up the ball carrier and at times causes more injuries, forces fumbles and causes incomplete passes when the receiver is hit hard. This mostly happens with defenders with high (90+) Tackling, specially Linebackers with the Heavy Hitter weapon or Safeties with the Big Hitter weapon.

Back to the point, when looking at the logs of the Player vs. CPU, the opponent's defenders had a decent amount of Big Hits, 3 of which forced fumbles. However, when looking at guys, none of them had Big Hits. And when looking at the CPU vs. CPU games, none of the defenders had any Big Hit.

I know there is a script for the CPU using Hit Stick tackles all the time, but the problem with using that script is that Hit Stick tackles have a chance to fail if the defender's Tackling stat is lower than the ball carrier's Break Tackle. I know that slider settings might affect that, namely the Facemask penalty slider, but my wonder is why defenders in CPU vs. CPU don't use Hit Stick tackles whereas in Player vs. CPU they do (Then again, it was a Steelers vs. Ravens game, so it could be due to the typical hard hitting football those matchups tend to devolve into).

I have wondered about that stat for years. I though it meant, like, tackles or sacks in 3rd down and 4th down situations. It seems like when I play I really like to use the hit stick on those 3rd down blitzes.

Back to the point, when looking at the logs of the Player vs. CPU, the opponent's defenders had a decent amount of Big Hits, 3 of which forced fumbles. However, when looking at guys, none of them had Big Hits. And when looking at the CPU vs. CPU games, none of the defenders had any Big Hit.

Yup, from looking at hundreds of box scores from Player VS CPU games, your players will very, very rarely use the hit stick, resulting in basically no Big Hits. Using Calhoupe's Scripts to increase the usage of Hit Stick can help.

Yeah, that's kind of what I want to avoid. The thing with using the script is that the CPU will ALWAYS go for the big hit. This can result in 2 things. If the Tackling slider and the defenders Tackling rating is low enough (Some slider sets use the Tackling slider at 29 for instance), there can be LOTS of broken tackles, specially when the tiny Free Safety tries to bring the wood to that huge, Jerome Bettis-like running back, and just bounces back. It could result in a Beast Quake-like run if enough tacklers miss. On the other end, when the Tackling slider (I run it at 50) and ratings are high enough, there are fumbles, dropped passes and injuries galore. Also, the fact that since defenders default to the Hit Stick Tackles, I've seen them at times catchup from behind to the ball carrier then try the Hit Stick and completely miss. This even happens without the script, as I saw during one f my games, Richard Sherman tried to Hit Stick Tackle Le'Veon Bell right after catching up, but he whiffed the tackle and Bell was gone.

I'll, however, give the script a try on some CPU vs. CPU games and see how it goes.

Just had a random thought pop up about this. Since it's introduction, the Hit Stick has always been known as a way to force turnovers (aside from the fact that it also cause injuries). Maybe EA programmed the CPU to use the Hit Stick as one of the ways to balance the game. And is actually one of the legit ways it balances All-Pro (For non-legit ways, see All Madden. 60 AWR corners sticking to receivers after multiple cuts. Linebackers catching up to 100 Speed Devin Hester.This list goes on). Then comes the problem, EA probably didn't program the AI to use the Hit stick when the opponent is the CPU. So, in Player vs. CPU, your guys don't Hit Stick people because they are facing a CPU opponent, and in CPU vs. CPU, no one uses the Hit Stick because both teams are facing CPU opponents. Maybe EA programmed the AI to use the Hit Stick only against the Player!

Ignore my last post. Found something interesting while watching a CPU vs. CPU game.

I've played this game for a while now. I can tell, without a doubt, that the hit we are seeing right here is a Hit Stick tackle. When a dude just propel forward like that and blows up a guy so hard that forces a fumble, that is a Hit Stick tackle animation. So, I'm pretty sure that should record as ... you know ... Big Hit, right?

Except that it doesn't. Danny Trevathan (Who happens to have the Heavy Hitter weapon, explaining not just the Hit Stick, but also the forced fumble) has 0 Big Hits at his name. Despite the fact that you just saw an image ago that he almost killed a guy, he doesn't have the Big Hit he just did.

So, what I guess is that CPU vs. CPU games are glitched, and Big Hits aren't recorded in those games. They are recorded in Player vs. CPU. They are recorded in Coach vs. CPU. But not in CPU vs. CPU. They still happen, but the game doesn't keep track of them.

Very smart EA.

Yeah, it's weird. Sometimes you can even hit stick a guy, absolutely cream him, but it didn't say "Hit Stick" in the corner and you don't get credited for it. Perhaps the AI never gets credited for it in a live game, for whatever reason related to the fact they don't have a right analog stick...
