Low Coach Ratings can make the AI dumb

Postby jose21crisis » Sat Feb 17, 2018 9:51 pm

Something I started to wonder was if Coach ratings affected gameplay. After getting to work and reading a bit, it becomes apparent that it does affect gameplay. Something I recently noticed with Roger's rosters is that, a lot of times, kicks and punts are kicked sideways, as if you were kicking and got a 0 in accuracy. This is interesting, because in vanilla Madden NFL 08 you don't see a lot of sideway kicks, you see straight kicks that, while they sail out of bounds, they usually travel about 30-40 yards before going out of bounds in the case of punts, and the extremely rare kickoff out bounds here and there every 10-16 weeks.

I decided to do some research between the actual Coach Ratings as they are now in Roger's rosters/franchise, and vanilla Madden NFL 08. For this test, I will check the ratings of the Patriots (Stephen Gostkowski missed 2 kicks on our last game), Packers (As a control), Browns (Kickoffs out of bounds and a missed 40 Yarder) and Steelers (As a control) coaching staff. I will update this later, as I need to get me a vanilla Madden NFL 08 franchise file. If what I think happens is right, the reason for stupid decisions, bad offensive and defensive capabilities and bad kicks could be solved by altering the Coach Ratings.

Kind of stoked to see your research as it comes in. I do know this makes sense that even the training staff have an affect on the team. If you want realism in your franchise then the whole coach and training staff needs to be considered. If you have only the best coaches and staff, I would think that your team is going to do better from an AI, as well as, progression standpoint.
That would probably be more realistic for your Steeler franchise, but teams like my 49ers or my past Browns had to suffer through organizational shortcomings.
It has seemed like the better the training staff that I have had in the past the fewer injuries and shorter recovery time, so as the franchise progresses I change out to a better staff.

this is true a better training staff makes your players progress faster and stay off injuries/injured reserve...a cheap staff leads to more frequent injuries/lower toughness and longer IR stays....

good coaches make your offense/defense unstoppable...cheap coaches make the games more evenly matched against the CPU.....any coach rated over 90 in their respective side of the ball that side of the ball will do really well on your team...if they are below 85 in ratings...your games will be much more close/competitive with the cpu.....

That is correct. A cheap training staff will result in longer, more frequent injuries. Since in my franchise I went 16-0 AND made a lot of money, I'll be able to get me a good training staff, which will results in less injuries for my team. We didn't have a lot of injuries, but some were to key players (Sean Davis, Strong Safety/Slot Corner hybrid is one of them).

As for the coaches themselves, I think the ratings can lower team effectiveness, in offense, defense and special teams. Although I did have some troubles with some teams, a fair amount of them were simply destroyed by my team, which I don't really like, I want all of my games to be cometitive AND a slider set that produces realistic stats, but I getting closer and closer to believe that only one of them is possible, not both. Anyway, the TLDR is tweaks to coaches could make the game more competitive and realistic.

After a quick read of those 2 stats I got, I can say that Coach Ratings might not affect Kickers and Punters, at least not the number of shanked kicks that happen. The Special Teams Coach in the '17 Patriots is higher rated than the '07 Patriots Special Teams Coach, yet Gostkowski keeps missing FGs and having Kickoffs going out of bounds. There are also plenty of instances I've seen when the AI makes stupid decisions, like Draws on 3rd and 6. This is part of the frustration I have on Madden and will be reviewed in a different post.
