Is field goal length and penalties included in the drive yards?

When you look at the Box Scores after a game, you'll commonly see something like this:

Code: Select all

NE TD
J. Matthews 7 yard pass from T. Brady
Extra Point Good
Drive Info: 10 Plays, 91 Yds, TOP 4:53, 1:18 left in qtr

Now this is very easy to understand. The drive started on the nine yard line (assuming penalties aren't included in the yards?) and the TD play was from seven yards out. But here's what it might look like for a play that ends in a field goal:

Code: Select all

NE FG
S. Gostkowski 51 yards
Drive Info: 10 Plays, 75 Yds, TOP 3:34, 0:57 left in qtr

Now this is a bit trickier. We know that we made a 51 yard field goal, which means we can calculate from where the ball was snapped on the final play by subtracting 17 yards (51-17=34). This means we were 34 yards away from the endzone, but we still had a 75 yard drive according to the Box Score. Assuming the field goal is included in these 75 yards, our drive must have started on the 25 yard line and gone for 41 yards before stalling.

So it does indeed seem like the field goal length is included in the drive yards, but what's the case for penalties? Does a penalty simply remove X yards from the total or would a TD drive from the 75 yard line with a 10 yard penalty count as 85 yards?

Yep, penalties do count for total drive. You staring from your own 40, getting a defensive pass interference that puts you at the opponents 1 yard line (Good luck finding a guy that can throw it so far) and then scoring a TD would result in a 60 yard drive. The drive summary that appears after every drive shows that.
